Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

How is it fraud or bait and switch?
>promise people a steam key
>constantly talk about steam keys
>suddenly EPIC STORE
>not bait and switch

yeah nah, fuck off.

You do realize the 30% take goes down when a game sells a specific amount of copies, which is different for Triple-A and indie devs. Combined with the fact, with that 30%, devs are allowed to make keys they can sell on various key sites and make more cash for themselves, without giving steam a cut.
it's even more dumb since people like our newest thread retard never can do any research or fucking math either. imagine a shop giving you free keys you can sell for whatever cut you want, wherever you want, but no MUH THIRTY PERCENT IT'S HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

I really can't get this 30% cut as a "gotcha!" moment, specially when on steam devs can easily patch their games when someone like Sony charges..what...1000$ for anytime devs wanna patch a game?

I think that changed by now or might be tied to certain other factors (only certain size or around certain days like launch etc.). I know dj fish used it as an excuse to never properly patch fez on xbox360 (but back then MS had all kinds of retarded restrictions, like the parity clause with sony releases etc.).
either way it would completely smother the indie scene which is the majority of games since they simply don't have the money for that.

but yeah, it still ignores the other services steam offers, most of all payment processing and fraud prevention. otherwise you get dipshits like tinybuild whining about g2a when some russians and south americans exploit their MUH 100% CUT webstore with fake credit cards and the chargeback fees put them in the negative (and they can't even provide a list of keys to disable, g fucking g).

with gaming being mainstream it's statistically impossible not to get a fair share of retards everywhere, see above...

They take 30% from everyone because they have a monopoly?
They all do that though. Timmy Tencent only made a big fuss about it because Tencent - being a chinese asset - can afford to lose some of that infinite money.

Yeah, Fish acted like a cunt and refused to make a patch for Fez, even after Microsoft removed the paywall and the Xbox team offered to help him.

This is why I still haven't and never will play Phoenix Project even though they walked this back a YEAR after being on EGS.
lol, didn't even know they did it too. was thinking about shenmue 3. and everybody knows the metro exodus stunt. fucking deep silver, I swear.
shitshows like that and still using steam for discussions and support while selling somewhere else made even gaben take a break from dota to chance steam's TOS.

Why do gaming journos exist at this point? No mention of Linux/Steam Deck in the entire article. At this point Epic reeks of desperation with their new program

Yeah I'm sure the 50,000+ games store is going to be facing a huge threat from the 2,000 or so on Ebig, especially when Ebig has to burn giant piles of money like the Joker to get even that many.

I'm not even sure "games journalists" even do exist any more really. I wonder how much of this bilge is just gimped versions of ChatGPT infused with SJW shit.

Sometimes I forget that not having an approved opinion on the internet is "trolling".

So instead the failures get punished along with the successes?

So if they're getting 70% they won't publish shitty games but if they got 100% they would? Weak line of logic.

So shit developers shouldn't be allowed on Steam? Almost every successful developer made shitty games before they had their hit. Some were on Steam, some weren't. We should hit those people for the full 30% on their way up... why?

You're just defending the status quo. I don't know why people do it but that's all you're doing here. You refuse to see things from another perspective and we could go around and around for pages on this but I don't really care. My position is morally superior and I'll stick by it.
Here's an interesting little tidbit for you - let's assume for a moment that your breakdown of revenue sharing by Steam is accurate.
It self-evidently isn't, but for the sake of argument, let's assume it is.

Do you know what Steam doesn't do that Epic does? Force platform exclusivity.

When you release a game on Steam, you're not only releasing it onto one of the biggest marketplaces, but you are, in fact, being able to release on said marketplace and every other one that isn't Epic. The only stipulation is that you don't intentionally undercut the prices. Which means if you release on Steam, you can also release it on GOG, or GreenManGaming, or your own fucking website where you take 100% of the cut.

Going to Epic restricts your work, for a sizable chunk of time at the very least, to that platform (and pisses off your customers if you were an asshat and advertised on Steam first), and the alleged larger userbase Epic has doesn't inherently mean more eyes on your game because the majority of those users are there to play one specific game, and you fucking know that's the case. Going with Steam, meanwhile, means you can release on literally every other platform.

That whole article reads like an ad.

"For what it's worth, a lot of developers prefer the Epic Games Store over Steam for one reason or another."

Lol, no. The only advantage Epic has to offer is more profit share, and I'm sure that's not worth it at all. There is nothing pro-consumer aside from the free games, which means Epic users are more than likely just going to hold off on buying your game because it might wind up free. And of course, pirates can just release it for free to everyone, and I'm sure plenty of would-be Steam & GOG buyers will just pirate instead of having to deal with Epic.

I'm not even sure "games journalists" even do exist any more really. I wonder how much of this bilge is just gimped versions of ChatGPT infused with SJW shit.

Another article written by this "Ray Ampoloquio" reads:
Whether you're a Mario die-hard, a Switch enthusiast, or someone who loves the color red, the Mario Red Edition offers a unique blend of branding, design, and gameplay that stands as a testament to Nintendo's ability to keep things fresh.

That sounds exactly like a ChatGPT line.

This is allegedly a picture of "Ray Ampoloquio," who basically doesn't exist except for that byline.

If he isn't just AI shit, he could easily be replaced with it.

it isn't. back when timmy tencent made a big deal about his MUH 30% CUT, even some game journalists (think it was eric kaine or someone else at forbes iirc) pointed out that with the steam keys valve let's you sell wherever you want for whatever cut you agree on, the actual cut valve takes is more around 20% with that factored in.

not to mention all the other shit valve takes care of and subsidizes with their cut, like regional pricing etc. timmy already said during the apple trial the 12% cut is not sustainable, so if he had succeeded replacing steam, devs would be right back where they started and paying 20-30% anyway (and probably for less service and platform features too, like a fucking shopping cart that took years to appear).

Does Epic even have a plan for when all these juicy exclusives dry up? Steam has a larger platform and better service. GOG has DRM free games and old school support. Microsoft has their gamepass. And none of them are trying to chain you to their platform
