I'm out of the loop on recent Yandere Dev lore. Is he even making the 3rd rival or not? I rarely check his blog and when I do all I see is Amai.

The current breakdown of the rival completion is
  • Osana: 90~95% (the only "officially complete" rival, but supposedly there's some additional content like special eliminations that aren't implemented). In essence, she is finished but in a simplified form of what was originally promised--as with everything from this project.
  • Amai: 40~50%. Not actually complete. At this point Mahan is beginning to rush development because the YanSim follower base tracks the game progress quantitatively based on the number of rivals finished.
  • Which brings us to Kizana, who is only present in a cutscene I believe and not part of the game yet. It seems he wants to set up the rivals shallowly without taking time to fully develop the content for each one as he did with Osana.
But it doesn't matter anymore, because people are already predicting Mahan running into a wall with later rivals. This is for three reasons:
  • the development perspective: no one expects him to actually complete all 10 anymore, at this rate. Look how many years it's been.
  • the gameplay perspective: he fucked up the difficulty curve. It's already clear, even without 2 complete rivals, that the difficulty progression won't ramp up uniformly with each week, because Osana is generally considered much more challenging than Amai. It's hard to conceive of how he could realistically ramp up the difficulty over the course of the other 8 girls, some of whom, story-wise, have no reason to be hard to kill (e.g. not many friends, not an important person with high social status at the school, etc.) People are joking that Megami would have to have surveillance cameras and bodyguards everywhere, and Mahan doesn't seem to refute the idea. He said, at least, that the point of her ridiculous gloves is so that you can't frame her for crimes.
  • the story perspective: the development, backstories, and lore of the characters is so truly and genuinely shit that no one is invested anymore. Because the game has taken so long, Mahan has had way too much time to introduce convoluted Undertale-tier bullshit to what should have been a simple dumb story. For instance, the point that the Saikous are actually related to the Aishis--let alone the thing with Fun Girl, who is a ripoff of Gaster, who was himself a ripoff of Uboa (from Yume Nikki).
TL;DR don't expect anything, because even if he finishes everything will still suck.

PS: Has anyone mentioned how Oka (fourth rival) was actually in the game at the start, but he *took her out*? :stress:

I'm confused about the surplus calculations.

So the surplus was about $19k last year, he used $2k to pay volunteers, how does that leave the surplus at $13.5k? I'm not complaining because it means the surplus is going away faster but it raises suspicion as to how he's using the extra money.
Maybe he is just shit with numbers? I mean, he is already bad at programming and it is not so far away from simple math logic.

Jesus Christ, I thought he would learn something from breaking Mai Waifu on his first day with her.

That would be, what? His third sex doll? Fourth?
I know there's no actual proof, but there is precedent.
Third if he bought another one after the one he bought after Mai Waifu.

There's some fuzz in graphtreon numbers from user churn - when you sign up, Patreon automatically charges you for that month, and then charges you again at the end of the month as usual. A high deviation between the expected number based on steady subscribers and the actual number would point to churn, as people sign up mid-month and get billed instantly, around the same time that others quit, keeping the patreons number itself stable. Combine that with declined charges at end of month bringing the actuals down, and you have a range that the 'real' number can end up in that's hard for a number archive to actually represent.

That 50% difference is a bit extreme though, so it does raise doubts. He might just be padding these numbers as well.
There are also problems with other numbers. He is either lying or just that bad with math. His latest response about Sisefs had dates all wrong despite the fact that he could just actually check them all online.

There are parts from the update blog post that I wanted to highlight.
I live in southern California, which has recently been subjected to high winds. Exceptionally powerful wind can snap tree branches right off of trees. Sometimes, those tree branches land on power lines. When this happens, huge wildfires can start that burn down hundreds of acres of land!

My electricity company doesn’t want to risk being responsible for a massive fire (and thus getting sued for millions of dollars in damages…) so, whenever there is a “high wind warning,” they shut off electricity to my entire area for between 12 and 24 hours. It’s been happening a LOT recently. It sucks to sit alone and bored in the cold darkness, but it sucks even more to be thinking, “I could be getting so much work done on Yandere Sim right now! Everyone’s going to be so disappointed in me and mad at me!” the entire time. I really hope that you can be forgiving about this.
Called it. I knew he was going to bring up the wildfires to garner sympathy.

