Fallout series

For any kiwis wanting to torture themselves with Fallout 4 but not wanting to deal with some of the bullshit the game tosses at you, here are some mods to fix some of the poor design of the vanilla game.

Silent Protagonist - Actually be able to have a role and not have to deal with Bethesda's atrocious voice "acting" for the player character. Use this version as it doesn't require any patches to work with anything else.

Extended Dialogue Interface - Forces the game to recognize more than four responses and gives back a system similar to what FO3/FNV had. It's already required for the Point Lookout mod and will be required for all the upcoming total conversion mods like The Capital Wasteland, F4NV, Fallout Miami, etc. Pair it up with Silent Protagonist and set the dialogue camera in the options to always remain in first person if you want the old dialogue experience back.

LevelUpMenuEx - Brings back a Fallout 3 style system of handling skills and perks. Needed for the next mod below. Perfect mod for adding new perks.

Be Exceptional - Completely overhauls how perks work to make them work more like they did in FO3 and FNV. Brings back tag skills and skill points. Adds new perks and tweaks or reworks existing perks.

Start Me Up Redux - Best alternative start mod. No more having to be a parent looking for Shaun. After character creation, you get the option to "wake up from a dream" and set your stats, your profession, and reintroduces traits. Once done, you can choose how much gear you'll spawn with, what your level is, and where you will spawn.

Who's The General - Remind Preston Garvey that Chain of Command exists and you don't need to answer to him.

Bullet Count Reloaded - Fixes the annoying bug the Lever Action Rifle from Far Harbor that has you reload your entire gun after firing a single shot.

Classic Holstered Weapons - Makes holstered weapons visible again.

Right Handed Replacers - These are actually 3 mods that makes the Hunting Rifle, Lever-Action Rifle from Far Harbor, and Handmade Rifle (AK) from Nuka World right handed instead of the atrocious left-handed bolts in the vanilla game. Remember to patch the lever action to get it to work with the bullet count mod.

Scourge - Allows you to make enemies tougher or easier and removes health level scaling so far less bullet sponges at high levels.

You'll need F4SE, The Mod Configuration Menu, and the Unofficial Patch to get these working.

I started the Nuka World DLC last month then got bored after a few missions. I wanted to finish it just for the achivements but I can't, it's trash and not fun at all. Instead I restarted the main story with a new character. Playing Nuka World after Far Harbor feels like a huge downgrade.

I'd like to add a few. I second the Extended Dialogue Interface but I use something different that I'll link below.
These are more for aesthetics but I find they help with the experience. Most of these shouldn't need a requirement to work other than some that may need DLCs.

Full Dialogue Interface - I had an issue with trying to get F4SE to work once because I'm a tard and too lazy to mess with it, if you're the same then this is essentially the same as Extended Dialogue Interface but with less features. You can choose from different designs for the dialogue box.

Cadillac Jack's Radio Shack - Great new radio station with voiced DJ and lore friendly "ads" (Nuka-Cola, Sunset Sarsaparilla, Abraxo Cleaner and more.) Also a new radio to build in settlements.
"Cadillac Jack's Radio Shack is a station hosted by "Isaiah Pendergrass" a cool laid back cat who loves great pre-war songs about radiation, atom bombs, nukes and... rum. Brother to "Moses Pendergrass" who hosts Galaxy News Radio (Boston Mass.) Listen as he talks about the ongoing U.F.O. problem, reads fan e-mails, hangs out with "Dusty Dude" of Tumbleweed Tunes, plays and comments on pre-war commercials and plays the best big band and swing pre-war tunes! Go nuclear with Isaiah Pendergrass on Cadillac Jack's Radio Shack!"
Proto Vault Suit - imo offers a much more aesthetically pleasing vault suit design with many options to choose from.
"This mod will replace any default wearable vault suit in Fallout 4. Alternate colors available in optional download."
Vivid Weathers - There are a few weather mods but this one I seem to stick with. Theres an option for a player home and quest added behind Sanctuary, but I don't bother with it.
"This is a complete LORE FRIENDLY Weather and Climate Overhaul for Fallout 4!
It will add more than 75 new Weathers with over 110 new cloudtextures to the Fallout 4 World for you to experience.
It also improves the general Image quality by adding new LUT and Imagespaces to the game as well as a Player home and base to complete the Lore!
"
Near Fog Zero - Removes pesky fog lines which for me ruins that nice foggy atmosphere. Works great with mod mentioned above as well as other weather overhauls.
"Sets near fog distance to 0, which brings it right up to the player. No more moving fog line. Also helps fill in some boring scenes in a similar way to godrays."
Vivid Fallout - All in One - Nice overhaul to trees, the ground and the roads of the world. Supposedly uses less vram than vanilla textures.
"Vivid Fallout is an overhaul of all landscape textures, but also trees, rocks, roads, bridges and some concrete stuff.

