Well, the concept is just weird. We have an American creating a game which takes place in a Japanese high school (or, at least, an amalgamation of anime portrayals of Japanese high schools) featuring a student murdering people to get her crush to love her. There have been dating sims and there have been games about stealthily killing people, but combining them is… novel in an uninspiring way. Sometimes I think that (in my abundance of free time) I'd like to make yet another Yandere Sim clone just to see how much better I could execute the idea than hack coder Alex, but then I remember just how dumb the idea is and immediately drop it. I'd rather make a more straight-up Hitman clone that doesn't take place in a Japanese high school pastiche. Hell, I'd rather make a straight-up dating sim (that, again, doesn't take place in a high school).
Well, I can't say, that the concept is utterly hopeless. I think if you stop to take it dead seriously, like Alex does, you can turn it into something funny. IIRC it supposed to be meme-game about anime cliches, but Alex quickly turned it into simulator about his deep dark fantasies with torture and selling rivals to yakudza. Imagine shit like this in "Bully". People love this game, because it is light-hearted and in the end you are a good guy (and because it's competently made, yeah). Now compare this to the Edgelords simulator. It's like HATRED, only not over-the-top enough to be so-bad-it's-good. And what's worse, Alex tries to make it reallistic, but has a very weak grasp on reality. I have a couple of ideas how you can turn around this concept, but I'm not a game developer, so who cares.

"YAN CHAN NOW HAS GHOSTLY VISIONS OF OSANA WHEN HER SANITY'S LOW" – just like the YS fanbase.

I watched the video and it looks like another glitchy feature. Fights are broken, apprehension is broken, everything's broken.

Also, the Patreon predictably dropped to the lowest levels since who knows when, as Graphtreon doesn't have data that old:

This is just my two cents, but that entire low sanity update is shit and it proves Alex is shit.

1. It's shit
Gameplaywise, I can only assume that the low sanity mechanic is supposed to be a mechanic. In a hypothetical game where the sanity mechanic did not exist and your target is in a room with 4 other NPCs, you have no reason not to just stab all 5 of them to death and call it a day. The sanity mechanic is supposed to dissuade you by attaching a very severe penalty to that easy solution, namely absolute insanity. The idea that you automatically attack anyone within range (without regard for who may be watching, any teachers present etc.) sounds good, but it has two big problems that completely rob it of impact.
a. It doesn't happen when you don't have your weapon out. So by just not having your weapon out (or even dropping your weapon), you rob this penalty of all of its force. This is just as retarded and mechanic-undermining as they keycard that makes the metal detactors (you know, the penalty for killing a student council member) irrelevant. Instead this should happen whether or not you have a weapon out or even on you (why wouldn't someone who's absolutly lost it just choke a bitch with her bare hands?).
b. Getting rid of this is too easy. Right now you can get rid of low sanity by either getting close to Senpai or laughing. Getting close to Senpai makes sense: it has a reward (instantly gets rid of your insanity) but also a risk (you need to get to Senpai in the first place, potentially walking past multiple NPCs that you will brutally kill if you get too close to them, which could result in a game over if Senpai notices you). Laughing on the other hand has too high a reward for too low a risk. Originally Alex had planned for a mechanic where Yan-chan could lower her insanity by going to a restroom stall and using pictures she took of Senpai to... "relieve stress". As gross as it may be, this would be an all-round better mechanic. First of all it has a risk-reward mechanic (you need to get to a bathroom in the first place, probably requiring you to get past a lot of NPCs), you need to plan ahead for it (taking suitable pictures of Senpai without being noticed), it would grant utility to the bathrooms for the player and it would also serve as in-game character building/establishment (establishing Yan-chan as the obsessed freak who would do such a thing to calm down).

2. Alex is shit
The low sanity status now has a visual effect: the edges of the screen become smudgy. On his blog Alex claimed he promised this feature in 2014 and implemented it now, five years later. Excuse me, but five years for such a simple effect? FIVE YEARS?! If that doesn't prove Alex is way in over his head, I don't know what does. I don't see how anyone can have any faith in him after an unabashed admission that it took him that long to implement a simple effect. It's not like he was too busy to do it. Well, it's not as if he was justifiably too busy to do that.

My waiting-for-the-bus yansim grumbling of the day:

Find your camera object in the scene. It has a canvas on it or one of its children. Create a new object inside the canvas and add an image component to it. Select the component and set it to scale with parent and give it zero margins so it always fills the canvas regardless of the canvas’s size. Go fingerpaint up a smudgy border in painter or mspaint or something and assign it to the image component. Drag the image up the hierarchy so it’s the first object listed inside the canvas and is drawn before the rest of the normal UI. Congratulations, you’ve recreated the Yandere Simulator vignette.

One of unity’s biggest strengths is that if you want to do a half-ass mockup of something it’s very easy and fast to do so without even touching code, and I’m positive that almost anyone reading that above paragraph could replicate the effect in under 10 minutes even if they’d never used unity before due to everything being explicitly labeled and the problem falling into the domain that is very easy to solve solely with unity’s GUI. How does this take 5 years?

Also worth pointing out that using an image for a border like that is going to look absolutely horrible at any resolution other than the one that matches the image, but fixing that would require using another standard free component that comes with unity and another dozen mouse clicks. That’s just too much work.

