It's a huge concept and even a foreign concept to consider and comprehend to younger minds unfamiliar with such concepts. The runnings of government, how America got its start and why it did so are big esoteric concepts that are best learned through going through American government history, but that's boooring. If you're under 19 I can forgive part of it, if you're over it and been to college or bother to comment on history related politics I can't. It's hard to imagine the concept since it is a lot to keep track of and today most young people see slavery as a TERRIBLE FUCKING THING (justifiably so) that NO good or non-evil person would consider doing. But the American Civil War was about racism/slavery, the economy, and state's rights, possibly in equal measures depending on what person you talked to back during the conflict. Human views on things over time change, and it's hard to recognize the more conceptual and law related concepts if your world view is based on good OR bad, and maybe bad but fan turn good plus good but can turn bad.

That was a lot of words to ease into saying this comic writer is a stunted (wo)manchild who cannot see anything from a historical context and opts for the exaggerated good and evil view.

Good history programs still teach historiography because it's shockingly hard for people not to be presentist and view history only from their "future" perspective. One of the main methods involves remembering that your subjects didn't have that knowledge you do so you need to pay attention to what they really could have known. Not in the traditional sense of "everyone in the past was ignorant based on today's standards" (which is true and to be avoided in some respects) but in the LITERALLY DID NOT KNOW THINGS WOULD HAPPEN sense. Of course you don't trust Hitler or Stalin or whoever because you know what he went on to do. But also remembering stuff like America wasn't seen as a legit world power but the little brother of Europe for a long time, liberal democracy hadn't worked anywhere but the UK and US, farming was still how most people lived, etc. in various eras you may be studying. Or stuff like thinking they must have more primitive thinking because of lesser technology but in fact people picked up on stuff like railroads and telephones almost immediately. Just like how all of us adopted cell phones and then smartphones and didn't even really think deeply about it ever. Dudes in the past who were smart would be smart today but they'd also start off with our advantages, there's no reason to think this would make them stupider today. (A similar thing to keep in mind when comparing across eras in sports, those old timey dudes would have spent their careers with modern medicine, improved travel, coaching/development levels, a whole giant team apparatus instead of having to have regular jobs too, etc.)

I wonder if, given our current cultural landscape, it wouldn't be better to tell people that history should be treated like a TV show or other fictional story in that you and the characters aren't supposed to have precognition of events, causes and ends. Though this wouldn't help with those insane people who insist bad things should never happen to characters.

Though I must admit a personal interest in the history of ideas, knowing slavery or whatever is wrong isn't as interesting as seeing as how people came to decide this and then it became the mainstream view. I doubt most people care as much about the process of coming to the correct view when you can just adopt it from others and then yell at everyone else for not being as brilliant as you are.
