Fallout 76 General Thread - Bethesda does it again!

Bethesda didn't spend any money or effort making it good because it was made as an obligation to their investors (who obviously wanted an ongoing revenue stream like everyone else) and they needed the budget and personnel for Starfield and TES VI.

There's no four-dimensional conspiracy here, just the contemptible base greed that characterises lazy-ass Bethesda.

I just think it's funny how Bugthesda obviously wanted New Vegas to be some cheap disposable product to generate some quick cash and hype, and it turned out to be one of the most beloved games in the franchise. So they looked at Obsidian and said "You fuckers, we're gonna show you how to really make a cheap cash grab!" and they made Fallout 76.

I think it's interesting just how bad F76 is on every level. It's bad on a technical level, it's bad on a gameplay level, it's bad on an art design level, and it's bad on a story level. Sure, some of the enviroments look interesting, but at that point it's basically an online walking simulator with guns. And they were so lazy with the art they took the hermit crab that lives in a catering van and you can tell it's a catering van because it says "Lobster Grill" on the side. They took that enemy from Far Harbor and plopped him in F76 without even removing the sign, because West Virgina is known worldwide for their lobster. They were so fuckin' lazy they couldn't take ten minutes to open up the texture and remove it!

If I wanted to play a reskinned Fallout 4 survival game that takes place shortly after the Great War with hardly any friendly NPC's and the story told thru terminals, I can download Frost for free. And while Frost has some jankiness, it's a free mod created by a University student in his spare time.

I don't think Bethesda's products are "cashgrabs".

I'd be better to say that they're just bad at game design and rely on the sheer sizes of the worlds to wow people. Their gems like Morrowind seem to be the result of them just having a few good writers (that have since quit apparently). Their success was flash in the pan rather than the product of them having a functioning corporate system that encourages good work.

Also, the people actually sperging about Fo76 have launched some kind of autism Jihad on Oxhorn. They revealed him to be a lolcow but in doing so revealed themselves as bigger lolcows as they did all while seething about him actually liking Fo76. He's not worth a thread but the "exposed" videos are a fun (but painful) watch.

FO76 is 100% a cashgrab, but otherwise I agree with you.

Their other games are flawed in various ways and they sometimes make baffling decisions (FO4's dialogue "overhaul" and settlements come to mind) but they used to have enough goodwill for most players to think "They tried something and it didn't work, but I see why they tried it" between FOShelter, FO76, and ES-Blades it's getting harder to see Bethesda as anything other than rushing shit out of the door as fast as possible to try and make some money.

I think Skyrim is the worst thing that happened to Bugthesda from a creative standpoint, because with the huge success of that game they learned that streamlining and/or dumbing down their games = profit! And while Skyrim is a very fun game, it can't be described as an RPG. It's more of an action adventure theme park. The main quest is almost scientifically designed to introduce you to every guild and faction, like going to the theme park and riding on every attraction. And all of the Daedric artifacts, the game practically begs you to take, instead of hiding them in shrines all across the map and needing to figure out what offering to make like in Oblivion.

You can see this design philosophy taking root in Fallout 4, all of the RPG-ey elements like story, dialog, and character traits being cut to the bone and replaced with combat and junk hoarding. It's this point where the rot is starting to take hold, like aping the dialog tree from Mass Effect and the building from Minecraft, not understanding why those mechanics worked in their respective games. It's at this point Bugthesda stopped being innovators, and have become imitators. Also F4 just feels "sloppier" in both detail and technically than Skyrim, ironic considering Skyrim was the game that was rushed. Details like items being removed from storekeeper's shelves when you buy them or telling the Whiterun court mage that's he's burning his potion if your alchemy skill is high enough, little details like these don't exist in F4.

Now we come to Fallout 76. The bones that were left over with F4 being boiled down to a thin, flavorless broth and left with a game so buggy and uninteresting it makes Fallout 4 look like The Witcher 3. Now they're ripping off Rust, a game that was popular 5 years ago! I just wonder what trend or game they're gonna rip off with Starfield, which is a game I'm excited for, and I'll tell you why. If Bugthesda gets their shit together and they make a fun, genre-redefining game you can sink hundreds of hours playing I'll have fun, but if it turns out to be a total and utter fuckin' shitshow I'll have fun talking garbage about it!

