As an outsider to the Yansim thing just a week ago, I was very confused about a lot of things. I'm an engineer, so a lot of what was going on seemed very easy to fix.
After reading up on this case, I'm actually impressed at just how incompetent Alex is as a developer. I actually don't think he's a developer in the slightest. The technical challenges he faces are very easy to overcome, from e-mail to the actual game. But the issue is, he's not in it to build something, like developers are (with recognition/fame/praise being secondary, albeit nice). His goal is to run Patreon, YouTube, social media, and be famous for the project. You can see this from his earliest interactions on IRC: he wants recognition for doing something very basic, but his actual goal wasn't building the game, because if it was, the feedback he received was very valuable and could've pushed him to succeed. I think it's clear he's a narcissist who will latch onto anything to try and get that hit he's addicted to.
The thing that convinced me was the tinyBuild fiasco. Nothing he said about their interactions were actually true. Refactoring can be done piece by piece. Modifications to code are usually localized. Fighting over minor changes really translates to: he's "that guy" who refuses to allow anyone to change his code because he's too proud of his own accomplishment. tinyBuild was trying to protect its interests as a publisher and get the game finished and out to make money, but he refused to let them do it. I don't know if he was actually scared of the game being finished (probably), but they certainly couldn't do anything for him if they weren't allowed to contribute in any meaningful way.
Since Alex will likely read this thread, I have a simple piece of advice: step the fuck back from the game's development and let qualified people from your fanbase finish it. Just give them a percentage of the revenue. You can be the face of the team and reap all the public reward you want like designers/producers in big game studios do. You can still guide development to see the game be what you want it to be, but for fucks sake let people who aren't shit at making games make the game.
