you can make 20 bucks go far, though. assuming people have basic pantry items, go get a whole chicken, and stuff to make cornbread...carrots, celery. make cornbread stuffing, stuff the chicken, season with salt, pepper, sage, garlic.. and roast that nigger. eat it, and the next day? (you can buy rubbed sage for a buck at walmart, if you get the generic type, it makes a difference)i've been trying to find an old "sermon" by Saint Andersen of Tempe where he went over how many healthy groceries you can buy compared to slop with just $20 or something like that.
FIVE POUNDS OF CABBAGE
toss the entire thing into a huge pot, and simmer it ALL day. take out the bones and add some potatoes, more carrots...let it cook for a bit longer...mix some flour and a couple of eggs, a bit of milk/water, and roll out some noodles, toss into your soup, and you will have enough homemade chicken noodle soup to last for a decade. and that only cost you 8-10 bucks. get a container of oats for breakfast, a carton of eggs, a loaf of bread and small jar of peanut butter for sandwiches.
sure, this would get old VERY quick, but if you are that broke, you have to do what you have to do. cooking is a skill that everyone should possess. if you can cook, you will never starve, even if you have the most basic of ingredients.
