E3 (but not really) 2022

Meh
AoE3 got the italians as a faction so I am ok for this year.

I am more interested in the upcoming version of the unificaion mod for dawn of war soulstorm than any of the new games coming from not E3.

Also boltgun may look good but to me it seems like brutal doom toned down and with a faux warhammer skin on top.
I especially hated the pseudo shotgun meltagun which is not lore correct.
Meltas shoot superheated gases and are to be used against armor, space marines have got actual shotguns you know.

Shit on Nintendo for absolutely no reason? We got a Metroid Game this year, we got Star Fox Game last console. The only series he mentioned that has been ignored is F-Zero and why would Nintendo focus on a franchise whose last outing was poorly received and wasn't even ported to America?
2D Metroid is cool and all, but people are understandably more interested in the MP4 and Prime Trilogy. And as has been pointed out, Star Fox Zero was a joke.

Pretty sure F-Zero GX sold decently and was well received, by the way. Miyamoto just said they don't know what to do with the series; aka, he can't figure out a good gimmick and there's not much story for him to rip out. Maybe they can replace all the racers with toads.

basically this whole thread is random bitching about the shitty slate until june 12th. also consider the places games are made and how those places felt about covid. basically the last two years might as well have not fucking happened development wise, which sucks because making games for this generation probably requires 2+ years than usual.

the e3 for the xbox 360 1.5 years after its release we got trailers for bioshock, assassins creed, cod4(modern warfare), mass effect, halo 3, rockband/guitarhero3, tom clancy vegas, which were all released later that year.

you really think Microsoft will be giving us genre defining and franchise launching games next week? gaming has been fucking dead since 2015. honestly the best games of the last decade come from smaller studios that have no fucking reason to be at e3 or announce games during some special event.

you can count on your hands the amount of ps4/xbo era games people enjoyed that weren't ports of older games/cross-gen. and most of those are from smaller companies that take 2-4 years to make a game. honestly FromSoftware could just announce a week before release, the word of mouth would beat any marketing done during e3.

There were quite a few periods of time where you could make that argument about series like Fire Emblem, which is now one of their biggest franchises.
Nintendo didnt even want to bother release Xenoblade in the west until fans complained enough at them

I really do miss the pre-HD graphics days of E3 when most of what they showed would be released within the following 18 months. If something didn’t come out by the following holiday season, something went wrong. It felt so damn refreshing last year when Nintendo announced that not only was there a new Metroid game, but that it would be coming out in four months.

I don't remember old E3 like that, it felt like many devs and publishers or console manufacturers rushed to show a tiny glimpse of something even if there was no game yet. I remember MS being the ones that tried to show things that would be out before the next E3. Maybe that didn't work out so well, neither did their attempt at being honest (they showed Top Spin 2 on the early Mac devkit and it looked like ass, could have gone with a trailer, playable Project Gotham 3 later on and it ran like ass, could have prepped a trailer etc. and they were upfront about trying to not do bullshot trailers. It didn't work out for them.)

Perhaps I’m combining E3 with other announcement events that would occur in the late 1990s-early 2000s, but it certainly felt like there were way less instances of something being announced and then basically not hearing about it for two or more years. There would be occasions like Diddy Kong Racing being announced at E3 that year and coming out a few months later on the N64, a system notorious for game delays that seem quaint compared to how things are nowadays. This wasn’t at E3 mind you, but Square announced Final Fantasy IX, X, and XI at the same time early in 2000 and all three were released by May 2002, albeit XI took longer to make it out of Japan. And now if XVI is released in Summer 2023, it will be nearly 3 years after its announcement, and that’s a pretty good turnaround given the five years it took for Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. If an announcement doesn’t even bother attaching a release year, it’s hard for me to get excited. I could have several life changing events happen before playing that game.

Miyamoto’s full of shit. The truth is that Nintendo has no direction for the series and just wanted to pawn it off to more capable developers. Criterion, known for their Need for Speed and Burnout titles was actually in talks to develop an F-Zero for Wii U, but given their busy schedule in 2010-2011, they couldn’t provide the demo Nintendo wanted in time. Basically, the Wii U was going to launch with F-Zero, but Nintendo’s scouting of a studio went poorly.

I think F-Zero just falls into the category of no one at Nintendo being able to create one. The last big console game was handled by SEGA, so it makes sense. At this point, F-Zero’s fate is tied to outside studios interested in the IP. The problem is that there likely isn’t many takers as Criterion is likely off the table and SEGA isn’t the same company they were in the GC days. At this rate, the Fast RMX people are likely the best option if Nintendo is willing to go more indie.

I doubt F-Zero’s absence has anything to do with gimmicks, and Miyamoto is just saving face for the fact that Nintendo’s devs have absolutely no clue how to make a fast racing game anymore.

Mario Kart kind of absorbed some of the elements to F-Zero.

Their core series promotions and decor that they've pushed out recently doesn't even make mention of it. Animal Crossing and Splatoon have multiple representatives despite being both newer series.

F-Zero is less about Nintendo not knowing what to do with it, and more about that they already have another major racing series so it's just very redundant.

I think it is. The problem with fast racing games is they require precise controls, not something you can do while looking at a touch screen or waggle controls. The Switch might be a better candidate, but joy con drift is real.

Starfox can't have a game unmolested by gimmicks, and given F-Zero was a gimmick showcase (mode 7, true 3D tracks) they likely don't have the confidence to do anything with the polish of GX and since they can't crowbar a gimmick into it, it's left to rot.

I miss Kentia Hall and it's bizarre weirdness, and hardware tech demos like the 128 Marios or that weird Xbox robot demo.

When's the next not e3 showcase? I've been barely following anything as thus far the only thing of interest was FFXVI adding sex.
Summer Game Fest starts 6/9. Not sure if anyone else is doing something before then. Limited Run Games is doing something on 6/6, but they just specialize in making physical copies of digital games or doing new print runs of old games on old consoles.

Limited Run now expanded to an actual retail storefront and have also set up a shop on Amazon.

They have signifgantly grown over the last few years, I think it's only a matter of time before they start behaving like a normal games publisher and get stuff that has yet to be published. I could see them becoming like a NISA or something.
