Back on the UNDERTALE tangent. I completely agree that the game is nothing like Earthbound.
The humour, art-style, map design and combat are all completely different. It's clearly INSPIRED by Earthbound but I'd say that even Yume Nikki is much closer despite also being very distinct.
It also helps that Earthbound is in a familiar modern setting whereas UNDERTALE is almost completely fantastical.
If anything, I'd say that UNDERTALE is *far* more like Mario & Luigi with it's linear dungeon design, focus on puzzles and dynamic combat with very distinct enemy behaviours.
They're leaning into it even harder with DELTARUNE's overworld hazards and Bros. Attack analogues.
