Yeah, the saddest part of this is that people like Harris is a dime a dozen. They needed help, but no one cares/willing to do anything, or worse yet, unable to help at all. And when it all come crashing down, the ones affected by it are not just the schizos, but also everyone around them

I don't feel one ounce of pity for him. Psychosis like this can be medicated, and it's obvious that both he and people around him noticed his mind breaking down, but no one did anything. His earlier dissertation from 2019 is postmodern bullshit, but it's legible and was clearly written by someone of stable mind.
If you have a mental illness and make no effort to treat it before going off the deep end I have no sympathy for you.

kind of a shame he went wakanda judge dredd. his thesis was pretty cringe with the strawman roleplay bit, but hes obviously not retarded or anything considering he managed to snag a phd from duke and a post doc tenure. i think he even comes notably close to making an interesting point about hate speech in that one video, but then he just dives off the deep end into schizo ramblings. i wonder if hes gonna be considered competent to stand trial or not.

You're ill-informed or retarded if you think random people in any workplace or family know what the fuck to do when someone they know spirals into psychosis. Psychotic disorders like bipolar and schizophrenia are notoriously difficult to treat even for trained clinicians and psychiatrists. Something especially difficult about these disorders is anosignosia - a lack of insight into one's own condition which almost always occurs with mania.
The hypomanic upswing of bipolar is probably super helpful when working on a PhD. Although the dissertation is not the word-salad mess like the manifesto, it has recognizable markings of hypomania. To be honest I wonder if the dissertation committee read the whole thing - at the end there's claims that are uncited, for example. Which is ya know... not a sign of careful scholarship. Quality academic literature will not have that kind of sloppy error. That sloppiness coupled with the stream of consciousness style of the work are huge red flags. For someone who has observed and diagnosed the illness at least. Because of anosignosia, it is very very rare for a person experiencing this to "catch himself" during the upswing.
Because of the acute paranoia/terror, anosignosia, hallucinations, and other barriers it is very fucking difficult for people in this state to choose to take medications. If you are not able to acknowledge that you're sick, someone putting pills in your hand seems like... an infiltrator.
Because of the laws of most states its VERY VERY VERY fucking hard to force someone into treatment. There's a debate somewhere about nutcase's human rights and the propensity of shitty husbands to try and probate their wives for trying to divorce them vs the real need for a doctor to say "you know that this person is fucking insane rn lets tie em up and shoot them full of thorazine asap." The only case where this will happen is if the person is a threat to himself or others. Proving that a real threat is present is a whole thing.
It's easy to sperg on about how easy it should be to just take some pills as a NIGGERpill antidote, but the reality for people going through psychotic illness is fucking dire.

Schizophrenia to the degree it is in him would require someone external to get him treated. Many symptoms of schizophrenia in the degree he clearly has make someone unable to reality check themselves. He would not be capable of knowing how outlandish his beleifs are.
One of the big issues though is as you state they need to be medicated and a lot of times they are in capable of making logical choices on that medication. Medication won't stop hallucinations or delusions they do have to put work in but somoene as far gone as he is. The blame is on the fact that no one external did anything when it was clear he was escalating. The mental health services failed him especailly when it was clear his own family knew he was a danger by having to get a restraining order against him when he was released.
From everything posted about his history, his forensic history, psych history and his own manifesto. He probably has schizophrenia that requires the old a-typicals and even that may not work with him. Some schizophrenics have to be committed for life because they dont respond to medication and are always a danger to themselves and others.

It's definitely the classic (and really relevant) "alienated young man" problem, in that way. People like to talk about how it's alienated young white men who gradually develop psychosis and get violent and shit, which is bound to happen bc white guys are a majority here, but the neet/incel problem transcends all of that. Severe mental illness, when somebody is already prone to it, gets activated by a series of events beyond their control, and people will blame 4chan and stuff, but really it's just that crazy people seek out uncensored fringe places online, and the words they take in there enter the psychotic thought loop they already have going. Lots of dudes out here spinning out of control. Gonna be a lot more crazy homeless people in cities as time goes on, I'm sure
