I worked at a grocery store many moons ago. Back then (late 90s) you not only had to ask if they wanted paper or plastic and they always wanted paper IN plastic, you also had to ask if they needed help with their grocery laden carts. Of course they always wanted us to wheel their carts out and load their trunks with their EBT groceries. I can’t even count the times I helped people take their EBT groceries to their cars and the cars were BMW, Mercedes, Lexus. Straight up luxury vehicles. I’ve hated the concept of welfare ever since because the abuse of it is so egregious. Also, you really get to understand how revolting society is when you work at grocery store or any service job.

My friends and I used to get gubment cheese when I was in college. We'd buy cheap corn tortillas and fry them into chips, then cut off a 1 pound hunk of the cheese and melt it in a can of Rotel tomatoes. Best fucking nachos ever. You can substitute Velveeta, but it's not nearly as good.

We also used the commodity flour to make stir-and-roll biscuits, and made gravy with saved-up bacon grease and powdered milk from the box. I made BBQ beans out of the monthly kidney bean allotment, and people thought that shit was gourmet (it wasn't, it was beans, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, dry onions, and Worcestershire sauce). We were poor as fuck but our friends didn't go hungry and neither did we.

I have a hard time imagining members of our current society scraping together anything from the raw ingredients in a commodity box. I always thought they should have included recipe printouts for easy common foods that only required a few add-ins from outside the box.
