Elementary tended to skimp out on Social Studies, even before Common Core was a thing. The main reason is that again there was always a heavier emphasis on LA and Math over Science and Social Studies, so much so that there's a reason why as a kid you often swapped science lessons with social studies one in the k-5 period... if you even had enough time left that day to do it. It just got worse due to the new added federal mandates that coincide with the state curriculum. A great teacher took advantage of connections between the content so they could effectively still cover what they needed in spite of it (if you're creative enough you can splice anything), but not all teachers are great in that field. In the pre-Common Core days, I was learning a good deal of American hsitory even before going into junior high. I recall it being world history during 7th and/or 8th grade, then having specific social studies classes in high school of different topics like current events, government or WWII.
I'll upfront state I learned more on history via self-study than by any teacher in that field until at best the 6th grade.
