There's several decades worth of good (but also visibly very low tv budget usually) or funny bad content from the show that makes it hard if not to look back. When playing a rigged game, breaking the rules is usually the best option. ESPECIALLY if the people deciding what goes don't follow their own rules consistently.
Bascially what I'm getting at is don't let them make you miserable or abandon the things you love. It's what they want.

We also know he's not a space wizard autistically obsessed with forcing people into playing "games" who could construct a pocket dimension lair of his own making anymore which makes me kinda wonder why the hell they even brought the dude back aside from the namedrop clickbait return of a one time only "rival" character they were going to make a running thing during the 60s but never did.

Counter point: Things may have happened to make him that. Or RTD just resets the character to what people think they remember.

There is however the possibility that RTD is playing a much longer game considering he knows he has at least two doctors worth of set up…

Cause it’s probably the biggist name they have which can also pull of a three part long return story and stick the landing. And RTD has a track record of bringing back the biggist names he can find.

Feels like if he hadn’t got tired of Who originally Toy Maker would have turned up at some point as a big bad. As you say they were meant to be something in the 60s. RTD would absolutely know that and go ‘well if they did not do it…I will’

Counter COUNTER point: They did a similar nonsense thing around Moffat's era with bringing back "The great intelligence" from the 2nd doctor's lost episodes. He got brought back as just some random dude using psychic alien particle afflicted snow he found to make evil snowmen and somehow he fused with it and became like evil snow miser for a bit before being defeated for good. Somehow the reasoning given afterwards was it was an"origin story" but you can't really do that if it's not even the same character conceptually. It's probably either going to be something like that or just completely unaddressed. I DO however think RTD is probably going to come out with some statement like he did with Davros and Wheelchair users but for The Toymaker and the Chinese due to his robes being a traditional old world China style of outfit.
However there's always the third possibility of them pulling from the Big finish stuff I know exists but never looked into that adds weird extra lore stuff to him. Not like as a direct pull but as an explanation for "the reason".

Both RTD and Moffat hinted at the doctor becoming and occasionally straight up name dropped The Valeyard several times but never followed through on that arc so I kinda doubt he'd have done it.

Well of course. RTD was always going to just hint and never get to it. Would have taken far too long. Moffat would never do it because it would not be his own original idea on who The Doctor is.

I think he's just getting old? Granted I haven't seen his other performances since DW. The lecture from the other two at the end of the episode really hammered in how both he and his character are old news, his role this episode required him to dial back the energy a little bit since he isn't the leading man he was in his 30's but nostalgia bait being told what to do by some 18 year old and "her" mother. As an aside, his English accent was all over the place last night, back in 2010 it was perfect, in the 50th I could hear he was a bit rustier, but yesterday's episode had him dropping into RP at odd moments.

They wanted her to be the ignorant boomer but I think they made her look even more sympathetic. She used to ignore Donna and undermine her constantly, now she values her family above all else, keeps a much better eye on them, and she was straight up berating herself in the kitchen scene over small mistakes (real tranny kids would never be so grateful because nothing is ever good enough). Ironically that scene makes Donna look worse because it flat out shows she has to teach and tell herself constantly that she has a "beautiful daughter" rather than simply believe it.

imo the Star Beast was okay - at best. I was really suckered in by Murray Gold's music and the old 10/Donna dynamic (mission accomplished) but felt like it didn't have time to breathe in only one episode. RTD's retcon of the metacrisis and the 'let it go' message was confusing and not needed, that's not even getting into the tranny magic explanation. No, Donna, the Doctor couldn't let it go before this point because he didn't know about your Mary Sue daughter and was trying not to get you fucking killed again, so don't sigh and womansplain. The Meep story was too light hearted for my taste and too obvious of an excuse plot for any of this to feel natural.

And right now he's repetitively and mindlessly insulting the very fans they allegedly want back with Pat Tomlinson-tier bullshit. Surprised he hasn't told them to enjoy prison yet.

He won't flog himself probably, just anything he didn't make. He didn't flog himself over the many disabled antagonists he introduced to Dr. Who, solely treated Davros as if he was dirty laundry. Didn't even address the fact it was HIS RUN that brought back Davros.
 
Seems to be doing OK, ratings-wise. Will have to wait for the full figures.

Toymaker has always been an Omega level threat; a reaity warping manchild God that treats human beings as playthings to pervert, corrupt, and enslave for his own selfish games. While the only broadcast TV show story was set in a pocket dimension, later stories including an unmade one that would have aired in Colin Baker's second full season, would have had the Celestial Toymaker operating on Earth out of an amusement park.

As for why they are using him, he's a very popular mega villain who's return got canceled due to Michael Grade being a cunt combined with the fact that one of the earliest known published Doctor Who episode guide books (written by someone who saw the original episodes as they aired) went gaga over it and hyped it up as a lost classic on par with Tombs of the Cybermen.

Also, RTD for all of his sins, is more willing to dip into the show's past than Moffat or Chinball ever were. Though there are several characters (Roman, Rani, and Black Guardian) RTD seems dead set on banning from usage in Nu-Who, even though ironically Black Guardian would have worked just as well as Celestial Toymaker since he's also a reality warping godlike being that has a far more documented hate boner for the Doctor.

Even if he wasn’t doing that…his, David’s and Tate’s return have to be as big fan pleasing as they can be without pulling out Daleks or The Master straight away.

Toy Maker is so very much fan wank
