This is actually a really common bug in bad programs: The case of not cleaning up after something goes wrong. Somewhere in the student script I guarantee there's something analogous to this block of code:

spawnBodyParts(); // runs fine
doOtherShit(); //throws an exception
sawedInHalf = false; // invalidate the conditional so it doesn't run over and over
}
}
As a result, every frame the game spawns the body parts, crashes out of the block and never clears the conditions that would keep it from calling the block again. Since unity does its own exception handling outside anything you write it doesn't take the whole program down and the block is free to run and crash again on the next frame. If you see anything happen a billion times in a Unity game while the framerate tanks this is probably the cause.
Mildly OT, but I feel like we need a videogame shitshows subforum separate from Games. The discussion in the last 30 pages has covered 4 or 5 different people and there are other threads floating around that would fit, plus new ones seem to pop up fairly regularly. Maybe just a devcow tag; the Goodbye Volcano High and ValiDate threads definitely deserve it since most of the content in them revolves around their staff and it would be nice to be able to find new threads with cows in them from a distance since they can be funny even if you don't give a shit about the game
