DOOM

Wasn't it Doom that some journo mouthbreather trashtalked for being too hard and then he put a video online where he repeatedly failed to hit a standing imp from 3 feet away?
Good times.
There was the notorious Polygon video where they had someone play the first 30 minutes and the dude is clearly shit at it. He hardly moves and his aim is awful

I'm surprised it's still up, but the comments and likes are disabled which is hilarious.

As an added bonus the first eternal dlc added many of the "gripes" these retards had with the base game. Don't like the marauder? have two at a time fucker, better yet have one that is totem buffed. Tentacles giving you hard time? here's a humongous giant tentacle.

It causes me physical pain to watch this guy fumble his way through the corridors of Mars.
It's pretty obvious that this guy used a controler and I can't help but imagine that he was looking like this throughout this entire playthrough:

IIRC the guy 'playing' here is the same guy that would go on to make that infamous Cuphead tutorial gameplay.

And proceed to display just as much competence with his Doom Eternal playthrough as he did in Cuphead.

That's Dean Takahashi you're thinking, he works for some other journo site. His shameful display was actually him playing the Doom Eternal preview, in which he attempts to fight the environment and fares poorly.

He somehow managed to one-up the Polygon video.

DOOM (2016) is on Xbox Game Pass now (thanks E3) I cannot remember where I left off; I believe I am on the second level. I want to complete DOOM 2016 before going into DOOM Eternal. I DO recall starting it on Hard to get the true DOOM experience.

I think I was stuck on a maze level.

That was probably the Foundry, which is the third level in the game. It's also the point where the game starts to get really good, not just because it's mostly nonlinear but also because it introduces the Hell Knights, who operate differently from the grunts and imps you've been fighting up to that point.

Foundry and its folllowup Argent Facility are easily the most nonlinear maps in the entirety of NuDoom, and I wish we could have more levels like that. There's plenty of good maps in both 2016 and Eternal, but none of them really recreate that free-roaming feel that substantial portions of classic Doom had.

I causally picked up Doom 2016 on sale some time ago. One of the most satisfying feelings I had in this game was activating the curb stomping glory kill on one of the demons. I appreciate is how satisfying the crunching SFX in this game are.

Holy hell, it's just painful watching this guy miss a shot at point blank.

The RTX upgrade just dropped. Apparently RTX is quite buggy on PC, which is par for the course for a new patch. There's also apparently a Taras Nabad master level included. Having recently completing the Super Gore Nest master level on Nightmare, I expect it to be a wild ride if it's anything even remotely on that level.

I'll be honest, the updates for this game have been kind of weak. They continue to push Battle Mode, which no one gives a shit about beyond a small group of people. The master levels are nice but they feel like they're taking way too long to come out.

Seriously, where is a horde mode? Arcade? Deathmatch? People have been asking for these things since the game came out. Even that whole Invasion thing they were hyping before release seems to have completely disappeared.

Not sure if it's because of the pandemic fucking their shit up or because they were too busy working on the DLCs, but I feel like they could be doing a lot more.

I'm just annoyed that they haven't fixed that map music bug where the ambient music drowns out the gameplay that's been there since launch. Thankfully someone made a mod that removes it outright, but come on it can't be that hard to fix. It's apparently present on the console releases too.

They've confirmed that the lockdowns massively disrupted their development schedule. Much like most other studios, their development quality suffered for it.

I do agree that Battlemode has largely been a failure and smacks of an attempt to reinvent the wheel. Doom 2016 multiplayer didn't fail because it was derivative, it failed because some no name studio developed it. If id has just stuck with traditional Deathmatch for Eternal's in-house multiplayer, they would have had a good shot at cultivating a multiplayer community. Battlemode was a neat idea, but it was a neat idea that ultimately went nowhere interesting.

All that being said, the two single player DLCs probably do put Eternal on par with 2016 in terms of how much single player content it has to offer a year to post-release. If id can at least maintain their modest pace of new single player content, Eternal should be in a good state when it reaches maturity another year or two down the line.

I just think completely dropping 2016's multiplayer was a mistake, seems like an overreaction. If they just tweaked it a little I think it coulda caught on.

Battle Mode would have been fine if it was just another one of the multiplayer modes available, but it's still the *only* one in the game. It seems like they're trying to brute force it into being mega successful and it just isn't happening.

Exactly. It clearly took disproportionate resources to develop, and offers substantially diminished returns for the effort invested. In a vacuum it's perfectly serviceable, but in a world of limited development resources no choice is made in a vacuum. id made a gamble and it unfortunately didn't pay off as well as anyone would have liked.

Finally got a chance to test out the new update. Switched on DLSS and my performance is even smoother than before. However, I switched on RTX and found the DLSS does not compensate for it, not even close. My framerate flatlined from solid 144 to barely maintaining mid 40's at idle. Maybe they'll optimize it a bit further, but for now I'm not fucking with it until or unless I manage to get my hands on a 3080/3090.

New master level is pretty great though.

EDIT: New development update dropped just as I submitted my post. Apparently they're going to focus on Horde mode rather than Invasion mode. Makes sense, the entire community seems to be clamoring for one and it's more single player focused than Invasion mode.

Wow, speak of the devil.

It was pretty obvious something was up with the Invasion mode, so this doesn't exactly surprise me. I'll gladly take a Horde mode instead, although it kind of sucks it sounds like it's just a single player thing instead of co-op.

Apparently a number of stealth nerfs/buffs were already discovered.
  • Spirits blow up quicker when you cook them.
  • Cursed Prowlers make a sound when they spawn and give you a blood punch charge when they curse you.
  • Dark Lord doesn't heal as much, so the fight is less tedious.
  • TAG 1 stage 1 nerfs have been reverted. However, the end of stage encounter on map 2 and boss fight on 3 got nerfed somewhat. As a whole, more stuff was buffed in than nerfed.
  • Classic mode for the Master Level is apparently a lot of fun and worth checking out.

I still don't like them nerfing/buffing without including it in the release notes, but these changes seem like they're generally moving in the right direction.
