Monster Hunter's default control style, at the time, had you positioning your fingers in a weird way, where you used the d-pad, with your left index finger, for camera controls, and then moved with your left thumb on the circle-pad/left stick. It was called "the claw" and looks like image attached. Some Japanese games either had that as the only control style or had two separate ones, with the claw for J-gamers and normal controls for everyone else (still bad because it is a waste of development assets and throws off the "feel" of a game if all of the playtesters giving feedback were using an alternate control style.) Not everything from Japan is better than western stuff and the claw was trash. I think that even Mon Hun has moved away from it with World though, so that battle is finally won.
