I would’ve thought they’d try & paint the pagan societies as innocent victims and claim that the vile acts they supposedly performed were cooked up entirely to justify such brutality against them. A really small number of them would probably defend the vile acts themselves.
I don't really see how human sacrifice for religious reasons is any different than a Christian society doing executions. The outcome is the same.

I shouldn't have responded, but there is a line between killing oftentimes innocent people, oftentimes brutally, as part of a religious ritual and killing convicted criminals in a relatively timely manner. It helps that Christendom treated executions as a dirty and somber business that needed to be done to ensure justice on earth, in comparison to the glorification of human sacrifice and the priests doing it as seen in the Aztecs for instance.

Also, the fact that societies where human sacrifice was common oftentimes were aggressive in order to obtain prisoners to sacrifice is another reason why it is incomparable to the execution of individual criminals.

But why the strong opposition to sacrifices in Christianity in general? Couldn't you just allow only people who would otherwise be executed to be used as human sacrifices? And why do Christians generalize all Pagans and make it sound like they all did human sacrifice when the polytheist Greeks and Romans opposed human sacrifice before Christians were even a thing?

God doesn't want any sacrifices. Why would you make sacrifices to a deity who doesn't want them?

I never heard that about him, but I know he used to give all the responses in Latin even after the Novus Ordo (a new form of Mass said in English) was brought in.
I recall his nephew or other younger relative tell that story somewhere since they were the ones who took Old Man Tolkien to Church one day and there was some stupid bullshit going on between the Catholic High Ups about Latin Mass alike it is these days, and Old Man Tolkien was ultra pro Latin and showed it loud and public during a less-than-Latin Mass, old man'esque cane waving included.

Oh no; he clearly wanted sacrifices back in the day; he just only wanted animals at the altar, not people. Only changed to prayers due to a mixture of Christians interpreting Christ's death as the final and greatest sacrifice, or due to the Temple being demolished in 70 AD. Samaritans still do them actually.

Also human sacrifices at least among the Canaanites tended to have been more similar to the Incan/Andean practices than say the Aztecs; it was done, but usually when all prior offerings failed and things were REALLY fucked for them.

Depends on who you ask and when you ask it.

The Atheistic obsession with debunking Santa for children is strange. They should do the opposite if they want to encourage skeptical thinking. Hype up Santa as gospel truth and then shatter it like normal families do.
