Fallout series

I did some research for the first time on Fallout Van Buren and it turns out that the developers originally had plans to have the NCR wiped out. I wonder how that would have changed the course of the series.
One of the original endings of Van Buren was that the Battle of the Hoover Dam would be a sneak attack event not foreshadowed to the player. That the NCR would make a surprise war effort right into New Vegas and take the Legion unaware and off guard. They would wait until the Legion festival of Saturnalia and then rapidly ransack and attack as much Legion territory as possible. This was changed so that the Legion would only be a small faction in Van Buren and then they would be the main faction in the sequel.

You could also sabotage the Hoover Dam to prevent anyone from getting it. With planted explosives or using the satellite laser (that made its way into New Vegas). Most of the endings from what I remember had the Hoover Dam get entirely destroyed beyond repair.

The original idea with the Legion was that they and some of the other Tribals like the Twisted Hairs were bringing back slavery in huge numbers. And that there would be whispers and foreshadowing to the player about the rise of slavery in regions adjacent to the Mojave. And there would be a significant amount of refugee NPCs that would discuss their escape from slavery of the new raider groups. And then in the next game you'd see the end result of unchecked Legion power as slavery would become the primary source of labor in the Mojave Wasteland. And you'd finally meet people like Joshua and Caesar.

Van Buren certainly went through a lot of rewrites. But you can see the massive influence it had on New Vegas.

>mfw this plays when exploring destroyed vaults, feeling the loneliness of the place for the first time.

They were still present in the design docs, having scouts and chain gangs (who would become the original Powder Gangers) as far as Denver, but their presence on the map was limited iirc outside of there and Hoover Dam, which was a full blown settlement. The main villains were also ex NCR, the antagonist Presper being a former scientific advisor to Tandi and his goons being from the military

Tim Cain, one of the creators of the Fallout series, made an extremely controversial yet based video about shopping carts. Not only does Cain discuss the implications of either returning or not returning your shopping cart, but he's also able to connect it back to the game design philosophy. Once again, his arguments have more depth than those of Emil PagLIARulo. The last time PagLIARulo made a public speech, it was incoherent and proved he only has the position of lead game designer at Bethesda through nepotism.

Give this guy some love because he is basically preaching facts, especially at the TV series part.

Amazon and Bethesda completely destroyed the concept of ghouls now. Its over.

They went from living zombies to basically X-Men with the need of the vial of plot to nerf them. Christ almighty, what have they done to this franchise...

That's legitimately what it is. If you ever watch RoboDoc, the documentary about RoboCop, they explain that while they took inspiration from a Japanese artist who illustrated robots very similarly to what was in Atomic Heart, they insisted a robot could not look too human by virtue of being a robot.

I mean, Terminator had human like robots, or at least having organic human skin. And its not a coincidence most of them are played by attractive actors (even tho the terminator is suppose to look like an average joe, but I guess arnie just fit too well into the role)

I'm pretty sure the devs that worked on F:NV are long gone. And even if they weren't F:NV is the Burned Man to Howard's Caesar.

Most of them either have retired by this point, moved on to other companies or started their own gigs.
People need to stop thinking that brands make games, no, its teams that make them and those teams naturally change over time, its sadly how it works.

Some jackasses will take that fact and use it as an argument that "See? the NCR was always meant to be wiped out"

How freaking desperate to imply this was the whole plan all along and Amazon "really did their research"

Chris Avellone released his two part review of the Fallout tv show. Some pretty interesting stuff in there totally worth a read.

Part 1: https://chrisavellone.medium.com/fallout-apocrypha-tv-series-review-part-1-c4714083a637
Part 2: https://chrisavellone.medium.com/fallout-apocrypha-tv-series-review-part-2-1744b68fe4f2
Avellone nailed a lot of the issues both fans and detractors have about the show such as some of the lore being vague (ghouls, chalkboard) and the impactfulness of the narrative.

He does say the show is entertaining but not something he would plan on rewatching voluntarily.

He does bring up the fact that the show does not line up with Fallout 1 and 2 but does with Bethesda’s games and that’s unfortunately how it is going to be since Bethesda owns the franchise. Bitter pill, but I agree that it’s the truth.

Avellone is better at detailing the issues with the show than a lot of other commentators screaming “they’ve ruined the serious legacy of the games” or “they added black people to California, Fallout is now woke”.

According to Avellone:
3. In many ways (start lighting torches, pitchforks come later), this whole series reminded me of the final season of Star Trek’s Picard.
That's not a fucking compliment holy shit. Picard is not good. If you haven't watched the rot called Picard or seen RedLetterMedia's multiple reviews of it, you need to. I'm shocked nobody hasn't pointed this out yet. Dear god, Season 2 is worrisome.
Edit: Also to note lol:
Todd/Emil, please change the record, we get it. You miss your families. But does it have to be everybody’s problem?⁴

People told me that the Final Season of Picard was *better* than the other seasons, but I don't know what that could mean since I've heard the other two seasons were the complete shits.

