NGL, there was some strong shipteasing coming from Trigger concerning these two, particularly towards the end of the series. I can understand why people would want to see them in a relationship.

This is not an egregious example by any stretch.

What Meowthkip said. Ryuko might be a lesbian, but it was never stated because it wasn't important, so it's just speculation. Mako's probably bi at the very least given her nature. Now the fans screeching about them being undoubtedly lesbians and that Gamagoori setting his sights on Mako is creepy and gross and heteronormative or bi-erasure or blah blah blah would straddle this thread and the shipping thread, but far as I can tell, the fandom is rather chill about interpreting their relationship.

Yeah, it's only really threadworthy if the person who ships this is like, making declarative statements that anybody that doesn't ship it is scum and if you don't ship it you HATE THE GAYS, but that's always been the refuge of rabid shippers trying to defend their pet ship.
 
These people don;t get their ship is not special just because its lesbian. You can prefer a straight ship over a lesbian one and not be a homophobe.

The tumblr Avatar fandom is so annoying over this because they treat Makorra fans as lesbophobes just because they preferred a Makorra ending over Koreasami for whatever reason.

You know what would be really revolutionary? A show or book or some shit that has two gay people of the same gender be just friends. Just like how straight people of opposite genders can also be just friends.

There’s a big trend in Kweer Tumblr & Twitter of “reclaiming” or “stealing” things from “problematic” associations and rebranding them as “queer culture.” Cottagecore is one example; it repackages homesteading for the city-slicker libfag who’s never got a callous in their life. Because it’s okay for them to subscribe to tradwifery. It’s subversive and radical for a queer to do that. But if a dirty straight does it? It’s all the forbidden -isms and -phobias.
