This just strikes me as desperate. Their movie is going to be shit, just like the last 3 were, and they want to hide behind a popular actor. I'm actually surprised that they didn't spring for Tenant as well.

Also, whoever wrote the byline "From TARDIS to Tatooine," should be fired.
Is Matt Smith really that popular though? Even after he left Doctor Who he pretty much faded away until recently.

Not at all. Truth be told Tenant, or even Capaldi, but especially Tennant, would have been a much better choice all things considered. It makes the desperation even funnier though.
Knowing the current state of Star Wars I wouldn't be surprised if Matt's character will be written solely to be an evil oppressive white male caricature. So there's really nothing to gain or lose here.

Considering Richard E. Grant’s also in the film, expect to see lots of fan theories about how the Eleventh Doctor came to the Star Wars universe to fight the Great Intelligence, although I suppose that depends on what roles they play.

I actually love that Richard E. Grant is the Great Intelligence because I can now reimagine Withnail and I as the result of what would happen if the Great Intelligence was forced to share a flat with the Eighth Doctor.

Matt Smith is a good actor with a bad agent.

Yeah. They let him show his range by starting as goofy and moving towards angry and bitter about his past. I always preferred Eccleston and Tennant, but grew to really like his run as it got darker. But then they chickened out and hit a bullshit reset button.

I hate it.

Yeah, I gotta agree here.

First episodes of a New Doctor are almost always pretty weak (the only one I remember being "okay, I'm the Doctor, lets do this shit" was Jon Pertwee back in the day), as the new actor is getting into the groove, but the quirkiness here seems forced. Also, wasn't a fan of the "amnesia" thing when Capaldi did it, pretty much feel the same here.

Smith's first episode was the one that ultimately made me fall in love with the show. It's still one of my favorite episodes of Nu-Who.

I had vaguely heard of the show waaay back in the day... I have vague memories of seeing random re-run episodes of Baker, I remember seeing the TV Movie and having no idea what was going on, I watched the first series of Nu-Who with moderate interest, but almost stopped watching entirely because of how shit the second series was, I watched series 3 off and on, and came back because I actually *liked* series 4.

No, I'd agree. Other than Pertwee, Smith's introductory episode is arguably the best "first episode" out there (and I would say without a doubt the most original of all of the Doctors' "first episodes"). I'm thinking that since Moffat was taking over at the time, he needed to pull out the big guns and managed to make an excellent one for Smith.

It’s, uh...

It’s phallic.

Overcompensation, probably, circumstances being what they are...

So Big Finish are bringing back Lucie Miller:

https://www.bigfinish.com/news/v/lucie-miller-returns

I'm pleased they didn't go the route of

bringing her back from the dead

but at the same time I think having a collection of four standalone stories between Series 1 and 2 of the Eighth Doctor is sort of inconsequential, especially since the character had such a fantastic exit. I'll probably still buy this, but as far as I can see this doesn't really add anything to Lucie's story other than a few more adventures.

I feel like Big Finish could've done more with this - I still don't think we've had a satisfactory pay-off to the Eighth Doctor's fury at the Daleks at the end of To The Death and I think they could've used this as an opportunity to do just that. But at the same time I think the moment's long past which is a massive shame. Oh well, hope prevails...

Lucie bleedin’ Miller? I’m honestly surprised, Sheridan’s quite a big star now from what I’ve heard.

I didn't hear anyone mention it, but out of boredom, I decided to check out Lady Christina: Volume 1.

I'm not going to go super in depth, as there really isn't much to say. There wasn't anything heinously bad here (like there was in Jenny: the Doctor's Daughter). But there also wasn't anything particularly great either.

As could probably be expected, having a strong female lead (tm), this set was guilty of basically making every single male in it borderline incompetent to compensate.
This was rather humorously lampshaded in the first episode, which incidentally was my favorite of the 4.
Aside from that, there really was no noticable SJW bullshit, aside from a joke about Lady Christina 'identifying as a man' (which honestly seemed to be at the expense of trannys.. probably an oversight on their part.) when caught trying to break into somewhere with a man's id. I chuckled.

Donna's mother Sylvia makes an appearance in the second episode, and I'm happy to report that she's just as insufferable as she's always been. Forgettable episode though. Interestingly, Sylvia tried to give Christina's dad a "don't push your kid away or they might not stop running, just like my Donna" speech... Which really doesn't work, because at this point (and even at the end of this set) we do not know Lady Christina's dad at all. Hell, we *barely* know Lady Christina herself.

Sam Bishop, (whom I'm assuming is a character from the UNIT series that I've never bothered getting into) has an almost guest starring role in this. (More so in the latter 2 episodes). I can't tell if they dumbed him down for this, or if he's always like that, but I'm not interested enough to check it out for myself.

I kind of zoned out during episode 3 because there was a bit too much stupid for me.
An evil museum curator has some sort of under Sea base and trained sharks where she keeps a semi-sentient alien painting.
But needless to say it was my least favorite of the box set.

The Slitheen make an appearance in episode 4, and I guess they're meant to be the big get for the series. (Why?) It wasn't a bad episode, but the stakes weren't particularly high, especially for a finale.

The biggest flaw of this set is that Lady Christina isn't really a likable character. The whole "rich noble chick who steals to piss off daddy" stereotype is in full effect here. They even introduce the asshole dad shes stealing to piss off. They try to have it both ways, claiming that she only steals "from people who can afford it, and then usually gives it back," but then in the next episode she talks about the Saudi prince she fences stolen alien tech to... I don't think it's endearing when she
Steals the watch from the undercover Interpol agent who helped her out, and steals from pretty much every other cop who helps her out throughout.
I kind of think the box set wants us to think it is though...

Edit: I will mention music, because it was surprisingly noticeable this time. On the plus side, I was actually digging the theme song, although I think they randomly changed it up in one of the episodes, which just felt weird in a first box set. BF usually does a good job with theme songs.

On the flip side, the incidental music was noticably bad... It sounded like an amateur made it with a 20 year old cassio half the time.

In general, this set isn't *bad* it just isn't all that good.

5.5/10 mostly because I liked the first episode.

Tennants too smart to know what a sinking ship Star Wars is.

He'd make a good Reed Richards through.
