Back when I was nearing the end of my college years, I also toyed with this idea, because I was a bit anxious about entering the workforce and a fully independent life. I thought, it would be so nice to have such a safety net you can fall back on, if shit doesn't work out for you. After I started working, I realized, the existence of such safety net would completely destroy society as we know it. The reason behind that is simple: most people would completely stop actively working. They would just do a few gigs occasionally, to get enough money, to upgrade their rathole with some creature comforts and they would rot there for the rest of their lives. You would think they would be motivated to work, so they could get better food, better clothes, a car, a house, a family, etc., but sadly that is NOT the case. Most people would simply choose to complain about not getting these goodies by default and demand the expansion of benefits. The only reason why the majority of people get up in the morning, to go to work is, because it is a necessity for survival (everything else is just extra). Who would support all the infrastructure you described? Obviously, those few who would actually bother to work. Would they be happy, that most of the money they make goes to support good for nothing lazy leeches? I believe, a system like this would lead to even worse inequality we face today. I have come to the conlusion, my idea and any form UBI, is just communism reinvented, steal from the "rich" to feed the "poor".
Sure, we have billions of people on this planet and I am aware, it is crazy to believe, that every adult really needs to work to sustain civilization. But if we admit, that only a fraction of us needs to work, we face the problem, that we need to decide who actually does the stuff, that still needs to be done, to keep running things. Not enough people would sign up voluntarily, so we would need to classify a group of people, who would be condemned to do all the work, while everyone else just enjoys free life and self-realisation. Who would decide, who belongs to these castes?
As much as I hate the current, shitty dog and pony show, I prefer it over any of the dystopian alternatives.

I do know one person that has EBT actually, though really that's cause they live in a liberal state with a high cost of living. If personally given the choice to get EBT benefits, assuming my life got fucked up, I'd be split between being ashamed to need it and just wanting to milk the government system while it's still there.
