Hasn't the show been getting less and less popular in the States ever since Series 7? I'm pretty sure that both Tennant and Smith endeared much of the American audience initially with their twee, quirky, British charm, but it's been all downhill since then.

The show is dead over here.

Yeah, I'm a little up north myself, but really, I don't think the show had much traction past Matt Smith. Or at least, that's what I see from local Whovians. They're all about Smith, with some into Tennant.

I actually fell in love with it with the Eccleston era, and dropped it mid-Capaldi era (Looking at you, moon episode.)
That's been my experience too. Back during the 50th Doctor Who was all over the place. Had merchandise in stores. Had movie showings. DVDs were released in a timely fasion in relation to their British release. I had normies at work who watched it. Now nothing.

I am a fan from way back. Used to watch Tom Baker on PBS with my grandfather. Collected the Target novelizations of the lost episodes. I remember being overjoyed to find the novelizations of Tomb of the Cybermen and The Tenth Planet. I still enjoy the classic series on occasion but have given up on the new series.

Can confirm. Nobody I know watches it anymore. I couldn't find merch in stores if you put a gun to my head. It hasn't vanished as completely as, say, Game of Thrones, but it's such a vestige of what it used to be. (Speaking for myself, I started with Eccleston and watched to the end of Capaldi out of a sense of obligation.)

You get what you fucking deserve.

Used to go to the Forbidden Planet on Shaftesbury every year when I'd go to London for work from about 2012 or so on, and would pick up Dr. Who toys for my kid -- when I first started going, there was a whole goddam wall of Daleks, TARDISes, action figures, you name it. Last time I was there in 2018 there were two battered Daleks and a Tom Baker coffee mug, and that's it. No one gave a fuck anymore. Sad.

The doctor doesn't have godlike powers though, he's literally just a space-human type alien with a time machine he fucking stole with his grandaughter. At leas the fucking WAS before Chibnall recently retconned him to a god-child orphaned black girl responsible for the timelord regeneration being a thing, shitting on both the lore and the universal appeal of the character as just some fucking guy from some other planet. There were hints of him having a greater social status than just "some guy" before going rogue. several points in the series, both og series and new who bring this up once and a while.

Sure, maybe some fans got into it for the doctor being attractive or whatever but like the shows been generally popular in the states since like the 70s-80s I think? I think the reason it was so popular over here for so long is just the amount of wacky scifi ass shit it'd throw out there. Similar reason shit like Star Trek or Lost in Space got so big.
That last bit was my favourite part about the show. You can fit anything into Doctor Who because the premise is "sufficiently advanced teleporting, indestructable, time travelling box", it's designed to jump to a new setting every story arc. Of course the timeline stops making sense after 50 years of episodes tacking events onto the history of Earth but you don't really care until Chibnall rubs your face in it and only sends the TARDIS to political setpieces.

Had no idea we had this thread.
The loss of interest for me started with the Capaldi seasons but culminated with Jodie's season.
I gave her a chance in the beginning but as you preach to me the more I HATE you.
Here are my impressions:
1. Shitty companions. I have no idea of the companions names.
2. Nonsensical plot. Fuck of "Timeless Child".
3. Anti- past doctor sentiment. Not even skin color here. You shat on years and YEARS of great history.
4. Jodie cannot act here. I am convinced she cannot act anywhere as she was forgettable in Boradchurch (I think)
5. She is not her own person- she is spoofing.
6. Monsters sucked. Teeth guy?
Anyway, feels good to get this out since I am mourning the loss of talking to my co-worker/ partner about this show.
End it, give it 10 years then reboot.

Andrew Cartmel was a retarded commie faggot, but at least his "master plan" if it would have even come to pass, (and to be fair, it never really did) didn't completely and totally make every single part of the show that came before him worse in retrospect.
Chinballs has utterly killed this show.

I was never the biggest fan of RTD in the past, I only liked him in the first place because I liked the premise of the show in general and didn't know any better at the time.
RTD isn't going to fix the problems with current day Doctor Who. If anything, I think he's going to double down on all the stupid shit that Chinballs did..

For all those who doubt the monumental intellects in charge of this venerable and once much loved show.... you may now allay all your fears. All will be saved by a collaboration with a game, Eve Online, the makers of which have done almost as good a job of alienating their audience. Bask in the magnificence of the photo realistic promotional material.

And yes, this is real!

Is that seriously your biggest gripe with modern day Who? (Ok. in fairness, I believe I know you well enough to say that it isn't...) But I mean, come on. I honestly don't care whether or not the fem Doctor wears a dress... I would *greatly* prefer that the writing wasn't shit.

But I guess neither of is getting what we want any time soon.
It was a throw away comment, but the recent male actors (especially Capaldi) had great tailors to make them look good: all the outfits were very manly etc. The first female Doctor? She looks like a homeless hippy. I thought it was fucking weird: Doctor Who is now a woman but let's keep dressing her as a man? The James Bond episode was a perfect opportunity for some glam, but they made her look like a 70s lesbian caricature. She could have rocked a few Mary Tamm outfits.

Man, I think you miss the entire point of her run as the Doctor. "Glam" is about as far from their message as you can get. I'm just amazed they didn't put her in an oversized, pale blue jumpsuit like some asexual, dystopian factory worker.
