F-Zero GX

Holy shit, a GX thread. Best arcade racer ever, not even a competition. Fastest game to ever exist.

Sadly my wii remote died so I cant navigate the menu to turn on this game. I was really craving to play this the other day. It's really fucking dumb that I cant navigate the wii menu with my gamecube controller. I will never forgive Nintendo for this.

I haven't learned how to snake yet, but just from learning how to throttle the accelerator after a boost to keep speed for way longer, as well as that turning technique where you engage a drift state then disengage it to instantly regain grip(I'm sorry I dont know the terms), I was amazed at how my trial times came down. I really gotta get another wii remote so i can make more progress towards getting fat shark and the AX tracks. I also miss chaining mini turbos in Double Dash.

Emulate it, it's way better. Dolphin added a multithreading feature and it made a night and day difference for GX. You used to have to have a supercomputer but now you basically flip a switch and you can play it on a Core2Duo.

Also, there are both custom machine parts that you can never get no matter what, and even more custom parts that were never available in the USA versions. You have to use an Action Replay and good luck hunting one down 20 years later. Dolphin has Action Replay built in or you can download 100%-ed memory cards.

I'm emulating GX at 5760x1080 at 4x internal res and it's glorious and runs at 60 FPS all day, on mostly 2015-ish hardware.

Fuckin-a. I tried dolphin when I got my laptop back in 2016 and GX was the only game I tried that ran slow, because of course it was lol. I shall try this when I get home later today and will report back. Thanks for the heads up bro

That's funny, considering they have no problem with making a "new" Star Fox game that's just a rehash of Star Fox 64, but in HD and awful motion controls.
That's exactly what F-Zero GXX² would be, don't even waste a monkey paw finger on it. I'd rather have a new Wave Race, if they can resist the urge to ruin it... 64 suffers from unfortunate performance, Blue Storm was sort of a waste.

Count me among the madmen that 100%'d it. Even got to play the AX machine at Marvelous Marvin's.

It's the only game that made me almost throw a controller. It's hilariously corny, but fuck Story Mode.

okay so I got around to installing the latest version of dolphin, and lo and behold it runs great now just like you said! weirdly enough, the wiki told me use vulkan to run GX, but when I tried that the first sand ocean track dropped mad frames just like it did back in 2016. But I tried openGL and everything is running perfectly at 3x interal rez, aside from the occasional stutter due to what I think is shader caching, and that is mainly in the menus.

I also went and got me a 100 percent file from gamefags, and the AX courses are lovely. Fat Shark is pretty hard to control, but damn is he fast with momentum throttling!

One of my favorite games on the Gamecube and always bummed that I never played the arcade machine.

I can't unlock all the content normally and one of these days should download the 100% file. I could pay a $60 for a HD master with all the content available.

Yes! Now you're doing it right. Also it fucking rocks to be able to play it portably on a laptop.

Fat Shark is obviously the best for world records, as weight matters. I think some of the custom machines can be heavier, there's wikis for this sort of thing.

I still prefer Black Bull over both Fat Shark and custom machines because of the unique "slidey" thing he does while snaking. Fat Shark is not bad but it's worth it to spend 10 seconds for all machines and a few mentioned custom ones on the wiki. Just try them for 10 seconds to see which one you like the most and have fun.

Once you do snaking try Space Flying.

VSam is also a recent and highly underrated channel which has gone into the history of competitive GX, with high production values and great voiceovers.

Happy snaking!

That VSam channel has a lot of gold on it for sure. Lot of great tech knowledge and history for the game. I'm glad someone finally did a summoning salt-esque documentary about a game I truly love.

Gonna finally attempt snaking this afternoon, wish me luck lol. Will probably try it out with black bull. I was trying out non meta racers yesterday and I really like Twin Noritta, that's one that handles well and has a great boost but I'm not sure if that ones good for snaking or not.

I wanted to include this Google doc for posterity for if anyone comes across this thread and wants to try to learn how to go super fast in this game. It covers everything in the Max Speed style of play, and for that reason is highly technical, but is nonetheless invaluable for its knowledge.

I knew people would do snaking when I was younger because I remember looking shit up on Gamefaqs and that's what they'd say but never figured out how to properly do it. I'm still amazed that I got so close to beating the game when people say it's so damn hard even though I'm perpetually terrible at most games.
I used to be able to play Trident like it was nothing. About two years ago I tried it and was barely able to finish one lap.

I think the AI may have been somewhat broken on that course since outside of the highest difficulty it was very easy to make an insane lead over them.

The AI is extremely broken on the final course, Phantom Road Slim Line Slits, where, unless you take out racers like Mighty Gazelle and Mrs. Arrow, they will more or less fly far beyond their normal speed at the final stretch.

Anyways, I gotta say that it is quite heartwarming to see that this game still has its fans even all these years later. Having played it when it came out way back in 2003, it remains probably my all time favorite racing game, and also one of my favorite video games in general. It's no surprise that the team that made it would go on to create the Yakuza series, given just how much content is packed into it.

Seriously, they didn't need to go this far for a racing game, yet they included a Story Mode, profiles and theme music for every racer, an entire Arcade Game to connect it to, the ability to create custom machines and emblems, and specific endings for all the racers as well. That is what I call dedication, and it is something that few game developers do anymore. I especially love Captain Falcon's (suspiciously Christian-esque) theme.

I was always under the impression it was a kind of rare machine. I only saw it in the wild once, and was unable to play it at the time. I went back a couple weeks later (with my memory card) and it was gone.

There was literally only one location I ever found it, and I'm still amazed it stayed there until I moved away. Proprietor told me it got regular use, so I must not have been the only fan.
