And he's not actually being forced to pay money to listen to a story about an imaginary friend, but, making him THINK about it is PERSECUTION!!!!!!ELEVEN!!!!!!!

@RedneckQuadFeed , you never fail to deliver in this thread. I think I cut myself on all that edge.

I found a Christmas-related article that occurred in Lincoln, Nebraska. Atheists muscled in on a Nativity scene and erected a happy humanist statue & a "reason tree." wow

Funny how I never see these idiots going after Hanukkah and/or Ramadan.

Of course, there is plenty of fedora-tipping in the comments.

It would be nice if every house in Lincoln put a nativity scene in their front yard.

You know what wars are absurd, too? Wars over nationalism, greed, and resources. Number one cause of war, my ass.

"I can't get away with being a exceptional individual to spite religious people! Political correctness (TM) is ruining the entire WORLD!!!1!!"

In regards to cause of wars, I'm sure resource reasons would give religious reasons a run for money. Same goes for ethnic reasons and nationalistic reasons. As for that other one, which was posted earlier, the worst church does as far as I know in hearing a sermon would just be doing the offering/tithing thing. And it is completely optional. Plus as I mentioned in an earlier post, playing porn in church were there are kids is illegal, right? That alone could get one in trouble if they decided to pull that sort of edgy move.

The two largest and costliest wars in all of recorded human history (in terms of lives lost and collateral damage done) were not started due to religion, but aggressive nationalism. Even the atrocities committed within the greater context of WWII against the Jews were nationalistic/ethnic in nature, not religious. Nazi doctrine held that Jews were practically a different species and expendable due to their inherent racial inferiority, not because they worshiped in a different way.

Most, but not all "religious wars" were actually resource wars given religious justification to avoid having to worry about moral qualms, and to rally the people to the cause. Same goes for the ideological wars of the 19th and 20th centuries.

"Expendable" is a far nicer attitude to Jews than the Nazis actually had. It would be a lot closer to their attitude toward slavs.

This has always been a hallmark of antisemitism. It's not the way we worship God, it's the horns we hide under our funny hats.

Whenever I've mentioned Lemaitre, I sometimes get, "yeah, but think of how much more he might have done if he WEREN'T religious!!!" WTF? Like the Big Bang Theory wasn't enough for you? And what the hell have YOU accomplished, besides accumulating an impressive collection of fedoras and Cheeto-stained Dr. Who tshirts?

Besides, the guy was a Jesuit. Those guys are hardcore when it comes to learning. They'll whoop your sorry ass in a debate.

I used to put Dianetics in the science fiction section, but it's deliberately miscategorized and put into the psychology section.

To be fair, Scientology deserves to be made fun of, no matter if you're euphoric or not.

Going to war over resources can be completely rational
Though rational compared to claiming that God told you to go to war, one can still see it as a bad in a moral sense. Still, the point was to say that the primary reason for war isn't always religious reasons.

Agreed, it's more rational to arrange a way to buy/trade resources from others than take them by force-of-arms. I'd wager one of the reasons that major, industrial, modern nations don't' war with each other these days is because technology means that even with tariffs, markups, taxes and all that, it's STILL cheaper to buy something than war over it. In all the fulminations over non-US made goods that the more conservative politicians get hung up on, not a single one really thinks the answer is to invade China.

Know what else is a common thread of modern nations? Not a lack or religion, but a lack of it directly driving policy.

Euphorics are right that running a country though what God says is foolish and ripe for all kinds of abuse, what they don't seem to notice is the only countries that actually TRY it are, well, shitholes, thanks to said religious nutjobs being in charge.

These days, they're generally Islamic countries, but the Islamic sacred cow can't be criticized. It's horrible when Christians do it, though.

I'm atheist, but I am laughing so hard right now.