Also, I still want to know which of those two got rejected by a blonde chick named Sarah in high school. I'm guessing Emil but you never know...

Lol the fallout 1n2 mod added mega power fist. i fucking one punch supermutants now.

Finally got power armor for that sweet +3 strength (now im maxed out)

You know, I will try to be constructive with the Fallout TV series.

We needed a Paladin Danse type mentor for the BOS lead. A man clad in literal shining armor who has a strict sense of honor and loyalty to the brotherhood but also with his own fair share of independent wisdom. A man who isnt afraid to demonstrate loyalty to the brotherhood but still ocassionally admit that they arent perfect

"The brotherhood...they have problems, many problems. But the reason I stand by them is because I know that their goal is a noble one. It may seem harsh to deny access to powerful technology to others but we do it to prevent further harm to innocents and the world. In time, when humanity proves that it is ready, that technology will be shared wisely and, in a way, the brotherhood wont be necessary anymore...But until then, we shall be the sword and shield of humanity, even against itself if necessary."

You could have made something special with an engaging mentor/student dynamic and having a legit strong figure thats the closest thing to a good guy in the group. Kind of the reverse of the ghoul and having their ideologies clash would be engaging.

"These are not monsters, these are people. You dont pull out a gun until they do first."

That line has a funny payoff when they are attacked, he tells the two to get behind him and the ghoul, in his own cover, asks if they are monsters now.

"No. They're hostiles now."

And he pulls out his laser rifle and starts going laying down hell on the attackers, even on getting turned to dust after he foolishly tried to fake surrender and the Knight was able to tell.

"Dropping an empty gun just to quickly reach for that one on your bootstrap when I turn around. I have seen that trick.

He sees the attacker doing exactly what he said he would, only to get blasted into dust

"And its dishonorable every time."

You could do a lot with a character like this and it paints the BOS in a flawed but good light. It really seemed like The Ghoul was the only one that knew what he was doing so it would help balance things, with both characters representing the sides of good and bad karma.

This one was in my algorithm the other day and this is one of the good reasons to not watch the show
And of course you have thousands of idiots in the comments saying "guise its bad on purpose you don't understand! fallout was always goofy like that!" as if the show is some high art series meant to subvert the viewer.
Reminds me of later GoT apologist who were insisting that every idiotic plot point was on purpose and that it will all eventually come together only for season 8 to confirm that no, writers were just retarded.

That's the thing with these retards in the comment section. Fallout was never about being goofy and over-the-top, even though the games have gotten much worse overtime. The writing and dialogue for this is goofy and over-the-top because it wants to ape whatever bullshit Disney does with Marvel, Star Wars, live-action remakes, etc., as is the case with 99.9% of other modern day movie or TV based on IPs.

And on top of that, as a writer, you cannot write bad stories, characters and/or dialogue "on purpose," because it will make you look even more like a fool by acting like the shit you wrote is on the same level of art as Orson Welles or Alfred Hitchcock

Finished Fallout 1 two days ago again after a long time. Even with the "Fixt" patch it still crashes a ton.

Had to fight the Master because my speech skill wasn't high enough (even with the autopsy disk in inventory) and I couldn't lockpick the elevator to the bomb downstairs.
Stats are like this because I was drugged out of my mind before fighting him. Gatling laser and EMP grenades got me through it. Used the sniper rifle most of time, 95% chance on eyes works great.
Blew up the military base without ever meeting the lieutenant.

Overall I still prefer this over the bethesda slop.
Now on to Fallout 2...

The NCR would not have been wiped out, as they would have been integral to planned Fallout 4(which, just like New Vegas, would have been about NCR vs Legion conflict, with Legion only being hinted at and shown off in several instances in Van Buren much like how Bethesda hinted at Railroad vs Institute conflict in Fallout 3). What you're referring to is the terrorist attacks that happened in Van Buren timeline that didn't happen in New Vegas timeline, as well as Victor Presper(the villain) wanting to nuke the NCR as his final goal, altho that would extend to nuking most of the known world and beginning again with only his closest and most trusted members who would wake up in a new world from cryo freeze.
If we're being honest, Fallout under Interplay would have been just as shit, if not more so, than modern Fallout under Bethesda today. People forget how awful the last years under Interplay have been, and which direction they wanted to take Fallout in if Tactics/BoS were any indication. At least they had the good sense to cancel their shitty TV show, seeing how stupid Bethesda/Amazon one is.
Got beat by @TheHarbinger , oh well

The older games were like this, you just have to try it again a few times. If you think that's bad, good luck convincing the Granite Squad at the end of the second game to help you out against the big bad. Even with maxed out Speech and high Charisma you're likely to fail it a few times, Master's speech check is downright merciful if I remember correctly.

Was BoS and Tactics worked on by the same developers behind Fallout 1 and 2?
