Pyramids of Mars. Love that story.Hey guys, what's your favorite 4th Doctor/Sarah Jane episode? Asking for a friend.
Brain of Morbius is one of my favourite stories. Masque of Mandragora is also good, but I haven't watched it in years.Hey guys, what's your favorite 4th Doctor/Sarah Jane episode? Asking for a friend.
“My brother and I were raised gender-neutral before it was even considered a thing,” Jodie Whittaker said of her upbringing.
The Hand of Fear was her final story and leads more or less directly into School Reunion (for some reason The Five Doctors seems to have been forgotten by the latter episode), but it's a pretty pedestrian watch. So far the options are Pyramids of Mars, Brain of Morbius, and Masque of Mandragora. Any other suggestions? (I'm only doing one)
I don't necessarily want to see her last episode, just a more or less fun story with her in it, preferably with plenty to talk/laugh about. Not really sure what I'm looking for, but some sort of compare and contrast to Rose perhaps. The Hand of Fear was her final story and leads more or less directly into School Reunion (for some reason The Five Doctors seems to have been forgotten by the latter episode), but it's a pretty pedestrian watch.
......is this fish faced spastic really trying to claim that not being shut in a nunnery from birth to do nothing but learn sandwich making and dick sucking constitutes "being raised gender neutral"?
I just assumed they were called Silurians because they're Sci-fi Welshmen & the Silures were a Welsh tribe. The native inhabitants of theThe Sea Devils - Part Two
So we ended last episode on a cliffhanger. Not quite as much of a cliffhanger as in Dragonfire when the Seventh Doctor ended up hanging from a... cliff (only to casually clamber back up again next episode) but still a cliffhanger with Jo and the Doctor trapped on a sea base with a sea devil lurking in the background. We open this episode with a Jo (who has clothes on, for your information!) yelling "it's coming towards us". And indeed a lumbering, heavy-breathing figure is doing exactly that, but it turns out to be the terrified survivor of last episode's fatal poker night. This poor chap has not merely been confronted with a murderous, heat-ray wielding fish-person; but is then asked to sustain a panicked gasping state of terror throughout the entirety of Jo and the Doctor's exposition dialogue. There's only so many times an actor can grimace and collapse before it becomes strained, but he does his best. Finally the Doctor puts him out of his misery by rustling up a syringe of drugs and giving the guy a shot. I'll be calling him Doctor Feelgood from here on.

It's interesting to see how smoothly the Doctor and his companion get on in this era. Some good-natured sparring on occasion but otherwise a well-oiled machine. Makes quite a contrast to the Rose episodes @UnKillFill is currently reviewing where the two are routinely at odds on some subtle competing level.
Anyway, it turns out those dastardly fishies have hooked the base's radio transmitter - they're not taking any chances with these uppity mammals. So Doctor Feelgood asks if there are any transistor radios on the base, explaining to Joe, in great technical detail, how you can turn a radio reciever into a transmitter. So the show hasn't entirely forgotten its mandate to educate its viewers, yet. The Doctor's quest to listen to Night Ride hits a setback, however, when he and a Sea Devil nearly bump right into each other, causing Doctor Feelgood to call for peaceful dialogue, and the mostly peaceful Sea Devil to try and zap him with a heat-ray. Doctor Feelgood is too spry for the old trout, however and makes it back to Jo, slamming the metal door behind him. A clever idea here when Doctor Feelgood strings some wire from a fusebox to the door and has the Sea Devil electrocute himself trying to get through. Fried Fish is back on the menu boys!
With the Sea Devils temporarily vanquished, we're back over to the naval base for some exposition. It seems to be dawn now which means Doctor Feelgood has been working on turning his transistor radio into a transmitter for about eight hours. Considering Ten managed to cure all known diseases in the Galaxy in around four minutes, Third really needs to step up his game. But we'll put it down to the distraction of Jo in that white and purple pants suit. Who incidentally calls the Doctor's mess of wires "Modern Art". Based Jo laying the smack down on post-modernism, that's what I like to see!
