I doubt they will be scripted to die, but being the protagonist's dog is full of hazards. Force fields, Ian's SMG fire, the Enclave, and what have you. It's not easy being Dogmeat but at least you can build him a dog house.
After recruiting Dogmeat, I basically just had him stay back in my house. I know it's a waste of a companion, but he's too cute to let anything bad happen to.

And within Broken Steel, you get more Dogmeats from a perk that lets you use his offspring. Really, no one wants Dogmeat to die. That has been there since the first Fallout (and the final stretches of the game will no doubt leave him either fried or swiss cheese). At least 3 does give you the choice to let him stay at home, safe and sound.
It's going to weird to say this, but I'm kind of looking forward for Fallout 4 despite having only played a little bit of Fallout 3. From the footage I saw of it, it looks rather solid and I really hope it doesn't have a noticeable amount of bugs ruining it. Also, I'm rather happy that they're not going to kill off the German Shepard.
The second mod I downloaded for Fallout 3 was a mod that kept dogmeat from dying (I had assumed the console code to make him essential worked as well as the exact same code in Skyrim when applied to Meeko, i.e., it didn't work at all). The first was a complete overhaul that fixed a lot of the quests and broken items.
He may as well be the most least bigoted person at Tenpenny Tower. Only reason Roy could kill him aside from racism was Dashwood not agreeing to what Roy wanted.
I just modded my game so that Roy was evil. So in the end I killed Roy and his posse, Tenpenny and his guard-force and everything was great. The mod also made Moriarty evil which was also a plus.
For a game like FO3 to be so black and white on the good vs. evil thing, Bethesda sure had a hard time assigning some of the legitimate evil people as evil.
Im really happy that Fallout 4 is finally officially a thing! From what I saw it pretty much looks like to Fallout what Skyrim was to TES, the game in the series where they do a massive overhall and make all the graphics and gameplay look fucking awesome compared to the old ones. I just hope they don't water down the mechanics like they did with skyrim.
Honestly, I know its kinda dumb, but I really hope They find some way to bring back Liberty Prime. He barely got any screen time in 3, and I was a bit dissapointed that he wasnt even mentioned in NV. Like I said it's a silly thing to ask, but cmon he's a giant fucking robot patriot who's sole purpose in life is to slay commies in the name of the good ol' US. How can you not love him?
Started a new game of FO3 the other night. Decided to specialize in things I hadn't before (I'm usually a stealthy sniper/ninja) and have a more go-in-with-guns-blazing style of play. I went and did Operation: Anchorage right away and got the winterized T-51b power armor, so I'm pretty much unstoppable.
I decided my goal for this game was to collect all the bobbleheads and all the vault jumpsuits.
Gotta do something while I'm waiting for the coming masterpiece.

The Tenpenny Tower quest could have been awesome if they hadn't have made Roy "good". Roy says that no one is innocent in the wasteland. That in and of itself could have been a powerful message if they hadn't have given you the karma hit for shooting Roy in the face...

Yeah, in fact what Roy says is more fitting for an evil or neutral character. I know one could say that he is a good guy who makes tough decisions but seriously, I don't think a good guy would have Burke as a right hand man. Really, Roy Phillips would no doubt be character that I'm sure most would shoot in the face at some point. IIRC, doesn't he threaten the player at some point after having the Tenpenny residents killed despite coming to a compromise? That sort of thing doesn't bode well for those that think they could threaten a guy in T-51b wielding a deadly gun with lots of ammo.
Also, considering how Bethesda made things a bit too black and white, the only way that could be justified is if your character, being a 19 year old vault dweller fresh into the Wasteland, learns of how things on the surface isn't as black and white as they thought. Of course, Bethesda did mess up with that such as giving Roy good karma. Perhaps with Fallout 4, they will try to at least make things a bit less black and white though that may just be optimistic of me.
There's nothing like barging into the Fort in power armor while blaring "Run To The Hills" on repeat, and machine gunning everything in sight.
Well, except for barging into Caesar's tent, gunning down his minions hopped up on jet, Mex-X, and Brahman Steaks, wasting his high level minions with a hunting revolver, and then beating Caesar to death with your bear hands while he frantically unloads a machine gun into your side. (+1000xp for irony)
And then cutting off everyone's heads and sitting on your very own Skull Throne.

Honestly nothing's more satisfying than killing everyone in the Fort after you've had your weapons confiscated. The moment I get a Ballistic Fist it's game over for every Legionary that gets in my way.
On another note,
Dead Money - I actually enjoyed it thoroughly! I understand complaints with the limiting and the difficulty, but neither bothered me much. The characters definitely won me over, and I ended up enjoying the wistful tomb that is the Sierra Madre.
Old World Blues - I hated everything about the home you got with the personalities, but other than that enjoyed a lot of this DLC. Doctor Venture honestly had me sold the moment I heard him.
Honest Hearts - Literally didn't care about anything in this DLC except Joshua Graham and the .45 weapons. I love Joshua's design, bandaged-up guys in fiction always look cool to me.
Lonesome Road - A fantastic DLC, where I walked the Divide and felt like a gigantic badass doing it. The boss fight against Ulysses was difficult, and I felt feels for ED-E as he sacrificed himself. Fly far and fly fast, you beautiful spherical soul.
