There's a few reasons for that.And yet every other game that did face capture managed it without making the characters look fat, and this mistake coincidentally happened after going woke. Odd that.
For one thing mo-cap systems are known to be finnicky and a pain in the ass. The second reason is, the system they're using for their games is mostly proprietary. Sony still manufactures camera equipment and components that go into these that other companies may want. So they're wanting to show off from a technical stand point.
It's also why spiderman had to have Peter Parker's face redone, once insomniac was bought out they had to switch over to Sony's standard for mocap. And why the old data didn't mesh with the new system. The whole big thing with their mocap is that it allows wrinkles and furrowed brows to appear more natural. It doesn't just capture the broad gestures but the tiny body gestures that are usually absent from other mocap systems and can trigger the uncanny valley effect if they're not there.