Going to take a second here just to say that practical effects can hold up better than you expect. The Sea Devils themselves may look like something from a carnival parade but the way the metal door is eaten away is pretty cool. I wonder how they did it?
View attachment 1591493
(a crappy looking still of an actually pretty cool effect, watching the metal of the door be eaten away inch by inch).
Also, the writer of this episode Malcolm Hulke clearly got some ear-bending by the nerds of the day because in this the Doctor remarks that the creatures should have been called Eocenes rather than Silurians and that whoever named them that clearly didn't know what they were talking about. Respect to Malcolm Hulke for calling himself out, there! Clearly a man not above striving for self-improvement.

More cars with no doors. I'm convinced they are meant to be futuristic. But what's this? The Master is loose. And in disguise! Some things never change. I confess I got a kick out of seeing the Simm master bring back the tradition in the Cyberman origin story episode. What's he doing? Rifling through the naval base's supply cupboard. Not the most dramatic of plans and even manages to get himself spotted by Jo.
A quick dash back to the prison and he's calmly back in his cell claiming to have been there all along. Unsurprisingly the Doctor doesn't fall for this ruse and the Master tries to assasinate Doctor Feelgood with a GUN! He's quickly disarmed by some Venusian Akido, accompanied by gigantic "AKIDOH" yell. They then pick up some conveniently placed rapiers. The Doctor proves to be Inigo Montoya in this conflict and handily defeats the Master. Only to turn his back on the Master at the end who then pulls a knife from his sock and throws it at the Doctor. And what happens then? Well, you guessed it - cliffhanger!

I didn't end up watching anything tonight. Still open to 4/Sarah Jane story suggestions to ramble about, I'm currently leaning towards Pyramids of Mars.
I just assumed they were called Silurians because they're Sci-fi Welshmen & the Silures were a Welsh tribe. The native inhabitants of theislesworld, driven to a relatively inhospitable environment by new arrivals, and deeply resentful of this fact. Also Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror was allegedly inspired by HPL learning of his partial Welsh ancestry, and the Sea Devils are quite reminiscent of those monsters.
I can't find a good source for it, probably some rumour spread by a Troper that made the rounds on the internet because of how funny it was. Some writer of a forward from 1971 alleged that it might be because of his parents both dying mad, & Robert M. Price says that it comes from "Fishhead" and "the Harbour-master", his review of the former emphasises the miscegenation angle.Ah-ha-ha-ha! Is that true? HPL discovers he has Welsh ancestry - writes a story about people fathered by eldritch and inhuman monsters. I wonder if he found this out before or after he wrote the Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and his Family. Oh this is too good.
Oddly enough, I also thought that was where the Silurians got their name from. You could do a good Doctor Who story based on Ancient Silurians active in Wales around the time of the Saxon invasion of Britain.
4 with Sara Jane will always be my favorite. That opening theme. I remember this one, you did a good job here.Pyramids of Mars seemed to be the popular choice, so that's the one I watched as "extra credit" for School Reunion, here we go!
-As a general rule, I always like the opening credits that show the Doctor's face, but I did always think this one looked a bit... odd.
View attachment 1620039
I don't know if it's just the unusually somber expression on 4's face, or if they did some trickery to the photo. His eyes look really close together to me though. I'm not going to nitpick too hard though, because this is still one of my favorite versions of the Classic Who theme.
-Did this archaeologist dude just say that the pattern on the wall of the Egyptian tomb was the Eye of the Walrus? (Goo goo g'joob)
On closer inspection, no he said it was the Eye of Horus. What I (legitimately) heard the first time was funnier though, so I'm still going to call it that if it comes up again.
-All of the guys who were helping that archaeologist, run away in terror after seeing the eye am the walrus, and he calls them "superstitious savages". I somehow doubt this would fly these days, but I'm not complaining.
