Email alternatives

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Some nerds do it to flex, but do you really want to spend your time defending your little email server against every bot and script kiddie on the internet?
I run my own email server. If it's set up correctly - you can sleep at night. It's the spam filters that you will be perfecting for years. If you are in a single public mailing list you will get dick pill spam for the rest of your days.

If you just want to pay someone to manage mail for you then there is Fastmail, Runbox, Posteo and multiple people have brought up Tutanota and Proton. Proton and Posteo do have a biti of a bad reputation now a days, so note than.
If you want a inbound only box you can get a cheap domain from cloudflare and use their email routing to have anything sent to something@example.com forward to example@gmail.com but note its receive only.
Also if you still want your data sold switch gmail out for outlook, yahoo or GMX.
With all that it's still a good idea to keep multiple email aliases for different things.

Yandex Mail somehow won't let me transfer my Ya.key account from one phone to another, and if I try to log in to Yandex Mail from another computer, even after scanning the one-time password QR code, it errors out. For fuck's sake.

Good thing I am not logged out on my main computer, but this is such a pain in the ass.

I may or may not be in the market for an email alternative, in case I don't find a way to solve that. Skimming through this thread, I am leaning towards Skiff Mail, especially since it's suggested on privacyguides.org.

Guess I'll look into it shortly.

I've been using Skiff for a while. Despite the company's headquarter being located in San Francisco, it does appear to be one of the better privacy oriented email services. One feature I really like is Quick Aliases. It allows you to create a junk email domain on the fly so you can redirect spam services. The aliases can be deleted and spam will go into the ethers with no recipient.

Cool, thanks for the insights, fren.

What plan are you paying, btw? https://skiff.com/pricing

Cock.li has has open regs for a month now (after just earlier this year I actually scrounged around for an invite).

I don't use it for much, and I have heard it's common for it to go straight to a spam/junk folder or not delivered at all. But, if someone knows to look out for your email, or they're on it too, it's nice. I'm using it with IMAP.

The free plan is sufficient for me. I don't need anything the paid tiers offer right now.
Went ahead with Skiff. So far so good, other than the fact that the free tier only allows for a limited number of folders. I am a big fan of mail filters so I file everything under a folder - I only have a handful now. Guess I'll bite the bullet and go for the Essential tier later on.

They have a nice Android app, but no Linux app. Other than that, this looks nice and comfy.

Edit: Pretty interesting interview with the CEO of Protonmail.

I run my own server with Postfix, Dovecot, RainLoop, and OpenDKIM. I have not had trouble sending/receiving mail from most providers.

I got fucked by proton for having too many emails, 2 out of 14 got suspended, is it a problem and should I look out for anything? I want to have like 16-20 emails, is there any other service I can use or should I wait for a while before I start using proton again.

Just got an email from Skiff saying that they are removing their email and other services in 6 months.

Skiff × Notion
Dear Skiff Community,
We are excited to share that Skiff is joining Notion.
Skiff's mission is to bring freedom to the internet by helping people collaborate and communicate with freedom and privacy. We see a deep alignment with Notion’s vision to build a connected workspace and enable everyone to build tools that reflect their values.
We’re extremely excited to accelerate our mission by joining forces with Notion’s world-class team. We sincerely hope that the Skiff community will join us for this next stage of our journey. We’re pursuing big plans for making all of our online lives freer and more empowered, and these plans will carry forward directly the ambitions we’ve strived for alongside the Skiff community.
As we begin to shift focus to our shared efforts with Notion, we will be closing down Skiff's product suite after a 6-month sunset period We are deeply appreciative of the trust users have extended to us, and we are committed to honoring that trust by ensuring that all data on Skiff is easily exportable. For the next 6 months, Skiff services will continue to operate without disruption, and users can freely duplicate, migrate, or export data. You can now also set up a forwarding address to redirect mail to any other provider.
Our commitment to privacy and security is unchanged. All user data remains end-to-end encrypted, and Skiff products will never monetize your data. Accounts and data on Skiff will not be converted into Notion accounts.
We encourage you to export your data and migrate custom domains within the next 6 months. We’ve prepared this guide to make that process as easy as possible. For any other questions, our support team is readily available via the in-app “Send feedback” option or at support@skiff.org.
The Skiff community has lifted, inspired, and energized us at every step. We are humbled by your support and we apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience this change may cause you. We remain as committed as ever to bringing about the vision for a better internet that brought us together. Thank you for being part of the Skiff family, and we look forward to continuing to serve you with our future efforts.
Sincerely,
Skiff Team

It's so over, bros.

Good thing I've slowly moved my stuff to the other email provider, from Yandex to Skiff. I'll be moving to mailbox.org, seeing as it's still ranked pretty well on PrivacyGuides.

That didn't last long. Very unfortunate. Not sure what's next now.

I'll move to mailbox.org, let's see how it runs.

On second thought, Tuta doesn't sound too bad either, plus they have an Android app which is pretty convenient.

Again, I am lucky that I didn't go all in on Skiff and only switched email addresses to a handful of services, so it's not so bad for me. Either way, it sucks.

Tutanota is alright for burner accounts, just be aware that they terminate your account if you haven't accessed it in 6 months. Lost my KF account this way, RIP.

I guess you're better off with Tutanota and mailfence nowadays.
Eh, not by much.

Correct, Tutanota, they have a 6 month inactive account deletion policy. https://tuta.com/support/#inactive-accounts

As for Proton, it's gotten a bit worse if you aren't paying for the service, excluding grace periods; it's now 1 year of inactivity. https://proton.me/support/inactive-accounts

I'd like some advice. I host my primary e-mail myself, but also used cock.li for the hell of it. Well, the big corporate e-mail providers, mostly Gmail, have blocked it for years. Furthermore, the centralization of e-mail has led to many places whitelisting provider domains. I was forced to make a Proton Mail account, and I'm about to have full storage. Frankly, I'm scared that they'll lock me out if I try to back it up using one of their tools. Is my safest bet to dox myself to these Swiss and then use their tools? I loathe the idea of even giving them five dollars, but it's not the end of the world.
