He was placed on leave March 30 2021 after sending those emails to students. The police were involved only after Matthew's mother forwarded the emails he sent her making assorted death threats on April 10.

The Reddit AMA student took his class in the Winter 2021 quarter so January-late March 2021, placing finals week just before that late March 2021 timeframe where he really starts to come undone, emailing porn to students etc. This is mentioned in student comments on BruinWalk: https://archive.md/M3WwG

Sorry if there is any confusion on my part. The documents and posts to build this timeline are spread out all over the place. Another student in the AMA mentioned they had taken a class with him in Winter 2020, a full year before his suspension, and that he seemed off even then:

Note for those not in academia: visiting professorships, lectureships, and postdocs can last several years. He graduated from Duke in 2019, so he could have been hired by UCLA as early as fall 2019.

My favorite observation is that his tendency to call Africans "Efrikans" seems like a late addition, to the point that he seems to have simply find-and-replaced every incidence of "African" with "efrikan". You can tell because it's cut right out of the original text, leaving all caps rants that go "FUCK THE FUCKING efrikanS THEY DESERVE BLOOD CANCER". Efficient schizoposting, I guess.

I'm sure I'm late but I'm reading his dissertation and I'm struck by how powerful affirmative action is if this guy is a doctor from that. I know philosophy is a joke field and completely unworthy of respect, but he was a grad student at Duke- that's a world class school, ivy league quality.

The typos, the diction, the prose, it's all just so pathetic. It's the sort of crap you cranked out for philosophy 101 that you took as your sleep-through elective in freshman year, just spread into over 150 pages.

The funny thing is that the premise of his dissertation is so self evident that he may as well have argued that the sun rises in the east and that ice cream is tasty- the whole paper is about "proving" that those of different backgrounds (in particular, ethnic/racial) think differently. No fucking shit, Sherlock. It's the sort of garbage that everyone implicitly knows, and even if presented in the most inoffensive way possible would lead the writer to being branded as a nazi klansman if he wasn't a nigger. Even niggers implicitly know this.

I'm guessing he didn't have to defend this paper in front of a review board- how do you argue against an obvious and ironclad premise?

Schizophrenia can manifest itself later in life, and in a field like academia, minor eccentric behavoir can allow the warning signs to be ignored. Combine that with Covid and the entire overall structure of the college going whack because of it, and you’ve got the perfect catalyst for something like this. Tenured professors have a lot of protections (because they can be weird fuckers) and the college did keep this guy from teaching once the crazy started getting complaints. Even if he wasn’t tenured, it takes time for complaints to move through the system.

They have icecream SMOOTH armpits that feel good on ones dick." in the middle of something serious and everyone as a wtf moment and the schizo doesn't realize they just had a Level 6 Schizo Moment (tm).

Also 99% chance of Relapse at some point even if he is compliant to curing his blood cancer.

That's basically his future peak performance, unironically. Schizophrenia is a sad, sad disease and if you yourself might have or know someone who has schizo blood you need to be aware of when it shows up (usually teen or young adulthood in stages.) It's better to intercept early before you go full Blood Cancer. Please heed the words of the crazy nail icon haver and get informed about it. ALSO if you have schizo genetics DO NOT SMOKE WEED EVER!!! Marijuana can trigger the gene for it in cases where it may not have otherwise been triggered. This is especially important for teens to know who have schizo genetics in their family. Avoid it like the plague.