Also this part:
I really hope you understand that being the director/manager/producer of Yandere Sim is a full-time job all by itself, leaving very little time to be the programmer as well. …wait, didn’t I make a graph about this exact topic? One second, let me see if I can find it…ah, here it is!
1738688828948.png

When I made that graph, I really meant it. The majority of my time is spent talking to artists, animators, composers, modelers, and voice actors (yes, I’ve been reviewing a lot of auditions recently, too), and actual game development progress is made in whatever scarce amount of time is left over.
I really hope you don’t get the impression that I’m complaining; I’m not saying, “Damn those ultra-talented volunteers, how dare they generously make incredible assets for me?! This is all their fault!!” I’m just saying that there is a LOT more to game development than just typing code, and during some 2-week periods, the non-code aspects of game development are going to eat up all the available time, leaving zero time left for the code-related aspects.
It's not the first time he's made this type of graph and explanation. It still makes no sense to me.

He's just trying to gaslight retards into thinking that reviewing and directing work from 5-10 volunteers is a 35 hour a week job. Realistically, you should be bundling and delivery dating this - tell the volunteers work will be reviewed and feedback/next steps provided on fridays, and just spend a friday afternoon doing so. Its not hard. This sort of resource management is something I deal with in gamejams all the time, you just gotta provide high level direction and trust the people, and go cook on your own things. Its volunteer work, so for the most part you'll get what you get.

It's very comedic that this of all things is what he thinks people are going to admonish him for.
But even when entertaining this perspective, he could at minimum pull out some light and paper so as to plan out whatever concepts he has next and what ways he could go about implementing them. Who knows, maybe he could've been on the 5th rival by now if he applied that kind of planning from the start. Not much farther than that most likely, knowing it's him, but still.

Will Yandere Simulator ever have a “1960s Mode” ? (archive)
There are a handful of questions that I get asked really frequently. One of them is, “Will there ever be a 1960s Mode, featuring Dozuki as the protagonist?”

I’m thankful to have fans who are so invested in Yandere Sim that they take the time to learn about the secondary and tertiary characters such as Dozuki Aishi – the mother of Ryoba Aishi – who obtained her Senpai in 1968. However, it does get tiresome to type out the same answer multiple times every day: “No. Dozuki didn’t eliminate her rivals – she simply kidnapped and mind-broke her Senpai – so there won’t ever be any gameplay mode where she is the protagonist. It would be short and boring.”

One solution is to simply write out the answer on the About page of the official website, and just tell people to go check that page whenever they ask me. However, I’ve come up with another solution that might be more engaging and entertaining. First, a bit of backstory…

I’d like for the Characters page of the official website to have profiles for some of Ayano’s most noteworthy ancestors. I came up with an especially elaborate backstory for her great-grandmother, so I requested artwork of her, and then added her profile to the Characters page. (Please go check it out! The illustrations that have been created for her are absolutely gorgeous!) I decided that this was a great time to do two things that I’ve been meaning to do for a while: Answer the “1960s Mode” question…and try out “short-form content” for the first time.

So, I created this – a YouTube short about Dozuki and Kataba!
Man, I really miss making videos! But, I can’t justify taking time away from development to produce long, ambitious content. This type of video – less than three minutes long, not requiring a huge investment of time to produce – might be a fair compromise. It’s too early to confirm whether or not I will make similar videos in the near future, but I hope you enjoy it, anyway!

I've been trying to lay down my thoughts regarding this new announcement for quite few minutes, but I'm still in absolute disbelief, and I'm having random laughing fits whenever I attempt to properly visualize Kataba's backstory.
This is so mind bogglingly retarded, even for Alex's writing, that I just can't...

Oh, well. If yansim took 11 years to get to this stage, I wonder how long it's going to take for the Kataba stealth assassination game to have its second level released. This shitty video and article HAS to be his way of testing the waters, right? Trying to produce some hype for this potential spinoff of his stupid little game, still unfinished after a decade.

