After watching most of the first season of classic who, man its so slow, especially the prehistoric episodes where literally nothing happens for most of the episodes, I cant imagine having to wait for several weeks for anything of consequence to happen. Also Chesterton being the universes greatest fighter for no reason is really jarring.
I would not recommend starting classic who with the first, or even the second doctors... Both have their charms to be sure (2 in particular is one of my favorites) but tv back then was not designed to be watched as it is today, and many of the episodes can be painfully dull by today's judgement... especially if you're trying to binge them as you would something on Netflix. It might be easier to start with some particular recommended serials from the 3rd 4th and 5th doctors. (A few have already been named here by me and others)
I was rewatching Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang recently, man what a fucking trip. I loved it.
Series 5 As a whole is easily my favorite of new who.

Series 1 is still my favourite, but Series 5 is a close second.

It was all downhill from there though...
I liked series 8 and 9. They're not as consistent as series 5 but they're what I wanted out of Doctor Who in terms of tone, characterisation and production at the time. Also seeing tumblr fangirls BTFO made me laugh.

What may be the show's downfall in the end, is that they used their Smith-era popularity to experiment with the format, then spent the last two years trying to get that audience back after losing them because of "the ugly old man".

What's funny is that I've seen more people call Smith ugly than Capaldi. In fact you'd be surprised at the amount of fans who lust after Capaldi. I've met too many fans who stopped watching after Tennant left. Not because of Moffat or the story lines, but because they didn't think Matt Smith was hot enough to be the Doctor.

Funny enough years ago I did have someone tell me "Matt Smith looks weird" to my surprise. Then another person telling me they were strangely attracted to Capaldi. I chalked it up as a minority opinion back then, but I've always noticed Matt's funny nose.

To be fair, Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, Baker again, McCoy, Eccleston... Most of the doctors haven't been conventionally attractive.

I was watching a reaction video (because I love seeing fangirls cry) and I got myself wondering.

What's your guys thoughts on Dark Water/Death in Heaven?

I think this story sums up a lot of the Capaldi era's divisive moments. Not only a more alien Doctor, but an emphasis on portraying a more toxic dynamic with the companion. I wasn't too impressed while watching it, but I might give it another shot, stuff like the so-called dead bodies saying "Don't Cremate Me" is genuinely chilling.

There's also the freefalling.

I was very excited to see it beforehand... But I remember waiting like a week (after the second episode aired) to see the two parter as a whole, with my girlfriend at the time... (who lived a few hours away) I do remember us both being disappointed though :/

I enjoyed it personally. I'm all for a more alien Doctor and exploring a darker companion dynamic.

I actually like Missy a lot more than John Simm's Master. His version was ok until The End of Time where he becomes a lightning skull cannibal. The free falling thing doesn't bother me much. I don't think it's any worse than when Ten falls out of the sky and crashes through a ceiling.

Speaking of alien I think it's time for non human companions. Or at least humans that aren't from the 21st century. Everyone praises characters like Rose for being "relateable human characters with real lives and families" yet it doesn't always mean they're well written. Less Earth shenanigans and more space adventures. I could care less about family drama.

I agree. Jamie is one of the Doctor's best and someone like Katarina who is so far devoid from the current era (like Leela I guess) could lead to very interesting interactions in a sci-fi majority setting, kinda like how Kat just assumed everything was magic.
I think it stems from laziness really. It's moderately harder to write a character when you have to consider where they came from and stuff when thinking about how they'd act in certain situations. Having a character from modern day [insert writer's country] makes it easier as they can draw from the pool of their life. It's also slightly harder for the audience to relate to a character when they are from a different planet/country/time period with different culture and ideals instead of being like "oh that's just like my life".
Maybe when one of the current characters eventually leaves we'll get someone from a different (non-current day UK) background.

I certainly don't. Rose is quite literally my least favorite companion of all time. Offhand, I can not think of another fictional character I dislike as much as that selfish bitch, and I do not find her to be "relatable" at all.

At least we have based Nardole.
Not any more we don't :(

Well hate to repeat myself but this new series is officially doomed

http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/rumour-series-11-features-educational-episodes-in-us-india-87196.htm

New Doctor Who boss Chris Chibnall is keen to make the show as educational as it is entertaining – just as it set out to be in the 1960s.

With that in mind he has embarked on a mission for the Doctor’s new friends Ryan and Yasmin to be transported back in time to witness historical events that are particularly relevant to their own ethnic backgrounds.

The teens, played by former Hollyoaks stars Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill, have already filmed with Doctor Jodie Whittaker in Cape Town, South Africa which doubled as 1950s America.

In the plot the Time Lord comes face to face with American civil rights activist Rosa Parks, who in 1955 famously refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger, sparking the beginning of the end for segregation.

Thanks to the TARDIS, the time travellers will witness Alabama bus driver James F Blake telling Rosa to give up her seat, and her brave refusal.

Setting aside the fact that for Black Britishers the US civil rights movement has objectively less relevance and importance than West Indies cricket scores, and the fact that assuming that all black people everywhere are deeply invested in the history of niggos in america by virtue of being black seems a tad racist, the very fact that they are going "LETS MULTIPLE EPISODES LECTURING PEOPLE THAT RACISM IS BAAAAD!" in a season they are dedicating to trying to compensate for ratings plummeting for the past few years just confirms for me that we are seeing the show go full Marvel and attempt to pander to screeching tumblrites and the professionally woke/offended media people to try and bring in new viewers, assuming as Marvel and other companies did that they can replace lost fans with every demographic said tumblites/media people claim to represent and speak/think for.

Which given the current ratings crisis may well result in the show being put in danger of cancelation once remaining viewers jump ship and the legions of muh-diversity fans fail to materialise to replace them. Either way im glad my affection for the show dried up 4 years ago, which enables me to sit back and enjoy this near certain franchise death in the making

This was enough to put me off right here. When you're drawing from fucking Hollyoaks for your talent you know you're circling the drain.

I still have loads of Classic Who I haven't seen and I've just pre-ordered the Eighth Doctor's latest boxset from Big Finish so I'm sorted 8)

I mean I'm all for having some pure historical episodes as they were among the First Doctor's best, but this is clearly just virtue signalling and instead of having fun in historical settings will likely just end up being lectures in modern history. I can't wait for anti-Thatcherism to make it's glorious return to the series.
