To be fair you could probably say that about pretty much every video of theirs.
Sure, it seems obvious NOW but there wasn't a time when that wasn't the case. Reading around about criticism shows that there are those who share that view. I don't know why I stopped watching specifically. I think that "us gamers" rhetoric was starting to rub on me as being incredibly patronizing, and their video on game-ifying school grades was probably one of the major reasons I dropped them. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about and don't want to give them the views, the gist was this--encouraging a collective "point" system that total points would give into, then giving bonus "points" at certain goals, meaning you could in theory pass due to your classmates' hard work, or something along those lines). I still can't believe that I had a mildly positive view of them (even after no longer watching videos) until they came out hard against Gamergate with the whole "women harassment" story. I probably should have seen every red flag before but it still broke my heart. (:_(

The (bad) fighting game video you referenced in your previous post was from season 8, episode 19.
The video where they claim "we'll have run out of internet by 2014" was from season 4, episode 18.

Point is, they were always shit. They were either completely wrong (running out of internet, the fighting game video, the JRPG video, the video on Rougelikes, etc) or knowingly bullshitting to make their arguments seem legit (claiming Portal was an FPS, defending paid mods, defending microtransactions, Kanji from Persona 4 is gay, etc) and then everything else was just basic knowledge delivered in the most pretentious way possible to make the viewer (and Portnow) feel smart.

Wait...what?

How the fuck were these guys even regarded as knowledgeable? That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
The videos were well-produced, published on a (once) respectable website, and delievered in a confident tone. For a lot of people, that's all that's needed to convince people you know your shit. It always falls apart in the end, but at the start you can get a lot of people on your side. I mean, shit, I used to enjoy MovieBob's stuff when I was an Escapist member. The more you watch, the more you notice the bias, the cracks in logic, until finally you realise.

I think an Escapist thread would be a good idea because I would love to know what happened to that place. I remember it being awesome, then I went away for a little while until GamerGate rolled around and the Escapist had turned into an insane asylum and everyone was hurling shit around. Except Yahtzee who just seemed to walk through it all without getting touched. Good. I like him.

The only thing you really need to make the typical pleb trust you is good presentation. It's probably similar to how con artists work.

Kathleen seems to be getting rather SJWish on certain issues and has made some pretty "fucking white male" comments in a couple of videos without a hint of it being a joke. A pity because I really liked those guys. They are big into magic and friendly with a lot of the people at woc so that could be a big draw in that direction.

Is it worth considering a switch from just an EC community watch to an Escapist one? I feel we got a lot of minor cows and communities out of that site apart from the obvious shining stars of spergdom that could make a decent thread when put together.

They were always deeply that way. One of their frequent guest performers was Maya Kramer, of “Zoe Quinn’s Fifth Guy” fame.

Anyone see their new show? After "teaching" people about history and sci-fi, a few weeks ago they made a new series called "Extra History". I'm sure it'll be honest and accurate.

To be fair, the game is set in first person and I suppose you do "shoot" portals.

Still, it's definitely not an FPS in the traditional sense.

Jesus Christ every single Extra History is thoroughly riddled with errors, not to mention that they try to craft a narrative and get some kind of story message out of each event they cover, which is scumfuck as hell

I didn't watch the fighting one, actually, I think I stopped somewhere around season 3-4, but for many others, they kept on. In addition to being pretty well produced, I think one of the reasons they got popular was, and correct me if I'm wrong, implications that they were actually involved in the industry somehow, like had connections to developers (actual developers, not indie hacks), giving them an air of authority on the issue.

Once these people claimed that Kanji was genderqueer I stopped watching entirely. Talk about projecting your own social values onto a Japanese teenager in a completely different social environment. Guy just likes to knit.

I'm very sure the narrative they try to create are pro-inclusive values, like in the Persian episode with the socialist guy, the one episode with the female Chinese pirate, the Bronze Age episode, and they Mali episode where they promoted Islam, and downplayed slavery. If they actually put more effort in research than art, then they wouldnt have an entire episode dedicated to the fuck-ups they made.

After that episode, I really began to question their entire channel.

I'm astonished what nobody had said something about these videos yet.

Here Extra Credits is overthinking the story of the Division; I guess what Yatzee did this too but he did it how a joke; here really they take it very seriously.

Extra Credits like the hipster liberal they're follow the school "Everything is Political" in this video. Personally when people complains about the politics in wathever media they should be clear and say: We don't want propaganda in our enterteiment! instead of Politics.

Vastly overstating your accomplishments is a common tactic for people with no talent or skills (see: Zoe Quinn, Brianna Woo, etc) and it works pretty well given how many people out there are just willing to take everything they see at face value as long as they agree with what the person(s) saying. He knew he was relatively safe to claim whatever he wanted since no mainstream game site would ever bother to actually verify it when he was helping them out by parroting everything they said.

I honestly don't think he ever did a single video where he went against whatever the current groupthink was (outside of maybe while the channel was still relatively unknown but I doubt it.). It worked for a while but eventually after all those years of terrible videos most fans looking for actual intelligent discussion bailed and the remains were made up mostly of people who just wanted another person who would vomit their own opinions back at them because they live their lives in echo chambers and can't handle dissenting opinions. People on the internet nowadays have a tendency to overlook the 'bad' thing(s) person or persons say and/or do and instead just focus on the 'good' (Sarah Nyberg, for example) and that's essentially what people did with EC. As long as you simply ignore the video about how the internet ran out 4 years ago (which would normally render all of Portnow's opinions completely invalid) you're free to post the one about Kanji being a 'genderkween fairykin amorphous blob :3C' on ResetEra the next time some fucking bigot dares to claim otherwise!

Unfortunately though for James he did what a lot of super woke male internet allies do and fucked it all up by being a creepy sex pervert. I'm sure he's gonna try to make a comeback (hence the damage-control tweet stating it was just everything but sexual abuse he perpetrated) but as to how successful it'll be I've no real idea.

I re-watched the Zero Punctuation video, then this one. The difference is night and day, with Yahtz pointing out how absurd the plot is, and this douche raging about "problematic" elements (I didn't sit through the whole thing, obviously) and acting like it's something profound. (Given how he disregards any "it's just a game" and talks about it represents a terrible worldview, I'd love to see what kind of mental gymnastics Portnow would use in regards to Battlefield V, which is the opposite of what he's claiming).

They are trying way too hard now. Its only a matter of time until they turn full BBC Teach and upload an Extra History video where half the roman citizens are black.