In many cases I just sharpened the games original textures somewhat, added new normal maps and a slight shadowing.
However, the result looks quite good and...

the textures are less V-Ram heavy than the original ones!"

Crows and Creatures - Let's you change the designs of basically all the wildlife (and others) from the main game and DLCs.

Automatically Lowered Weapons - As oppose to other mods that allow you to lower the weapon instantly or with a key bind; this one will do it automatically after about 3 seconds.
Fun Tip: The weapon will rise when in combat, even if you haven't seen your enemy yet.

Pip-Boy Flashlight - Changes the pipboy flashlight to an actual beam and allows you to chose from a plethora of styles as well for power armor.

Darker Nights - Choose from varying degrees of how dark the game gets at night, works amazing with the flashlight.

Companion Infinite Ammo - I found it annoying you can give settlers infinite ammo with one bullet, but companions you needed to load up. This allows companions to have infinite ammo with one bullet.
"me: give them some gear, a gun and just one bullet.
them: why just one?
me: ....she'll know what to do...."

True Grass - Adds alot more grass and foliage to the world.
"True Grass is an all-in-one lore-friendly grass, plant and flora overhaul to reshape the Fallout 4 landscape into something more wild, more diversified and more natural.

Grass, plants, ground textures and distant LODs have been redone.
New grass types, flowers, plants or even some subtle mutated plants have been added.
Landscapes now uses more color tons between green and browns with some occasional stronger color spots.
Most of the vegetation types are different depending of the location.
"

Well, the farms seems to be working somewhat for now.

I legit tried to discussing this series in other sites and holy shit, the self importance, arrogancy and overall NPC-ness of these people is out of this world.

I remember I suggested Rick Hunter as the Courier's voice because both The Postal Dude and Courier survived headshots and the courier can go "postal" you could say, being a mailman and all.

Cue a bunch of fags saying how its not funny.

Either way, besides making it clear that this site is the only place where this series can get discussed with some level of sanity...
I was streaming F2 and I was thinking...isnt it funny how you can totally break progression by simply heading south because you, the player that did finish F1, know where V13 must be ? Especially since the NCR is mentioned and you can even know of its location.

There is the "intended" progression and then there is the "whatever you want" progression and I like that. I mean, the closest thing to a "punishment" to not doing the former is the random encounters being pretty hard.

Oh and Kaga is the worst, absolute worst. He is like an early Pokemon Rival, he appears when you dont want him to appear and when you are clearly underprepared for it.

And when you do beat him, he runs away while declaring himself the winner. What a bitch.

Also the mobster sprite always looked out of place for me...I guess its the small waist and broad upper chest. I didnt know they were hiring Joe Fixit

Nuka World seems designed for either two things. Killing all the Raiders straight away, and free the slaves, or doing the raider questline trying to get the melee/stealth perks. I built a melee/raider type build to do the DLC at first. Melee is ridiculous, you can one shot a Glowing Mirelurk Queen with the right build, legendary drops, and meds going, and your near invincible, you CON score retroactively scales your HP infinitely.

Which is why it's odd to me to side with the BoS in Fallout 4. Sure you get all the power armor and guns. But since Legendary enemies in FO4 don't drop Legendary power armor pieces. Once the game is over, It feels like theres nothing to do. While if you go Melee, you can virtually kill legendary mobs forever trying to get a +3 STR +3 CON melee armband.

I decided to go Melee for FO76. It's gimped in FO76 due to flying enemies you can never hit. I was the only one I knew who wasn't in Power Armor, smacking high level enemies in slacks and a golf club.

One thing that amuses me about online discussion about Fallout elsewhere on the web is the idealization of the Minutemen as a sort of East Coast answer to the NCR which couldn't be further from the truth.

For one, the Minutemen is a Militia, not a settlement or a governing force. The NCR grew out of Shady Sands as a unified settlement with a standardized military and government. The Minutemen hierarchy is so decentralized that it consists of Sole Survivor as General and self proclaimed Colonels of autonomous Minutemen divisions that half the time won't even respect your rank.

Another misnomer is that Minutemen rule would be in anyway democratic. The Minutemen would rule as a military dictatorship over the settlements with the General having unlimited power. Canonically, the General can unilaterally assign people's jobs, what settlement they live in, what crops they grow, and more without any input from the settlers themselves. It wouldn't be an East Coast NCR, it would be Caeser's Legion.

One thing that I noticed elsewhere about Fallout discussion is how much people seethe and rage over Caesar's Legion. People are so furious about the faction and mention they couldn't stomach ever siding with them in a playthrough. From they way they talk, it's pretty clear they can't differentiate reality and fiction.

Okay so check this out, hold on.

For context, this was a pinned message on the Fallout Network discord. Check this out.

