Italy did an awful job at the penalty kicks.
We had the upper edge and Pellè totally wasted his chance with a horrible ball.

So Germany won today... At least they have the honor of finally beating their rivals - due to sheer dumb luck, unfortunately. Too bad it looks like they're gonna win the whole thing at this rate, as lovely as it would be to see anyone else do that, instead...

I've always been puzzled by the lack of football's popularity in the US and Canada, since both countries have strong ethnic communities from countries where football is so important. Up here, it's difficult to get people to pay much attention to sports outside of hockey. MLS does have a devoted, if small, fanbase, but it barely registers on the national sports screen.

Then again, Curling is a popular sport here, so maybe it's not that surprising after all.

You can blame the NY Cosmos for that. When Soccer started making a rejuvination in the 70s, the predecessor to the MLS sprung up, and the NY Cosmos forced it into a bankruptcy spiral by outspending all of it's rivals who would then take enormous financial risks to compete, and it never recovered. Which is why when NY Cosmos fans say they "deserved" the 2nd NY team slot in the MLS that was instead awarded to NYCFC, many people say they can go to hell. (Which is also ignoring the fact that the current Cosmos is just an in name only continuation).

This is also the main reason the MLS has strict financial controls right now, to prevent that sort of death spiral from repeating itself.

Fuck Italy, cheating diving cunts. Glad they're out.

How shit must it be to be an England supporter, watching the team that put you out get pumped stupid by France. Could see this going five or six nil.

Edit: LOL could see this going seven or eight nil.

To be honest, I'm glad Germany won - they're the better team. I'm just disappointed it took as long as penalty shots to get it over.

I'm not surprised Iceland is losing to France, though - while I was happy to see England eliminated, it;s pretty clear Iceland never stood a chance against a team like France... Sigh.

Italy is a fucking big team. Italians in germany are extremly annoying, unfortunately. So glad we shut them up.

Edit: Italians are only annoying regarding football. Not generally. I forgot/was too drunk to add that!

I was really happy to see Italy out, especially after Zaza's penalty. What the fuck was that all about? Doing that silly wee dance instead of just charging up to the ball and blootering it. Even funnier is that fact the manger brought Zaza on just for the shoot out.

Literally Just Ronaldo scores against 11 sheepfuckers. Man, if we're winning with literally just one guy, I wonder how we'd do with a whole team. Care to comment on the events, @Shokew?

EDIT: Here I was thinking Portugal only had two players, Ronaldo and Pepe. Apparently, there's a third player called Nani I didn't know about. And he scored a goal right after Ronaldo. Weird.

Nani played for Manchester United for years.

I hope Germany destroy Portugal in the final. Boring bastards who scraped by on draws. Congrats Portugal on tonight though. You finally won a game, well done.

Go Blitzkreig on them you Teutonic cunts.
Thanks.

I thought we won three, but if you want to place arbitrary rules on what winning is and isn't, I guess that's fine mate.

Thanks.

Portugal got 3 draws in the group, scraped by Croatia in extra time in the last 16 and got lucky in penalties in the quarter. Tonight was the first win for them in a 90 minute match. This is hardly tournament winning form.

Yeah, I know. I just like to banter. I think a lot of it was just being unlucky, and a couple teams played defensively (i.e. Croatia, Poland). Honestly, the Wales game was the only one I actually expected us to win.

Still, for all the shittalking Portugal gets, we still have yet to actually lose a game. And besides, if a bunch of shitters playing badly are in the finals, what does this tell us of the other teams?

I think Portugal have been quite lucky with the teams they got in the group and in the knock-outs. They've been lucky to avoid the likes of Spain, Italy , Germany and France. I think the final will be their first real test. I hope their manager doesn't park the bus again. It can be a bit shit watching a team play a 10 man defense. I was disappointed Holland didn't qualify, I can't remember a tournament they weren't involved in.