Can't say I disagree.

Daedric artifacts used to be badass and super special shit you had to go out of your way to find, now you can't help but trip over half of the damn things in Skyrim. Half the quests for them are nigh impossible to miss for even the dumbest player.

I kinda understand some of the interlocked faction quests, the Thieves Guild makes a good case for why you need to get cozy with the College of Winterhold to progress further, but some shit is such an afterthought it's insulting.

The Companions are the worst offender. There is so little progress from wimp to head of the guild it's ridiculous, and modders discovered it had a lot of leftover code meant to flesh it out quite a bit more they managed to complete and re-add to the game.

Fallout 4 was even worse. I loved the building mechanic, but the game makes so little attempt to immerse the player into why they bother aside from a cursory intro quest and then says no more of it. The Vault-Tec DLC tries to fix this a little, but by then, you don't care.

Fallout 3 was garbage. People only liked it because they had no experience with Fallout or RPGs and because they just wanted a mindless dungeon crawler.

IIRC the one daedric artifact the main quest directs you to is basically a trick to fuck you over since it's goading you into sacrificing Azuras Star.

Can anyone tell me who that dude is at 14:38? The British dude who goes "I got so mad, I shaaaaaved everythin' off ma face!"

I don't know who he is, but that gesture he does and the completely stupid thing he said had me howling with laughter.

That's HeelvsBabyface

And on an unrelated tangent, I wonder if anyone has gotten their replacement canvas bag yet? It's been 4 to 6 months.

Usually when a game is busted, you can wait a while and get it later for a better experience. Somehow, FO76 is worse now than it was even on release. The Division 2 is a better post-apoc PvE experience if you're looking for that

they are nerfing shit to get ready for more microtransactions.

Like nerfing all the Repair skills in getting ready to sell repair kits.

That's a really dumb move. I've seen a couple of other companies rip people off so blatantly but that was because they knew their game was dead on arrival and they were trying to scrape up as much money as possible before shutting down everything and disappearing from the face of the earth. I really doubt Bethesda is going to drop support and declare bankruptcy, so what's the point? Are those few extra bucks worth the bad press they're inevitably going to get?

To be fair, anyone who's sticking by Fallout 76 deserves this kind of treatment. Fallout 76 has also already generated tons and tons of bad press, what's a little more at this point to try and get some cash from it?

So, how much longer will Bethesda hang onto this trainwreck before finally pulling the plug on it.

I think it's gonna keep trudging along, barely hanging by a thread until Starfield or Elder Scrolls VI is released.

At the earliest, I don't see Bethesda finally admitting their hubris and taking Fallout 76 out behind the wood shed to put it out of its misery until Doom Eternal's release, since last I heard, Doom Eternal was farther along in development and closer to having a release date announced than Starfield or especially Elder Scrolls VI.

Seriously, Fallout 76 is going to be remembered in gaming history as part of that same category of video games as Duke Nukem Forever, Superman 64, Custer's Revenge, Shaq Fu, Survival Arts, and Final Fantasy XIV (pre-Realm Reborn), and maybe Gone Home once the SJW movement finally stops being relevant.

There's only two reasons why Bethesda can keep fucking up this badly for this long on what is one of the biggest video game failures in history.

Even taking into account the fact that Bethesda has been run by complete and utter fuck-ups for most of the decade, there's no way their overlords at ZeniMax would be so eager to lose as much money and gain as much negative publicity as they have with Fallout 76 unless there's a damn good reason.

Either Fallout 76 is a deliberately planned failure set up to make their next major release look good by comparison and sell out faster than a whorehouse on dollar night, with Fallout 76 being the New Coke to Starfield/TES 6's Coca-Cola Classic...

...or Todd Howard has stopped taking his psych meds and switched to crystal meth instead, so ZeniMax is allowing Fallout 76 to keep existing until Todd has enough rope to hang himself with and they can finally get rid of him and any other major-league fucktards at Bethesda using the utter trainwreck of Fallout 76 as the perfect excuse.

Seriously, the release of Fallout 76 is the worst thing to happen in West Virginia since mountaintop removal

Thanks to the never-ending disaster of this game, Todd Howard has probably fucked more West Virginians than the opioid epidemic.
