That was the major thing. Even if you could afford to pay whatever outlandish price insurers were asking, you could get denied for individual coverage for things like you had a spider bite in the third grade or headaches or anything else otherwise minor and who cares. If you were lucky enough that had an employer that offered group coverage, well then they had to take you no matter what, but God help you if you lost that job and couldn't find another that offered health insurance.
