Read the restraining order, particularly the declaration by Anthony Solana p.23It’s not clear exactly when UCLA knew he was having serious mental problems, as he was still in contact with students in March 2021. The student who did an AMA on Reddit said his mental state appeared to deteriorate more around “finals week,” which would have been in December 2020 if it was the preceding fall semester. The indictment is unclear on when he stopped actively teaching classes and was then reassigned to the research group (or even whether the “research group” was a seminar course, which could have been a possibility). Regardless, him going to North Carolina is an indicator, in my opinion, that he had been discharged from his duties by early April of 2021.
ETA: Some corrections.

He was placed on leave March 30 2021 after sending those emails to students. The police were involved only after Matthew's mother forwarded the emails he sent her making assorted death threats on April 10.
The Reddit AMA student took his class in the Winter 2021 quarter so January-late March 2021, placing finals week just before that late March 2021 timeframe where he really starts to come undone, emailing porn to students etc. This is mentioned in student comments on BruinWalk: https://archive.md/M3WwG
The AMA also mentioned a Title IX investigation going back to January of that year. An archived tweet from a female student in that same Winter 2021 class places the blame on Title IX officers and the Phil department for inaction: https://archive.md/TJsiV
They were probably busy figuring out whether it's racist to complain about unwanted advances by a black man. Perils of woke intersectionality.