-Based archaeologist opens a secret door with a crowbar and immediately collapses after entering. I guess those 'savages' were right to run after all.
-Our first view of Sarah Jane in this episode, and she comes out wearing an old fashioned (and for what little I know of women's clothing, really frumpy) dress, but she seems excited enough to be wearing it, she'll be wearing it for the rest of the episode in fact. 4 calls her "Vicky", and clarifies that he always liked the dress when 'Victoria' wore it. Fortunately I've 'seen' (well, technically mostly heard) a few of the later 2nd Doctor serials, so I at least get the reference, even if I don't recognize the dress offhand. Right on.
-Sarah Jane makes the joke that, "at least Albert didn't wear it," and the irony of the last episode I watched being "Tooth and Claw" is not lost on me. Yes, this was the right story to watch before School Reunion I think.
-4 says that he's "lived for something like 750 years." But as always, take however old the Doctor says he is with a grain of salt, he's probably lying. And no, I 'm not counting whatever the most recent series of Who added to the continuity. I reject that continuity.
-This white dude, who is apparently watching over the house that will one day apparently be burned down and be rebuilt as U.N.I.T. HQ, is wearing a Fez... https://youtube.com/watch?v=obnblNruPiU:07
-4 just made an offhand joke about Marie Antionette losing her head. I chuckled.
-Wait... The bad guy in the fez was meant to be an Egyptian?
View attachment 1620113
I know some Egyptians have rather light skin, but that's clearly a white dude, I don't even remotely buy him as an Egyptian.
-Whatever, 4 just used his scarf to take down the guy in the fez, just as he was about to shoot Doctor Warlock. Badass.
-Right after that, Fez guy opens a sarcophagus and asks "Are you my mummy?" Ok, no he didn't... but he totally should have. Seriously though, there's a mummy goon inside.
-I'm taking back my praise of that last scene. The editing was really fucking bad... It looked like the white guy in the fez was *about* to shoot Warlock, until 4 stepped up behind him and took him down with his scarf (fez guy still fired his gun, but it looked like he was firing up and missed.) We don't ever see Warlock get hit. After taking fez guy down, 4 tactically retreats back through the door he came in. We don't see Warlock (who was on the other side of the room) escape, or even at all after the gun is fired, until the next scene where both 4 and Sarah Jane are helping him stumble away outside, when he has clearly been shot in the chest. I'm guessing we didn't see him actually get shot because of censorship, but it's still a really sloppy scene.
Laurence: Who is your companion?
Sarah: My companion? Oh, that's just the Doctor. We travel in time, Mister Scarman. I'm really from 1980.
Laurence: That is utterly preposterous, Miss Smith.
Sarah: Yes. Sorry.
Ok, I like Sarah Jane.
-The guy in the fez (I guess his name is... "Namin") is playing a piano and that is apparently now controlling the mummies.
-So Sutekh is apparently also the ancient Egyptian god Set.
-Mister Scarman says that he has an old hunting rifle, but 4 says he never carries firearms (which is a damn lie) it turns out Laurence was trying to say that he wanted to bring it along for himself (not give it to 4) and Sarah Jane tells him to bring it. Yep, I definitely like Sarah Jane.
-Namin is still playing a piano which apparently opens a portal to a cliffhanger monster, the *actual* servant of Sutekh, who kills him, lol.
Part 2:
-Oh wow, cliffhanger monster is actually the Archaeologist guy we saw collapse due to the Eye of the Walrus at the beginning of last episode, but he's evil now.
-This is supposed to be a serious scene where 4 almost gets sucked into Sutekh's portal, but it mostly made me laugh.
-Well Doctor Warlock is dead. I wasn't keeping count or anything, but if Marcus is dead and not just possessed, that's the 3rd geezer to kick the bucket so far this story. (I didnt even mention the butler, but yeah he's dead too.)
-Oh pardon me, they aren't mummies, they're service robots. "Are you my service robot?" isn't as funny though, sadly.