Jay's new video is an absolute embarrassment to this new update. I've never seen a build more buggy than this. I'll be surprised if Yandere-Dev doesn't get mad at Jay for exposing how broken this game is; but good job Alex! Way to prove all of us wrong and fail at adding some simple sanity mechanics

And the YanSim fan girls/boys think that Alex is finally doing progress... SMH
I don't even understand why Alex makes it even harder with new sanity mechanic to get away with murder. It makes the game buggy and the visuals make it hard to see anything.
Edit: Wouldn't be surprised if Alex did this to slowly make murder no option to beat the game in order to make it more family-friendly...

I doubt he himself understands his spaghetti code.
Besides, the whole idea of making Yan Sim family-friendly is like making a fuel-efficient Lamborghini. Good idea, terrible/almost impossible in practice.

Only Alex can truly understand whatever the hell he's planning, but if we use my reasoning from my previous post and we're generous to Alex: it's to prevent you from cheesing the game by just killing everyone in the same room as your rival. It makes murdering someone risky and creates a possible penalty, meaning you'll have to plan out your murder of your rival more carefully.

Wouldn't surprise me either. In one of his 4chan posts he already promised non-lethal solutions wouldn't be possible, yet we already have two: dating and friendship. Technically three if you count framing (which hasn't been implemented and probably never will).

Hmm, when you go low on sanity, your vision becomes desaturated and blurry, while you have to fight shadowy creatures. Where have I seen that before?

(Is joke, no bulli pls)

That was the first thing that came to mind for me, too. I expected the shadow murder hallucinations to start lunging at you when you walked by them after you'd hit a specifc level of sanity since that could make a fun jumpscare, like a more in-your-face version of the big bug shadow in DS.

Of course, the guy was just saying not to trust them and that their theology is an affront to God (as evidenced by the fact that He's been stomping their disobedient asses since time out of mind), but he sure as hell didn't advocate for killing them.

At around :40 "...but I don't want the games development to be delayed any further." You can't add any time to a project with no release date.

I also love the fps when he starts talking about the insanity meter. It is 120 when he is filming on the roof and then it becomes 50 when he is outside showing off the intrusive thoughts stuff.

Things of note from the video

After I realized how difficult it can be to play Yandere Sim for the first time, I felt inspired to put a tutorial into the game. The original plan for the game's tutorial was a scripted sequence where Kokona asks asks yandere-Chan to rehearse a play about a serial killer...

Something that's actually useful. Is Alex getting better?

However, it would be time-consuming to add this type of sequence to the game, and I don't want the game's development delayed any further..,

No, nevermind. I think 5 years of "debug build" can count as development hell.

...so I decided to include a different type of tutorial that could be added to the game much faster. Here's what I came up with - when a player triggers a certain criteria, such as damaging their reputation, a tutorial window will appear to provide information about the current situation.

I don't think telling a player "you fucked up" after they fucked up is very useful. We don't need Captain Hindsight here to understand we did something wrong, unless the game's design is a massive clusterfuck. Makes you think.

...but I'll save that for sometime the future, probably after the game's crowdfunding campaign.

:optimistic:

...I started noticing all kinds of game design flaws and huge glaring problems that I have been ignoring up until this point.

So, the entire game, basically?

When I first introduced student council, I stated that they would send you to the guidance councilor if they caught you misbehaving. I... completely forgot about this until last month.

He completely forgot about a feature he implemented into a game. What a great developer.

As of now I have finally added a map to the game.

Something actually useful.

The ability to hide your identity with a mask was too overpowered [...] To balance this feature, I decided to give the senpai a unique reaction to witnessing a mass murderer. I've decided that senpai has a strong sense of justice, and feels disdain for people who commit evil behind a veil of anonimity. The sight of a masked murderer will fill senpai with disgust, and cause him to disregard his own safety and disregard the murderer at all costs. This means that if senpai sees you commit murder while wearing a mask, he'll run up to you and rip the mask off your face, which will cause an instant 'game over'...

So, senpai is stupid and suicidal?

Several years ago I stated that students with "social butterfly" persona would react to murder by running into a crowd of students and hiding among them. However, the game never actually functioned that way... until recently.

Once again, a feature he said was in the game wasn't actually in the game.

So I've updated the sanity feature in a number of ways. When Yandere-chan's sanity drops very low, she will begin to have... intrusive thoughts. [...] these thoughts will be perceived as ghostly visions of Yandere-chan performing gruesome murder animations on her current rival.

Well, it sounds cool on paper, but doesn't do absolutely anything other than bloat an already bloated game.

She will also lose her self-control, and start involuntarily giggling to herself, which will attract the attention of people around her. [...] And finally, she will become unable to resist her murderous urges, and she will automatically attack anyone who is within range, without any input from the player.

So it is, to borrow a phrase, a "cock-up cascade", and you might as well restart the game.

Every month I look at Yandere Simulator and ask myself 'Is it ready for the first rival yet?', and the answer is always 'No, I can't justify putting a rival into the game, while there are still so many broken mechanics, design flaws and missing features'.

"I can't justify putting a basic mechanic my entire game revolves around into a debug/alpha version of the game until I add fluff features that add no value of any kind"

Unfunny "intrusive thots lol xd" joke with big busty boobies at the end of the video. I tried to preserve as much context as possible without bloating the post too much. Nothing really beats actually watching the video if you want full context.
