This game makes me feel like a geriatric. It's so fucking massive. It seems like there're endless branching paths and my curiosity's pulling me in every direction. I'm loving this. I seldom see games that award inquisitivity this much, if ever. I can't wait to get a bit more powerful so I can comfortably help other players.

I beat Margit first retry this morning after sleeping on it. Then I killed an NPC for screwing me over, then wondered if I should have. Usually I try to keep them alive for all the story content, but we’ll see what happens.

Also, what kind of asshole cuts off an eagle‘s talons and replaces them with knives? Eagles already basically have knives on their feet.

Lastly, does anyone else really hate mounted combat? I feel like my range is never as long as it seems like it should be. I’m also not great in games like Bannerlord, so maybe it’s just me, but I feel like every time I try to run by a group and harrass them, they get in front of me, lock me in place, and pummel me before I can turn my mount around.

Margrit gets raped with the jellyfish ashes so use that if you are having trouble with the bastard.

I went straight from completing the witcher 3 to playing elden ring on the ps, the attack button in TW3 is the same as drinking the kool aid button in this fucking game, I've wasted so many flasks.

Idk how you guys are having so much trouble with margrit, maybe you're just using R1s? He has a very weak posture, two charged R2s and a jumping attack will get you a critical, the game definetly wants you to play differently from past games.

What are some positive/negative opinions from those who played it? Metacritic's "urnalist" reviews are looking IGN-tier vague so I don't trust those. The user reviews are much more negative and constantly mention bad frame-rates, cheap bosses with random attacks, and a paper-thin "open world".

Its shit souls 7:featuring horses
If you liked the trash fire that was souls 3 you will like tax souls

Uninstalled. This game does the same thing the other From Software games do. Cheat. One time I can spirt summon. Then I'm in the same area and all of a sudden I can't spirt summon?

Alot of times I try to summon when it says I can, or use a healing potion in a boss fight, and my button presses don't register. But they did before when I was in the exact same spot and stance. I'm getting too old for that type of crap. Not gonna miss it.

Edit to add: the Bloodhound Curved Greatsword is really, really good. The weapon art does nice damage and the bleed's nothing to sneeze at, either. It's not quite "trivialize every boss" easy, because the Crucible Knight clapped me hard for getting cocky, but it does make things a little easier for me.

Every Souls games buffers inputs a little differently. It's something you gotta learn/relearn each time. Usually my problem early on is pressing too early, then when I finally get the window accidentally buffering two inputs because I'm used to the first one being missed, then it's fine.

Summon only works near statues of rebirth (obelisk things you never see) and there's a cooldown or something. There's an icon at the top of the screen when you can do it. But I usually go by seeing the quick items turn on that I keep next to my flask.

Took me a while to get the feel of but I love it now.
Mounted attacks have a long wind-up and are very positional and weapon/moveset dependent. It forces you to fight "realistically": line up and charge then scoot and use your mobility. Or strafe groups with heavy attack which can hit multiple enemies once it's ready then smash the last dude on release. You might even want a dedicated horseback weapon if you normally use short attacks since they seem logically more effective: my winged scythe is fantastic for hooking back at dudes behind you after juking their attack compared to my epee which is long but only good for direct pokes which gets me fucked by spearmen.

Genuinely the best mounted combat I've ever seen in a game.

The healing thing happened to me once during Margit and it was 100% a glit h. Definitely wasn't a game implementation.

Console I haven’t had an issue with framerate. There’s definitely places with serious mob spam issues (like Dark Souls 2 ambushes, sometimes) and everyone non “Hollow” feels like their stamina bar is double yours and they will just hit spam you until your guard breaks if you even bother trying to block. Also, some of the enemies have pretty cheap abilities even on their own - this game’s version of Dark Souls black knights have a wind attack that knocks you back, for exampke.

That said, I’ve been finding all sorts of crazy stuff. I’m one of the few people who didn’t like BotW at all, but this is what I wanted BotW to be. If I ever find a hangglider it’ll be perfect.

The first castle you enter has so many different paths that it’s probably bigger than Anor Londo by itself. There‘s some seriously fucked up enemies in various places the grafting spider, giant Baba Yaga hands, eagles with knife feet. If you liked Dark Souls, esp 3, this feels like more of it, but more open. It has some definite improvements, and some really irritating parts, but it’s definitely a Soulsbourne game - down to basic archetypal characters sharing the same VA’s they’ve had in the previous games. There’s a Big Hat Logan type and a Siegward type, and I think a Greirat as well. And instead of souls it’s runes and instead of estus it’s…. Chalices? And instead of chalk it’s fingers.

I dunno, it’s probably not my GotY, but I’ve put 14 hours in this weekend, and I rarely do that with games.

It does feel weird that you can skip tons of enemies. Even if they're obviously placed in a spot to guard an item you can still run by or use the horse and grab the item and gtfo. Most of the bosses I've fought we're pretty easy -reminding me a lot of Dark Souls 2 where the presentation is cool but the boss was really easy if you've played a Souls game before- excluding Margit. When I get 20 hours into it or so I'll have a more fully formed opinion.

I'm not sure what to think of the horse.

The boss has a million follow ups so even when they do a leaping attack or an attack with a ton of wind up you ALWAYS have to be aware of the follow up. ALWAYS.

Anyway...

The Claymore has a really good weapon art.

Gotta say, I've been loving it so far. The mounted combat is one of the only games that I've been able to actually use, unlike Witcher or Skyrim. Still janky as fuck, but whatever. Also, with the dungeon and roaming bosses, the difficulty feels schizophrenic. Most bosses I can kill in a few tries, or even first, than I got stuck on Godrick for a huge chunk of time.

I feel like I had a hard time finding a good weapon that I enjoyed using. Wound up using the lance from that roaming mounted knight boss right outside the tutorial.

Even though they're optional whoever designed the Fallingstar Beast needs to eat a dick, both fights are a pain in the fucking asshole. Literally more difficult than the main bosses sans big fucker from the reveal trailer.
Edit also:
For those of you having issues with Margit, GOOD LUCK

I feel you homie, I've been switching weapons like crazy looking for the one thing right for me. I thought the Dragonslayer was gonna fill that niche, but it swung too slow for me and got my ass killed too many times. I'm stuck with this +4 pickaxe I got from a mine, but I'm none too pleased with the short range of it and somewhat slow swing time. Gotta find my waifu Claymore ASAP.

I could never get more than one charge in before he'd buttfuck me with a dagger or some other bullshit attack.

I'm only about ten hours in, but I've been having a mostly good time. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. There are some extremely bullshit bossfights, they feel... I dunno about 'unfair' but very cheap in a lot of ways, full of delayed attacks and tricky bullshit that feel more like From is directly fucking with you rather than actually trying to give you a fun bossfight. Some people really like this type of boss, I guess, but not me. The game makes up for it with excellent mob enemies, I have fun fighting almost everything I encounter and they feel a lot more fair and challenging.

The open world is great and packed full of detail. It feels like there's something new hidden around every corner, and even areas I think I've cleared have new discoveries that keep surprising me. It's so nice to play an open world game that doesn't cover the map in question marks and little objectives. I would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone that's on the fence.
