I hope that everyone involved with the design of the Crucible Knight dies a painful death from colon cancer in Minecraft. Why does this random ass optional boss have to be the first I've seen to get three phases, where the second almost completely removes his one weakness and the third provides a further countermeasure to stop you from killing him with 1000 paper cuts. Margit at least wasn't shielded from damage 99% of the time and didn't gain a screen wiping attack....

I seriously hate this fucking boss.

It's the only boss in the game where I've had to double take from how stupid it is. nothing else practically requires you to actually use magic to beat it unless you want to spend an hour trying to punish unpunishable attacks.

52 hours in I finally found an incantation I like that isn't Fire Sling.

Also I don't think this was posted yet but the PS5 version at least was patched yesterday and what framerate issues there were seem to be gone.

You could summon help for Ornstein and Smough, and summoning was a big touted thing in DS1. That'd completely ruin the fight and make it a cakewalk, but yeah, you could do it.
To attempt to clarify again; I am not advising you to use summons. I don't care how you play.

Console I haven’t had an issue with framerate. There’s definitely places with serious mob spam issues (like Dark Souls 2 ambushes, sometimes) and everyone non “Hollow” feels like their stamina bar is double yours and they will just hit spam you until your guard breaks if you even bother trying to block. Also, some of the enemies have pretty cheap abilities even on their own - this game’s version of Dark Souls black knights have a wind attack that knocks you back, for exampke.

That said, I’ve been finding all sorts of crazy stuff. I’m one of the few people who didn’t like BotW at all, but this is what I wanted BotW to be. If I ever find a hangglider it’ll be perfect.

The first castle you enter has so many different paths that it’s probably bigger than Anor Londo by itself. There‘s some seriously fucked up enemies in various places the grafting spider, giant Baba Yaga hands, eagles with knife feet. If you liked Dark Souls, esp 3, this feels like more of it, but more open. It has some definite improvements, and some really irritating parts, but it’s definitely a Soulsbourne game - down to basic archetypal characters sharing the same VA’s they’ve had in the previous games. There’s a Big Hat Logan type and a Siegward type, and I think a Greirat as well. And instead of souls it’s runes and instead of estus it’s…. Chalices? And instead of chalk it’s fingers.

I dunno, it’s probably not my GotY, but I’ve put 14 hours in this weekend, and I rarely do that with games.
That's not the first time I've heard it has the most similarities to DS3. I actually liked DS3, though it was my first souls game. I only really want to get Bloodborne and play that but the retards won't let PC players have it. How is the story? The vague nature of a Soul's plot does interest me with figuring out the mysteries yourself, but it needs to be going somewhere. Does the "germanic" folklore touted as inspiration actually come out in the plot? Or is this just a "make a giant Yggdrasil tree an be done with it"?

So I never played any of the Fromsoft games before and have just started playing this and getting comfy with the combat and whatnot.

Any non spoiler'ish advice for a new player to this whole thing apart from "git gud"?

I don't like Dark Souls games that much but I do have to say I am loving exploring the open world, finding all these mini dungeons to explore, kill a unique boss, and then move on. My biggest problem so far is what class to play and focus on. Spellblade, a Bandit, or the Samurai? I keep jumping around.

Oh can some one explain how the parry works? Like what is the best way to figure out the window to do it Do I have the shield hit the blade of the mob attacking me?

Some of these are pretty obvious and well-known, but there might be a thing here or there which is helpful to know.

Learn to identify the visual differences in startup between single-swing and two-swings. You can punish him with a single attack after most of his attacks, two after his four-hit stomp-swingx3 combo. You generally want to roll into him for this reason. I used a longsword both times so far, although I assume there's a weapon that does better damage type and attacks fast enough out to fit in his windows (heavy weapons will get you hit).

Never initiate with him, ever, even if that genuinely does mean standing still for five seconds as he plods around you with the shield up. When he does the shield bash or drags his sword on the ground, those are both stances that will fire early to punish an attack or an early dodge, so you have to learn their timing exactly for a dodge, and the sword on the ground can be followed up by a slash.

When phase 2 begins, your window for counterattacks is the tail. Dodge the regular attack, then don't attack just yet. Wait for the sound of the tail, then roll into him and attack once. If he does not do the tail, you don't counterattack, and you just get ready for another regular attack - he can fire the tail extremely late into recovery and often will, so even if it looks safe to hit him, it isn't. The one exception is the 4-attack string, which is still safe to hit him twice afterwards. With a status dagger, you might be able to do two attacks in these windows, idk.

I actually wouldn't call it inspired by germanic folklore, this is the idea of germanic folklore as concieved by 19th century Germans. It's a algemation of germanic, nordic, and christian lore. There are references to the works of Goethe, Wagner, and Nietzche. You got

That's totally fine by me, Wagner is great. I'll rephrase my question. What have you seen (besides the tree) that pays homage to the men you mentioned?

Gotta say, I've been loving it so far. The mounted combat is one of the only games that I've been able to actually use, unlike Witcher or Skyrim. Still janky as fuck, but whatever. Also, with the dungeon and roaming bosses, the difficulty feels schizophrenic. Most bosses I can kill in a few tries, or even first, than I got stuck on Godrick for a huge chunk of time.

I feel like I had a hard time finding a good weapon that I enjoyed using. Wound up using the lance from that roaming mounted knight boss right outside the tutorial.
Any tips for Godrick, and the tree knight? I’m stuck on him and I iust started dicking around elsewhere. I also got frustrated with the greatsword and zhweihander and went full basic bitch and got a longsword.

Kind of regret going with confessor instead of the mage hybrid class.

Its dark souls 1 plot but with roots and the OOOOOOOOOOO ELDEN RING

For Godfrick he's weak to poison so summon jellyfish bro. Also treat him like a Bloodborne boss. His combos are to strong and there are too many in a row for blocking to be effective so dodge and punish his leaping attacks.

Body type may be A/B, the slider for the voice is still masculine/feminine. Troons will never escape their voices.

Any tips for ancient hero of zamor? I keep dying during the second phase
Not sure if you want to hear this but Learn-2-Parry. I am really happy that the parries in this game feel way better than DS3. Try to smash him a few times and then parry the first attack and whale on him a bit but not enough to trigger the phase change and then parry him so that he switches phases with as little health as possible. You can get a bunch of attacks in while he buffs up but be prepared to haul ass when he does the new and improved winter storm that he will always follow up with that dash attack.

Just try to evade all the cuh-ray-zee shit and get your parries down and you'll be fine. Getting some free attacks in from behind when he does his ice breath attack is good too. Plus you feel like a total badass doing it. I didn't do many charged attacks because he's too agile.

I have to say the game's performance on the PC has been underwhelming. Stutters abound, random frame-rate drops, and settings that appear to do nothing when adjusted as far as I can tell. Really, really need another patch. I nearly shit myself when I first installed it without the latest drivers because the game literally kicked me out saying it didn't work good enough.