-The Doctor takes Sarah Jane and Laurence to 1980 to show what would happen if Sutekh won. I'm pretty sure this contradicts the way that Nu-who handles this sort of thing- fixed points in time and such but to be honest I prefer this way better. Wibbly wobbly timey wimey I guess lol.
-The show keeps cutting back to this random poacher guy running away from themummiesservice robots. He has not contributed anything to the episode so far, and it mostly just feels like padding every time he shows up. I will say more if that changes.
-4: Not only this world. Anywhere that life is found. Right. All I need now is a magneto.
Me: Er... A Magneto?
Or it's a part to a machine. Right, I knew that. I didn't know that.
-4 basically just confirmed that Marcus is for all intents and purposes dead. So the dead geezer count is firmly at 3 so far.
-Perhaps I spoke too soon, that random poacher guy I mentioned just got group hugged to death.
View attachment 1621946
So yeah, that character was pointless. Eh, I guess he technically showed that they're all trapped in an invisible wall.
-Cliffhanger number 2 is one of themummiesservice robots strangling Sarah Jane while she screams for help. I wonder how they'll get out of this one.
Part 3:
-Well that cliffhanger was a lie. At the end of last episode we see the mummy grab Sarah Jane by the neck for several seconds while she screams. At the beginning of this one, we see the mummy grab her by the neck for like a second before cutting to a wide shot where the mummy isn't grabbing her at all, but swinging at her, and it accidentally hits the machine that 4 needed a magneto for last episode instead, making it explode. Lame.
-Man, 4 is really pissed off at Laurence. I'm sure he's probably been this pissed off before, but I haven't seen it yet. I feel for Laurence though, I'd probably have some reservations about activating a machine that would "kill" my brother, even if he was already technically dead.
-4: No obvious booby traps. Are you going to help or are you just going to stand there and admire the scenery?
Sarah: Your shoes need repairing. I actually wasn't admiring the scenery. I was waiting for you to tell me what to do.
Me: Yeah, I see why these two are such a beloved pairing. They're adorable together.
-I've never heard of "Sweaty gelignite" (the explosive that 4 and Sarah Jane are searching the hugged to death poacher's cabin for.) before, but I guess it's a real thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelignite go figure.
-Wow, Laurence is a retard. I'm sorry, *was* a retard. Looks like the dead geezer count is up to 5 now. And haha as I was typing that, 4 agreed with me.
-I somehow missed that 4's plan was to dress up as one of the mummies to use the explosives. This is great. Adding to that, Sarah Jane is going to fire the rifle to set the explosives off. Very nice. If this was taking place in present day Britbongistan, she's probably need a loisence for that.
-Oh shit, Sutekh stopped the explosion with his mind. But I guess it will still happen if he gets distracted. Oh shit, the Doctor went to distract him in person, and it worked. Sutekh's rocket exploded. But double oh shit, cliffhanger number 3, Sutekh is making 4 lose his shit with just a green stare. I was thinking about ending here tonight and finishing tomorrow, but now I really want to see what happens next. Please episode don't lie about the cliffhanger again. To clarify what I mean about "lying" in a cliffhanger. If I see one thing happen at the end of an episode, and then you totally change what we already saw in the recap at the beginning of the next episode to make what happens next actually work, yeah that's going to piss me off.
Part 4:
-Thankfully they didn't lie this time. Sutekh just decided that 4 was more useful to him alive than dead, this is better than the last cliffhanger by a lot. (And it even makes sense. 4 has already stopped Sutekh's original plan, of course he's going to try something different now.)
-Apparently Sutekh is also the basis for Satan. Right on.
-I held off on calling Sutekh a bitch in previous episodes, even though he kind of seemed like one, sitting in a chair and barking orders to others the whole time... and it seems I was right to hold back. Damn, he is making 4 into *his* bitch now if anything. And that mask actually looks pretty cool.
