Like. It just doesn't fit. You want trans folks in Rimworld? Cool. It's scifi. It's a colony sim. You could even mod in the management challenge of having to keep satisfy their inherent medical needs to make the player's life harder. It would present itself as quirk to manage to that doesn't conflict with the lore or tone.

But in medieval fantasy? It just doesn't make sense. There's no real justification and if there was it wouldn't be very...dwarven. People in science fiction might be coming from a higher tech place where they have the luxury to sit back and obsess over the superficial fashion of their gender expression. But a harsher setting like dwarf fortress? Too busy trying to defend your home from goblins for that silly shit. Not to mention it just doesn't mesh with Dwarven culture.

One question I didn't think I would ask myself today, are troons a dwarven thing or not.

The thing that surprises me is that the project is still chugging along. Someone over at hacker news once took a closer look at the code years ago (he wanted to reverse engineer it IIRC) and he posted that the quality of it is absolutely horrendous. One example being that the pathfinding is being handled by a horribly inefficient version of A*.

I can't imagine how much of a pain it is to add stuff to this 13-year-old spaghetti code, but it at least explains why the game runs like shit.

Well I don't know about failed, from what we know of Toady he was pretty good at maths. He just really, really loves making DF. He worked on it for years before it even made money.
