If he was able to say "I learned to physically set up and wire and then configure a network for small and medium sized companies and then provide them with maintenance and support" that'd be one thing.I think an electrical or plumbing certification would be the way to go. I don't know what this IT career he's describing even is or is trying to be. And that's fine! Honestly good for him for posting the resume at all and attempting to make improvements. But let's get serious now bro you can't be a non-contributing zero for another 2 years, that's hell. Become monomaniacaly obsessed with learning a valuable skill, something people are eager to pay you for, something that you wouldn't struggle to describe on a resume, and then go do that skill.
Even being able to say "I could configure Linux Mint for use by desktop/laptop users switching from Windows/Mac using layouts and compatability layers to facilitate client ease of use and transition from their old work flow, and provide ongoing support" would be a good and specific side skill.
Though the current best and understood application of Linux is servers, maybe learn that.