I swear, this guy is hopeless. 11 years of development, tonnes of allegations, ridicule, a history of his retarded behaviour on the Internet documented, he's been cancelled for what - 2 or 3 times already and one time is massive, and he still goes on and on.

Only uses volunteers as free labour, comes up with excuses for further procrastination, tries to gaslight a small piece of fabdom he has left and etc - the usual Alex shenanigans.
It's especially funny for him to bring out a stupid graph he made I dunno - 6 years ago? - explaining what game developers job is, while we have multiple single game developers with FINISHED games now.
Just shut the hell up, Alex.

Oh, God, this is so blatant and pathetic. "Among questions I am often asked" - yeah, I am sure nobody asks you when this shit is getting a full release, since nobody believes in it anymore. I can believe that fans of YS care about that fucking robot's mother, but grandma? What is next, her grand grand grand mother trying to save her senpai from da first black samurai Yosuke?
"Man, I really miss making videos, so please, ask me to make another one, so I would waste your time with it and then with that useless shit it is about". What a shitshow.

The game feels rushed despite the fact it has been in development for over a decade.

Also I slandered Yandere Dev. I said he was an "Arab anime fan" he is actually an Iranian anime fan but whatever

Ya know, things like this would be great if the main story was already completely done, but it's like he's grabbing idea's from his future self and putting it in.

I'm sure this was mentioned at least once in this thread's nearly 2500 pages, but Mahan himself warned everyone about this when he said he sees himself more as a writer than a programmer / he prefers writing to coding. I'm not sure if this is the exact comment I remember reading but it's similar:

A few ass-kissers in the replies as a bonus. (backup)

And while we're on the topic of game developers who prefer doing other things than programming,

we have multiple single game developers with FINISHED games now.

I cannot for the life of me find the source right now, but ZUN (from everyone's favorite Touhou Project) mentioned in an interview or somewhere that when he was younger, his preferred thing to do was making music. I think he said that the reason he started making games in the first place was as a way of displaying his music.

The difference between ZUN and Mahan: ZUN is actually good at composing, unlike Mahan with writing. I've played a handful of the earlier Touhou installments and the soundtracks were easily the best part of them. Another thing ... when it comes to the mainline games, ZUN does everything himself. Touhou games may not be known for their plots and they're certainly not known for having good art, but nonetheless he has put out a game almost every year--not even including all the collaboration games--and he has also concurrently put out print works that add to the lore and worldbuilding of the series (which is what Mahan imagines he is doing when he spergs on Reddit/YT).

Is a game like Touhou easier to make than what YanSim is supposed to be? Probably. But you also don't see ZUN hopping online every two seconds to complain about how thankless his fans are.

For comparison--YanSim began development in 2014. Since then there have been eleven Touhou games, as well as four manga and an artbook. :story: Cum chalice man cannot keep up.

Lmao no actually, its really not. In the modern era, a bullet hell is a bit more resilient to bad code, just by virtue of having less systemically interlocking sections, but it requires a huge amount of game design work and iteration to make something actually fun.

But beyond that, Zun was making his shit back in the days where you had to cook up more or less everything from scratch, no game engine to do the heavy lifting for you. You can't get away with being a mouthbreathing retard while doing that. And as far as I'm aware, he's still using his homemade engine today, with whatever improvements its needed along the way.

Is Alex worst then Chris Roberts and cloud Imperium games ?
Yes. Star Citizen is overscoped, overly delayed, and has somehow amassed a comical amount of money, but they are actually making progress towards their stated goals even after all this time, and have recently cracked some genuinely impressive tech with server meshing, and seemingly are making good strides on stabilizing the inevitable shitshow a new tech as foundational as that brings.

Star Citizen is ultimately a game of excessive ambition being chased after by good, but not amazing, developers, at the expense of all common sense and reason. Yandere Simulator is just laziness and apathy manifest, dragging along an ignorant, underdeveloped programmer with no game design sense at all.
