Didn't alchemy, the predecessor to chemistry, also get its start in the dark ages? Pretty sure it was also something that was popular with the religious crowd back then.

Actually, the principles of logic reasoning, which are indispensible in modern mathematics and natural science, were refined during the middle ages. Catholic scholars of the medieval period were expert logicians. Starting from the work of Aristotle, they developed the method of logical argumentation and reasoning to a very high level -- in order to solve problems of theology and law. Modern mathematics, and by extension science, computers, robotics, etc. wouldn't be possible without the groundwork laid by the scholastics. And this is where they really need to brush up on their history and get some perspective. The Middle Ages (a time Euphorics love to harp on as being religion-centered), started because of the collapse of the Roman Empire. Or, as you might want to put it the entire structure of civilization and society up to that point. It's really hard for us to imagine a decline in the structure of government like that, but it would be as if today every major government (US, UK, China, etc.) just closed up shop and let the people fend for themselves. Would it be chaos and anarchy, with power struggles by local bigwigs trying to grab a bigger piece of the pie? Yes, and that's exactly how it went down then, and it lasted for hundreds of years.
Christianity moved into the void (since it was the only structure large enough, old enough, and powerful enough to do so) and helped maintain some semblance of order. The church was a poor replacement for a governing empire, but it was all that was left. So to fault Christianity for "trying to control european society" or "trying to control science" is really divorced from the reality of the situation. Fact is, if it weren't for Christianity, Europe would have declined much faster and much farther after the fall of the Roman Empire. As it was, it took almost 1,000 years between the collapse of the empire and the establishment of the modern nation-state, which for all intents and purposes meant government had regained the level of sophistication it had pre-collapse.
The list he cites comes from the work of Steve Wells, a figure renowned amongst atheists for his great feat of going through the entire Bible and misinterpreting it on purpose. Then he goes to list some site links to where he got "An incomplete list of God’s murders, killings, infanticides and other crimes against humanity".
OK, obviously the chart is a joke, but here's the thing that stood out to me: what exactly do they mean by "science"? Because if there's anything my history spergery has taught me, it's that different areas of practice advanced at different times and even went backwards. To say science was a straightforward upward slope from the Egyptians to the Greeks to the Romans is hilariously inaccurate.
This is The Chart:

and I capitalize it because it and its variations are actually an in-joke among historians and history nerds.
...Because Atheists are the best authorities on how to be Christian?I’m surprised how seriously some of these guys take Bible Literalism, suggesting that it’s the only valid interpretation. I’ve heard some atheists say that everybody who doesn’t follow that book to the last word is a failed Christian and therefore a closet atheist.
Com’on dude, sounding like my grandmother is the biggest turnoff.
These Euphoric types are fueled by their own arrogance. They think they have intellectual authority on everything....Because Atheists are the best authorities on how to be Christian?
Uh huh. I had one very vocal encounter where the EA condemned the Catholic Church for "telling teenage girls to get pregnant and have lots of abortions".These Euphoric types are fueled by their own arrogance. They think they have intellectual authority on everything.
I watched SecularTalk videos before. He's part of the TYT Network. He used to be alright but I heard he's fucked up plenty now.
Yeah, I didn't want to get back in to this at least until after the reason rally, but some you just can't let slide.
One last thing is, I know I've sperged out about this guy before and I know now that I should stick to this thread for shit like this, but Kyle Kulinski, aka Secular Talk, is the most smug,, annoying, arrogant euphoric you can come across. The amount of smugness and condescension in his videos is unparalleled. Far too many examples exist to list, so just go to his channel at your own risk.