"Just to help any future debate, Umberto Eco found 14 common points of fascists:

1) Cult of Tradition - yup. You got Eden, or the legion wearing wolves and shit.

2) Rejection of modernism - again, both tick the box. Legion barely even uses guns...

3) Cult of action: Harder to pinpoint, but yes, both hit that. It's basically do without thinking. Follow orders etc.

4) Disagreement is treason: Yup.

5) Fear of difference: Yup.

6) Appeal to social frustration: Yup. Either Muties or raiders.

7) Obsession with plots: Legion kind of doesn't have this, but it does have an overall distaste for the old ways and the NCR, which follows it broadly.

8) Enemy is both strong and weak: They kind of fail this one purely because we don't see all they say, but I'd say it would apply.

9) Pacifism is weakness: Yup.

10) Contempt for weak: Yuuuuup

11) Hero worship: Definitely in Legion, somewhat in Enclave.

12) Machismo: Yup.

13) Selective populism: Hard to tick for either as we don't see much.

14) Newspeak/language control: Hard to say really, but the legion fetish for rome extends to language

Each one of those is a canary in a coal mine - it warns you you might be heading to fascism

to hit 12 of 14 and be probably in the other 2? You're fascist. "

These people are insane. They dont know what fascism is even if it hit them in the face.

In fact, most people on that discord are the definition of "casual gamers were the death of the hobby"

All I got from all of that is fascism being beyond based.

Replaying F2 and the stuff with Darion and the "new khans" feel a bit bizarre.

Because it implies that Darion was there when the V.D and crew murdered the Khans to rescue Tandi and he simply hid to save himself. And the guilt haunted him for decades until he tries to get revenge 80 years later.

I think the problem is that, despite all this importantance to him, Darion is a really under cooked character. He is mentioned being "up there" in years but its not specified how much. I think Tandi is the only human from F1 that returns and she looks like it has actually been 80 years, she is 96 years in F2.

I assume that Darion was older, maybe on his early 20's...problem is this would make him at least 100 years old. While its not impossible, Darion wouldnt be in shape to lead the Khans at 100 years of age, even if he took care of himself and had a doctor always "on demand".

Darion just raises a lot of questions that just arent answered because Darion barely has any character or major interaction. It almost feels like there was cut content relating to him but we havent found any yet.

Clearly he was kept young by a mixture of chems and Mystical Khan Rage.

Honestly, I think from what you've said and what a quick read on the Wiki page gave me he was just a kid when the Vault Dweller wiped out the Khans, given that he lives in existential dread of Tandi finishing the job. That's the sort of paranoia you get from childhood trauma like your father being gunned down in front of you, not anything that happens as an adult. So, I think its safe to assume he's what, late 80s given he's described as an older man with thin gray hair?

That type of inconsistency happened with Little Lamplight in FO3 too.
And you know what? Darion's character should be the grandson of a unnamed Khan from FO1. His father was growed up with hate from his father which saw the entire destruction of the Khans from FO1.
Remember something lads, FO2 was originally concepted as a direct sequel, with the Vault Dweller doing shit after the first game.
I think Black Isle just fucked up that part in less than a year of dev.

Yeah, it would make more sense if Darion was a grandchild of Gar, it would help make him seem "closer" to the chosen one in a way since they both are trying to live up to the legacy of their grandfathers.

Either way, the true issue is the lack of more to Darion than just a "survivor of the Khan massacre of F1", he needed more character and interactions to at least sell him better to us as a legit threat. Even Gar had more to say than him.

Like I said, it was just a vague description. Darion sounds like an interesting character on paper, giving the perspective that the Vault Dweller is a cold blooded killer and that the khans were good bois who did do nuffin (ironically we would get some of that in New Vegas with the great khans).

Either way, he and the new khans feel like an afterthought considering his legacy and his plans to infiltrate and sabotage the NCR. There was a far more engaging, complex and interesting plot in there.

Yeah, and then you talk to Bitter-Root and quickly realize Hitler Boone Did Nothing Wrong. Don't forget that when the Followers of the Apocalypse did their best to bring medicine to the Khans, the Khans decided to use that knowledge to start dealing chems.

My man has PTSD over a bunch of drug-addicted old people and kids. Truly a tragedy.

One thing that amuses me about online discussion about Fallout elsewhere on the web is the idealization of the Minutemen as a sort of East Coast answer to the NCR which couldn't be further from the truth.
Fallout 4 doesn't expound upon what the factions will do once the main quest is over so everybody just uses their braindead headcanon to come up with whatever. The Minutemen are the only faction without an outright 'bad' side and is made up of citizen soldiers so people mostly just assume they'll probably fold into a democracy at some point. Not like it matters, the plot and factions of 4 are retarded and nonsensical anyway.

The Khans are niggers and deserved everything they got.
