Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

Shills Journos are mad at the Darq guy for daring to be open about his experience with Epic.

I just completely fail to understand how they can spend this much money and not have an even functional store.
How? They're a corporation. A few chimpouts from uppity stakeholders is all it takes to make a monumentally bad decision. I imagine it went something like this:
  • Chimp: Hey my kid says everybody plays Fortnite.
  • Epic: Cool, thanks, we're happy with our success.
  • Chimp: Yeah, about that... I need to buy more golden yachts to compensate for my micropenis.
  • Epic: Uh, okay, how can we help?
  • Chimp: Well Valve only made like a few games and then got rich off of Steam right?
  • Epic: Yeah but they were the first of their kind and they kinda have a monop-
  • Chimp: Right, exactly. So I'm thinking why isn't the company I own doing the same thing?
  • Epic: Well you see it's beca-
  • Chimp: Because I expected to make a gorillion dollars by now, and if I don't start seeing a return on my investment I'm gonna sell you off so I can buy part of Steam.
  • Epic: Oh no, please massa, we'll make a store, we'll get all of the money in the world for you.
  • Chimp: Good, that's what I like to hear. When will it be ready?
  • Epic: We'll need at least a year, we don't have the kind of staff we'd need to create and support it right now.
  • Chimp: Okay, well I actually need it to be ready by six months ago.
  • Epic: Sir, we don't have a time machine.
  • Chimp: Sure you do! Take all the staff you have now, everybody from programmers to janitors, and work them like dogs so that next time we meet the store is good enough that it looks like you completed it 6 months ago.
  • Epic: Janitors? Are you seri-
  • Chimp: Nuh-uh mister, don't you backsass me. Now be a good boy and I'll give you a treat.
  • [Chimp stands up and audibly unzips his pants with his back towards the camera]
  • [Epic looks at Chimp's crotch and then at the camera, a look of resigned despair on his face]
  • [Seinfeld Theme plays]

Google Stadia now has an exclusive on thier platform, Orcs Must Die 3.

It doesn't appear that they pulled an Epic manuver (buying a game that was crowdfunded and advertised on a different platform) but they are now officially in the PC exclusives game.

As if Epic Game Store needed more bad news, Google is going to be able to massivley outspend Epic if they feel like doing so - the price of exclusives sounds like it just went up by a large factor.

While i enjoyed Orcs Must Die 1/2, that's one weak exclusive.

Also what the hell is it with these On-Live knockoffs anyway? Everyone knows they're already shit because light can only travel so fast, and if you have even 5-10ms latency between you and the server, that is some significant input lag that would push you off in any competitive setting, not to speak of those who happen to have 10 times that, and even that is "reasonable" latency.

I honestly don't get why people are so ass mad about EGS. If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple.

We're a bit more jaded and critical over here than in china.

reminder that you don't need to download the epic launcher for free games, you could always sail the high seas

I wish I did that, there was a leak a few months back and I got a shitload of password requests and weird emails for a while. Should've never given up pirating for having my games neatly in a library for free.

I think the main reason Valve hasn't already sued them is they're doing nothing but hemorrhaging money anyway.

If I was younger I'd wish valve would just sue the shit out of them, but now I realize that courts are a disgusting money pithole where even if you win, you lose.

So hey, i looked at the throwaway email i made my epic account on when i tested Fortnite, because i finally remembered what it was. Here's a couple of screenshots of the mails on that account.

A couple of email-chains highlighted. Can you guess what these mails end in?

I have only one response to this.

Another day of Epic Game launch woes, it's minor and fixed now, but it really makes me look forward to them trying to handle the Borderlands 3 launch with no preloading.

I will be honestly amazed if launch day is merely an unpleasant experience instead of the latest Epic fuckup.

So we've got two new exclusives, one I can kinda understand given the game's troubled development. The other...I'm not actually sure what they're doing in terms of exclusivity.

The first is Oddworld: Soulstorm.

https://www.pcgamer.com/oddworld-soulstorm-is-the-latest-epic-games-store-exclusive/

They, unlike most of their recent developers, actually took the high road and basically just said "Look, the game's development is troubled, Epic offered us money to actually finish the thing, we understand and we're sorry, but it was either get the exclusive or slow production to a crawl".

The other is Magic The Gathering: Arena.

https://www.pcgamer.com/magic-the-g...-exclusively-to-epic-games-store-this-winter/

They say they want to bring it to Epic Games Store for "new ventures" and for "more people to experience Magic".

Even though the game is F2P. And has its own separate launcher. And it's something you can still download right now on the main site right now. So...it's a half exclusive? ...Ish?

...So why on Earth would you ever use the Epic Games Launcher over an actual functioning launcher for a single game?

Even if absolutely shitty, in the vast majority of cases i'd say you shouldn't regulate if it's in any way avoidable. Regulations always have a lot of collateral damage (see article 13 in EU). It should be something that the public itself pushes against so that it is not encouraged, and the public should be informed why this is the case. It takes quite a push to make those cogs turn, though.

It's because it was cracked ages ago and there hasn't been a day when it has stopped a 0-day release. That being said, publishers still do believe DRM will somehow get you more sales, and DRM implanting is a staple of publisher contracts. DRM stopping piracy was only ever really true for a short period of time for a select few really shitty Ubisoft titles that no one really wanted all that much anyway.

The other side is the awful shit that DRM sellers do, and this is in the same vein that GameGuard does (for those that have the misfortune to know what that is). They get a contract with the publisher to provide copy protection (or "cheating prevention" that doesn't fucking work and happens to be a rootkit and a major security risk) for several years at a time with usually a clause that forces them to put in every game that they put out.
>DRM stopping piracy
It doesn't. That's why the next step is streaming the game's video to the end user. Also it's a double whammy as every company with it's head in the darkness known as their anus claims "everyone has a phone".

Corporate idiocy aside, DRM only ever hurts the customer. Mark Cuban actually had enough brain to use pirates for archival of HDnet's productions instead (it's the reason why HDnet's D-VHS releases weren't copy protected like most D-Theater tapes were).

One can also describe pirates as the "whales" of entertainment. In this case, Joes/Janes would be "fish" while DRM is a "Harpoon".
What is a whaler that keeps catching fish with his harpoon, despite not getting the whale that the whaler's trying to harpoon?
