The doctor doesn't have godlike powers though, he's literally just a space-human type alien with a time machine he fucking stole with his grandaughter.
If the ability to travel anywhere in time and space isn't godlike, I don't know what is. Then add the ability to resurrect oneself at the point of death, understand any language, forge any document (without even knowing what you're trying to forge), occasional telepathy and mindwiping, and a magic wand with an increasingly absurd number of functions, and you're approaching levels of godlikeness that would inspire disbelief in most primitive tribes because he's too powerful.

Edit: Oh, yeah, he created the universe. Big Bang 2.0. Dixitque Deus, Geronimo.

Sure, maybe some fans got into it for the doctor being attractive or whatever but like the shows been generally popular in the states since like the 70s-80s I think?
It had a very small cult following back then. It was for people who thought Star Trek was too mainstream.

The upcoming New Year’s Day special features the Daleks for the third year in a row.

I believe I heard somewhere that they have to do a Dalek episode ever so often or they become entangled in a messy rights situation.

I really liked "Midnight." It's almost more of a classic Twilight Zone episode than a Who episode, though. I know it's a basic bitch choice, but it's really tight, well put together, and genuinely creepy.
Yep, it's essentially "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street". My favorite episode of the new era.

I've heard the beebs claim this rumor isn't true... And yet, they keep pulling this shit every single series.

Also, I don't particularly like Midnight. It frustrated the fuck out of me how stupid everybody in it was. Even if that's realistic (and it is) it was still frustrating. Maybe if this thread ever becomes active again, I'll give a full review of it.

Quick question from a 4/10 bong, why is this show so popular stateside? I understand why shit like The Hobbit is successful because it's a mythical stereotype of what you perceive Europe historically to be, but the love Dr Who gets just baffles me.
David Tennant bought fangirls to the party because he was attractive and they could self insert as the companion and 'bate to the Doctor. The writing of that time period made Who very accessible as well. The only time the show was really popular with normal people in America. That segment of the fandom went away after Matt Smith.

Around the 50th the show was at its peak in America. It's dead now. With how bad Chinballz trashed it even us old skool fans from the classic series don't watch anymore. For me the show ended with Capaldi and I can't think of a better actor to end it on.. Most talented actor to play the Doctor.

I liked Midnight. I always assumed everyone's behavior was supposed to be ambiguous, since it's never clear how much of it is cabin fever, how much is entirely justified paranoia, and how much is the influence of the creature itself. Also, Midnight, Turn Left, and the entire Eccleston run really proved how Davies can really deliver, as long as he has to work within constraints.

I have nothing against anybody who liked Midnight. I just personally thought that everybody in it who wasn't a main character acted like they were fucking stupid (like how they all immediately turned on 10, even though that one chick who got early possessed was *clearly* doing something weird to him, but nah they all turned on 10 immediately, because she started copying 10, and then somehow forced him to start copying her.) The premise was stupid as hell, and the execution was no better.

Having just finished Capaldi's run, I can't say enough about what a strong actor the man is. I hope he gets a lot more work on this side of the pond. Too bad he will probably never do Big Finish. But with how Big Finish is these days I understand. I wish the man the best of luck and thank him for his service.

Why wouldn’t he?
His take on the Doctor sounded so promising, I really wanted to like his run. For some reason I started watching DW again at Season 9 so the stuff about Clara was lost on me and all I remember feeling is apathy and dislike about the mystery box plot about the Hybrid and the episodes Heaven Sent and Hellbent. And family members commenting around me that the show didn’t feel fun anymore. It wasn’t anything about him specifically or his role (his performance in Torchwood was amazing) but I seriously couldn’t tell you a thing about Season 9 if asked. I gave it a serious try then dropped the show once more.

this is basically what i've been saying for years. Capaldi was great and Capaldi's doctor was great the stories surrounding him were just awful.

Capaldi's Doctor was great in his first season. He completely channeled Tom in that god-tier mummy episode and feeding a guy who was already going to die a tracker so they could follow his corpse into a Dalek's stomach was straight up something Sixie would have done and a complete 180 on the wishy washy Disney Who trash that most of NuWho indulged in. And then the next season introduces him playing an electric guitar while wearing sunnies and riding a tank and I noped the fuck out of there and never looked back. Nowadays I don't even give NuWho, even the good stuff, a second thought. To me Doctor Who ended with Seven walking away with Ace and muttering something about tea.

My favorite of all time is the Human Nature two-parter. I’m a sucker for stories that deal with the idea of personal identity in that way.

I’m not even sure if I’d watch 13’s run in a “so bad it’s funny” way, like those terrible Netflix adaptations, no one I know even likes Doctor Who or would be willing to watch it with me long after those episodes aired so I’d just be playing catch up alone watching mediocre television. It’s sad how irrelevant it’s become.
He shoots and scripts the show like it's a procedural drama and it's dreadfully dull as a result.
Whenever I check what’s going on with this show every now and then it looks so boring, everything is blue shifted and everyone is dramatically preparing for another ‘shocking’ revelation about the Doctor with a cast of companions who look like they got lost off the set of a cancelled BBC Three show.

12 rounds out to a warm professor type with a dry wit in S10, so S9 is basically his mid-regeneration crisis. Losing Clara really sobered him up and it's the best version of Capaldi's Doctor imo.

Whoever thought THIS GUY...

...would create dull, repetitive, unexciting TV?

It's a shock I tell you. Shock!

Could they not even once have put Whittaker in fucking dress?
Is that seriously your biggest gripe with modern day Who? (Ok. in fairness, I believe I know you well enough to say that it isn't...) But I mean, come on. I honestly don't care whether or not the fem Doctor wears a dress... I would *greatly* prefer that the writing wasn't shit.

But I guess neither of is getting what we want any time soon.

If I had a T.A.R.D.I.S., I would use it to go back in time and beat the shit out of this fucking nerd. Maybe then he'd grow up to be at least a little bit less of a faggot. And hopefully not ruin Doctor Who as much as he has in this current timeline.

Probably would have triggered the Tumblrinas who used to throw shit fits over Amy and Clara daring to look attractive and wear sexy outfits that the actresses themselves chose to wear for their characters despite what the Moffat haters tell you. The mere thought of 13 in a dress, no matter how non sexual and covered up it is, would probably cause some sort out outcry.

Hasn't the show been getting less and less popular in the States ever since Series 7? I'm pretty sure that both Tennant and Smith endeared much of the American audience initially with their twee, quirky, British charm, but it's been all downhill since then.

Eh... as a burger, I actually liked Capaldi a *lot* at first. His character as first introduced was a nice change. He almost seemed like a callback to Sixie in the beginning- And yeah, Sixie is still my favorite Doctor.

It was the shit writing, and later the identity politics Which reminds me, did you know that Bill was a lesbian? I know the show, and in turn Moffat's writing, was super subtle about it... but she was actually a lesbian. I know, mind blown right? that made me stop giving a shit about the show.

I actually gave Jodie's first series a chance, but it was so bad that I had to bow out. I haven't seen a full episode since the Series 12 premiere.