-You know, this episode just shows how ridiculous being 100% opposed to the death penalty really is. Sutekh is an unrepentant murderer, and given the slightest bit of freedom he's trying to break free to murder again. But the Osirans (Sutekh's alien race that I haven't mentioned yet, even though the episode did), in some retarded fear that they would be "just as bad as Sutekh" if they actually killed him, let him live in an easily escapable prison. This entire story is really their fault. Yeah, they should have in fact killed Sutekh. Especially since it's implied that all the other Osirans are now dead, but Sutekh is still around.
-Oh shit, Sutekh just got 4's Tardis key, and is sending it back to Marcus, where it might actually be used. I don't know where this is going, but I'm excited.
-Oh shit, Sutekh is now possessing 4. This would have made a much better cliffhanger than the one where the mummy was strangling Sarah Jane, until he wasn't like 2 seconds later. And it isn't even a cliffhanger.
-I'm not trying to minimize the significance of this. As of right now, it looks like Sutekh has basically won, obviously he won't by then end.
-Oh ok, I guess Sutekh decided that the immortal alien whom he'd been possessing was less useful to him than that geezer human he was also possessing...
I don't see any logic in that, Oh and hey, 4 is actually alright after being possessed by Sutekh. Was 4 lying to Laurence about Marcus being completely lost after also being possessed by Sutekh? I guess it doesn't even matter now, since Laurence is also dead. Oh yeah, respiratory bypass. (i.e. get out of jail free card.) Nevermind, lol.
-4 and Sarah Jane just got stopped with a puzzle. Sarah Jane just said that it reminded her of "The City of the Exxilions."
Sadly, I haven't seen that one yet, but Google tells me that was a reference to the story "Death to the Daleks" back when Sarah Jane was with Pertwee. Nice callback I guess.
-Sarah Jane just got got trapped in some sort of cylinder. 4 openly regrets bringing her here, but he kind of pushed her into the spot where she got trapped in that cylinder in the first place..
-4 tells Sarah Jane to 'relax'. by spelling it backwards on her cylinder.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=W90s58LtYhk-I've heard this "riddle" before, and sure 4 answered it correctly, freeing Sarah Jane.
-Wow, Sutekh just killed Marcus. The official dead geezer count for this episode is still totally 5 though.
-Sutekh can actually move now, but 4 just trapped him again, haha.
-4 and Sarah just reminded me future the UNIT HQ would be built on the grounds of this mansion after it burnt down, and then they fucking burnt the mansion down. Right on.
-END
Phew, that was a lot of work. I may just leave rambling about classic Who to you professionals reading this from now on. lol.
I am genuinely glad I watched this before "School Reunion," though I mostly just wanted to see Sarah Jane in her prime so that I could compare her to Rose, and I do think I accomplished my goal. See you next time!
The guy who played Sutekh (Gabriel Woolf) also did the voice of the Beast in "The Impossible Planet" two parter, which was a masterstroke because he's got an incredible voice and it was a good callback to his earlier role. He's also reprised the role of Sutekh for Big Finish and in this hilarious sketch some fans made.-Apparently Sutekh is also the basis for Satan. Right on.
This story's actually referenced in "School Reunion" (along with The Android Invasion, Genesis of the Daleks, Planet of Evil, Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Terror of the Zygons). Without wanting to pre-empt your review, it's during a scene where Rose and Sarah Jane are having a verbal catfight which Rose started and is still one of the most objectionable things she has ever done (even though it's short-lived). She of all people has no right to shit on Sarah Jane Smith.I am genuinely glad I watched this before "School Reunion," though I mostly just wanted to see Sarah Jane in her prime so that I could compare her to Rose, and I do think I accomplished my goal. Oh believe me, I will be talking about this at length when I get to school reunion.Without wanting to pre-empt your review, it's during a scene where Rose and Sarah Jane are having a verbal catfight which Rose started and is still one of the most objectionable things she has ever done (even though it's short-lived).
