So it's the horseshoe theory in action?Yes. Belief in the singularity is a religion for people who think they're too smart for religion.

a.k.a. Rapture for Nerds.Yes. Belief in the singularity is a religion for people who think they're too smart for religion.
I view as a nerdy version of the Age of Aquarius, but instead of world peace, robots make the world to confusing for modern humans (I think).a.k.a. Rapture for Nerds.
I just had to read Nick Bostrom's book on superintelligence for a uni assignment, and it turns out that he has referenced none other than our favorite autistic jew.![]()
It's crazy to think that a real Oxford professor would reference something from an online forum where people write My Little Pony fanfiction and throw away their money to appease the future computer God.
I don't see why anyone would want to build a sentient machine. What transhumanists don't get: the great thing about robots is that they're less smart than people. That way they can do boring, repetitive work for which humans are far too intelligent.

"Screw you guys, I won't do any more of this dumb welding stuff. I'm off to read Plato and travel the universe."
People who brag about being rational probably aren't that rational. The way I see it, anyone who brags about how "rational" or "objective" they are has to be bullshitting. Everyone has their intellectual "blind spots" that you'll discover sooner or later.
Besides, you all know I'm the most rational human being in the multiverse.![]()
I don't see why anyone would want to build a sentient machine.
For industrial or domestic application, a slightly below-human intelligence equivalent would probably be optimal (that is, chimpanzee- or dolphin-like cognitive capacity) -- note that I said "equivalent", that is, these machines shouldn't have feelings or self-awareness, so we could use them as a labor force without doing something morally horrible like the Greeks or Romans with their slaves. Such robots may be some decades away.I don't see why anyone would want to build a sentient machine.
Haven't you ever wondered what sort of morality could develop from being fed a steady dose of shock images and horrorcow thread postsI don't see why anyone would want to build a sentient machine.

Rollo/The Rational Male is a good example of this. I always feel like these people admire Spock from Star Trek a little too much.People who brag about being rational probably aren't that rational.
Necroing, but I couldn't find anything on Dragon Army, and this seemed the place for it.

Basically, the response to being told you're maybe in a cult? Make plans to start an actual cult. It will end up not being a cult by virtue of your unflagging rationality.
The first rule of Extreme Nerd Club? Spend hours and hours writing up the Extreme Nerd Club charter document.
What is Dragon Army [Barracks]? It's a high-commitment, high-standards, high-investment group house model with centralized leadership and an up-or-out participation norm, designed to a) improve its members and b) actually accomplish medium-to-large scale tasks requiring long-term coordination. Tongue-in-cheek referred to as the "fascist/authoritarian take on rationalist housing," which has no doubt contributed to my being vulnerable to strawmanning but was nevertheless the correct joke to be making, lest people misunderstand what they were signing up for. Aesthetically modeled after Dragon Army from Ender's Game (not HPMOR), with a touch of Paper Street Soap Company thrown in, with Duncan Sabien in the role of Ender/Tyler and Eli Tyre in the role of Bean/The Narrator.
a lot of rationalists live in group houses
Autism Incarnate said:I have a unique combination of expertise that includes being a rationalist, sixth grade teacher, coach, RA/head of a dormitory, ringleader of a pack of hooligans, member of two honor code committees, curriculum director, obsessive sci-fi/fantasy nerd, writer, builder, martial artist, parkour guru, maker, and generalist.

I mean, like everything LessWrong, you've really just got to read that entire wall of text, as the goodies keep spilling out with every paragraph. Just skimming, someone's qualifications are listed thusly:
high investment intentional communities
I was going with "sodomy proving grounds".That's a lot of syllables to say "cult."
