I always preferred and missed the Doctor as a wandering space hobo. I understand the temptation but I hate him as Space Jesus.

It's the same issue the new live-action Mulan had. In the original, she was just an ordinary peasant girl, who wanted to fight for her country. She couldn't keep up with the men, but that meant she just had to buckle down, and work harder to achieve her goals, because there was nothing inherently special about her. In the new one, she has super high levels of Chi, or some shit like that, so she's just magically better than everyone. The Doctor is so much more inspiring when he's just a guy who stole a time machine and ran away. Making the Doctor the birth of all Time Lord power, or whatever it was Chinballs did, exactly, is so lame. There's a certain level of relatability with him as a space hobo, that if he can be clever, and courageous, and quick-witted, then maybe I can, too. But if he's just amazing by virtue of his birth, then whatever

Chinball is a Cartmel devote and as such, his rape of the lore is based upon the Cartmel hypothesis that the show had "demystified" The Doctor and he needed to be more mysterious and his past left vague.

JNT famously was OK with the Cartmel Masterplan so long as the payoff didn't overturn the applecart. When Cartmel DID try and pay off the hints and clues with the serial (later turned NA novel) Lungbarrow, JNT said "no just no" and it was replaced with Ghost Light. And the backlash against Lungbarrow (which was the last NA novel with McCoy's Doctor) added to it, to the point that people who claimed the NA novel as the "official continuation of the TV show" did so explicitly because of the fact that the NA novel continued the Cartmel Masterplan.... until they got their payoff and recoiled in horror at what Cartmel and his writing crew wanted to do the lore.

Chinball is one of those ascended fanboys who is STILL bitter that his fellow fans rejected Lungbarrow and the Cartmel Masterplan. He probably was secretly screaming inside when RTD explicitly stated the New Adventures Novels weren't canon and that Lungbarrow's revelations about the true nature of the Doctor were not going to be explored or even acknowledged in Nu-Who. Hence why, first chance he got, he made the Masterplan canon though with a different take, so he can finally have his revenge on people who've long since mocked and laughed at those Who fanboys who obsess over the Cartmel Masterplan to this day .

I loved Lungbarrow. It was full of interesting ideas about Gallifrey. I hate what Chibs did with the show. He is full of bad ideas.

What Chibs did is full on social justice wank, nothing to do with the Cartmel Masterplan.

Google tells me nothing about Lungbarrow. What was the plot that so horrified fans?

It retconned all Gallifreyians as being sterile clones and regenerations as a means to sidestep the fact that they can't have kids and limitations on the number of clones that they can make at any given time. Also, Susan is some random adopted orphan that the Doctor convinced to call him "grandfather" and that the Doctor is also "The Other", who was one of the first Gallifreyians and helped create time travel.

Also, adding to the "what the fuck? we waited nearly a decade for THIS?" negative reaction, the book was one of the very last Doctor Who books put out by Virgin Publishing who lost the Doctor Who license as the Eighth Doctor film came out around the same time and as such, had a very small print run compared to earlier books they published. This added to the book's mystique, as in the late 90s and early 00s it went for around $100+ on the secondary market. It eventually went down in value when BBC published the text of the book (along with several other Doctor Who books) on the official BBC Doctor Who website when the series relaunched in the mid-00s.

Timothy Dalton as Rassilon is the only Time Lord related lore I care about.

Five years of 9/10 build-up then like five minutes of Dalton just fucking everyone up like.

Sure, he acted almost completely the opposite of how Rassilon had always been portrayed before that (shitty) episode, and Rassilon even still being alive didn't make any fucking sense (Until the Big Finish's Gallifrey series actually kind of explained it... but that was still a retcon.)

At least they got one of the more forgettable James Bonds to play him for it!

Fuck off with your Boomer pandering bullshit, prime-time SciFi isn't for your geriatric wrinkled arse to sit in judgement over. It was good shit. Everything on the airwaves shouldn't cater to your weird autistic bullshit for the next 20 years until you gracelessly expire in a pit playing "Summer of 69" and "80s HitMix" over-and-over so you can relive your youth.

If we're being honest, an authority figure being the actual bad guy is literally one of the most boomer/hippie things of all time.

The original Rassilon being a fair, but a bit of a trickster figure is far more original and less tropey.

I do love Tim Dalton though. Kind of wish we got to see him as classic Rassilon but watching him bitch slap around the Master was kino.

Yeah, I know - but there's a level of "lore worship" from boomers who want to relive their youth that I cannot forgive.

Well the timeless child definitely sounds like a crappy fan fic version of that.

Whenever they said that Galifrey was created by Rassilon, Omega and "the other" everybody knew they would be tempted to declare the protagonist that 3rd fellow.

Normally I'd be sympathetic but things nowadays are getting so crappy I can understand the nostalgia for when shit had a basic level of competence.

They actually DID have the Seventh Doctor declare himself the Other (in a by the by sort of way). One of the most famous Cartmel Masterplan bits was in the Dalek story involving the Seventh Doctor with the hand of Omega. The Doctor basically admits helping build the device, when he's explaining it's backstory and how the ancient founders of timelord society (IE Rassilon, Omega, and the Other) created it. Ace does a spit take and ask the Doctor to clarify what he just said but he immediately changes the subject and it never gets brought up again by Ace.

(the serial in question later had a bit where the Doctor declares himself "more than just a time lord" during his confrontation with Davros; but the line got cut from the broadcast version).

What the fuck happened to Maisie Williams (Ashildr/Me) she looks more like a goblin every day.

This was actually Rassilon's cousin Jake Rassilon.

She was probably molested by the jew producers on Game of Thrones.

Speaking of nostalgia, there are two geriatric companions showing up in the next special

And I was one of those people who were collecting and reading those Doctor Who novels as they were coming out.

I legit loved Lungbarrow. Looms were an amazingly cool idea at the time. If nothing else, it was weird and original.

It sure beats the shit that's passing for sci-fi these days.
