Duke Nukem Forever 2001 Build Discussion

George Broussard has always been a hack, for starters he didn't even created Duke Nukem as a character, his early games were just simple CGA stuff for DOS that not even Apogee fans remember very much (with the exception of Crystal Caves), he was only a producer on Duke 3D, and only became Creative Director for Forever after being the director for the Atomic Edition expansion, of which he only did partial design for one of the maps, they could have chosen anyone else in the company, and we would have ended up with a game without the years of development hell.

I don't think he understands. With the source code, compliable source code at that, and the assets that already exist, rabid fans will easily be able to fill in all the gaps that exist and turn it into a real game the community of fans would have killed to have. It's just a matter of time.

I never understand why companies underestimate their fans. Some fans have literally worked for more than a decade on unique IP for games released by various companies. You give the community the tools, and if people love what you make enough, they can make it do literally almost anything given enough time.
Try two decades, if we're talking FreeSpace 2. And what, 3 if we're talking Doom? That said, the FreeSpace 2 community is like the most ridiculous out there. The fans have taken the original source code Volition released and turned it into something close to a modern AAA game in terms of quality and polish... never mind features a modern AAA game won't have. You can look at some gameplay footage of recent mods and you'd never believe the engine was first used in 1999 with Descent: FreeSpace.

What's up with all of the part*.rars seemingly having the same exact files?

BTW afaik Windows XP doesn't like the patched version. It calls a bunch of Kernal shit that doesn't exist and proceeds to load into a glitchy mess.
Would try the unpatched version but I think I'll just load up a Win7 image.

How is that possible? VM optimization?

I assume the patched version is designed for more up-to-date operating systems. Lots of old games (probably older than this one though?) require patches to run on Windows 10.

You don’t need to run the game in a VM. It’s fine. You’ll only be fucking around for an hour max before you archive it.

George Broussard doubling down on Scott Miller is hilarious. This is Romero v Carmack in 2022, except neither one of these provided any worthwhile contribution to the dead project they are currently engaged in a pissing contest over. I would really like to get the takes of the development team of the era, and especially people like Joe Siegler.

Scott didn’t even ream Broussard. He said his piece. I imagine lard ass has lost sleep over this for many years and is retaliating like a teenage female over Twitter due to low testosterone levels.

Sorry for being so autistically invested in this. As a kid, I checked Duke4 dot net all the time for any information on this game and became well learned in the lore. I don’t really care about games anymore. I suppose it’s nice to harken back to more innocent times where all one did was play Starsiege: Tribes, download warez from newsgroups, and try to get the latest scoop on DNF.

Funny that it takes just one man to crash it all down...

I refuse to believe consoles cannot handle more than two weapons. I think DNF wanted to chase trends while taking jabs at other successful games.

Scott deserves to say his piece on DNF 2001 as much as Broussard. He worked on it as well.

Shouldn't mention this since its probably not on topic.
Bioshock and Doom 3 came to mind when you mention that. And those games where released back in 2004-07. Except for infinte,we don't talk about infinite

After two decades, the king of vaporware - the true original - surfaces.
And already we got some stuff from Apogee.

Neither of these guys seem to understand the very thing they're in a pissing match over - also George really sounds like he's describing himself by going after Scott when Scott has done nothing but really restate what's been known for years already.

They seem to be stuck in the way of thinking back in those days, too. As stated earlier in the thread, nobody's fucking expecting a complete game.

What this is in reality is a fucking loaded toybox for modders. People are doing shit these days that are mind blowing. Sonic P-06, led by a guy who never has played the original infamous Sonic 2006 already has completely rebuilt the damn thing from scratch and it's superior in every conceivable way. Elden Ring just came out and there's already people staging a GUTS boss in it. Hell, people got their hands on the aborted Sony-Nintendo CD NES prototype that didn't even have games for it and they made some just because they fucking could.

The trailer way back when not being representative of what's actually there is not a problem. The game damn well absolutely is going to become everything that trailer promised. The leaked build simply gives them a place to start.

Some clips taken from the /vr/ thread.

Usually those are really one archive, split into multiple parts. Put them into the same directory and do `$ 7z x part1.rar`, and it will extract the contents from the whole archive, including the other part files.

At this point we need to put them all in a fucking Gladiatorial area and let them Duke it out for Duke. Or maybe get them together to talk out their differences on a podcast with some beer and joints, but that'd be too good for either of them.
