I like your theory, but I do want to add that he seems to be very insecure and controlling, which also fuels him. It's why he can't be normal even if he tries, he will always have his nature drive away others. Even if he becomes successful, he'll only be briefly not miserable for short periods at a time, the times he finally stops thinking about being the best in the room or having to be such.
This is a horrifying insight. Imagine you took a young man, somehow emptied his mind of all knowledge, wisdom, all memories and habits formed by childhood development, family and community relationships... in other words just wipe out his humanity and personality.
