That's really how it's always worked.The reason so many of these "indie games" copy the homework of actual indie games is that they have no creativity within their teams. We saw a lot of Stardew Valley clones, and Stardew Valley was successful right? So just make a million shittier, woker versions of it!
But the genre is already pretty gay to start. Rune Factory 5 added gay marriage and people really really liked that, so much so it broke all previous Rune Factory and Harvest moon sales records. The special edition was called "Earthmate" Edition" which promoted the fact that the game had gay marriage as a feature.
The farming games are under the larger genre of simulators, so people want to have them reflect their everyday lives to some extent. That's kind of what simulators are supposed to allow you to do.
