Fallout series

  • Happy Easter!
Oh god, Caesar's Legion. I usually play about as pacifist as I can with these games, essentially unless someone's life is in danger and there's no chance of reasoning with them, or I'm being attacked unprovoked, I almost always try to sort it out with words. Caesar's Legion is the only group in any sandbox game that I will attack on sight.
I'm the same way with my un aligned guy that got to level 50 and has the skills to solve shit non violently. But my NCR guy travels with Boone so diplomacy isn't an option.

My favorite Fallout New Vegas character was a guy named Johnny. Tunnel Snake haircut, always equipped with the Kings Outfit or Jailhouse Rocker, a switchblade, brass knuckles, or a pistol for a weapon. I would then start shit with anyone who didn't respect me which happened to be almost everyone because people in Fallout games feel entitled to be dicks all the time.

Yeah, I never really liked the BoS. Their only real goal is to hoard all the pre-war tech and just sit on it, and that's just really freakin' useless.
What about the Capital Wasteland chapter but I guess they aren't really official brotherhood anymore sense they changed their mission and don't respond to the Elders anymore. Either way fuck the Outcasts

The Capital Wasteland chapter is shit simply because of how it's executed. You can argue weather NV or F3 was better but as much as I love Fallout 3 the factions are ass. They paint the loathsome cunts of the east coast BoS as preachy white knights who are the clear cut good guys of the game compared to the Enclave who are a group of genocidal assholes who want to kill anyone who's not in a vault. At least the Outcasts are in a grey area since they act more like the BoS is supposed to. Unlike New Vegas where the factions are more or less grey in nature. Sure, the NCR are in a very basic sense the good guys and the Legion bad guys but on a broader scale it's hard to see one group as perfect. The NCR is a group of people who want to bring back old world values like democracy and a cohesive government. However, they're also a group of corrupt bureaucrats who have spread the NCR thin in an attempt to control massive amounts of territory. Not to mention they're fucking shit at defending it. On the other hand the Legion are a group of crazy fanatical slavers who crucify people and use women as slave labor also the average legionaire lives to be 25. However the Legion actually defends their territory. Traders feel safe travelling in Legion territory and people who live on Legion territory live there lives normally and just have to listen to the occasional order from the Legion. Then there's Mr. House who basically just wants New Vegas to be an independent city of debauchery that makes shit tons of cash.

My point is it's harder to see the factions in NV as wholly good or evil unlike the stupid retarded East coast brotherhood who are nothing more then a group Mary Sues with a giant super robot while the Enclave are just genocidal assholes who are impossible to like. Because of all this I fucking despise the East coast brotherhood compared to all the other chapters.

I do appreciate gray factions and motives and how there is no great solution in New Vegas but considering that the Brotherhood's platform in FO 3 was just killing mutants who prey on humans it is hard to be grey unless we saw things from the Mutant's perspective. It would have been nice if there was an option to side with the enclave during the war though even I probably wouldn't.

That's more or less my point though. They didn't really give the F3 brotherhood any negative characteristics. Likewise, they didn't give the Enclave any positive traits. I don't want anyone to get the idea that I hate Fallout 3 because it's actually one of my favorites. I just simply can't stand the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel because they're basically the epitome of all that is good. While the Enclave are just fascist, genocidal, assholes who murder basically everyone.

A principal trait of the Fallout series prior to 3 was moral ambiguity.

Like the NCR in Fallout 2 is portrayed as similar, if not worse than the NCR in New Vegas. There's a particular side quest you do for Vault City that reveals the NCR hired a bunch of mercenaries to harass the town so they could be pressured into joining the NCR. All in their plan to get access to Vault City's advanced technology. And these are the guy's whose sole mission is to bring democracy to the wasteland. By any means necessary. Indeed canonically the main character of Fallout 2 joined the NCR, so the canon result to that quest is you lied to Vault City so they would join.

The Master in Fallout 1 has good intentions behind what he plans to do. Creating super mutants is his attempt at saving the human race from extinction. You can even join him if you feel convinced of his actions, or alternatively can talk him into killing himself through presenting evidence to contradict his theory.

In Fallout 3 though it's just "good guys" vs "bad guys" and it's painted with the broadest brush possible. With the Brotherhood of Steel being do no wrong knights who champion freedom and stuff. And the Enclave being evil mustache twirlers who's objective in the long run isn't even that logical or well founded.

Thankfully with New Vegas they at least gave Caesar motivations beyond just being a dick, and gave you the option to join up with him if you really wanted to. All of the factions in New Vegas were really grey actually and that was one aspect of the game I really liked.

Actually, there are some negative attributes to the Brotherhood in 3. For one, the local populace (the asskisser three-dog not included) will comment that the Brotherhood just hoards their technology and food and that they're tired of them taking everything. They are also represented as unbending and isolationist even though they accept raw recruits from the wasteland. If you guys will remember, the Brotherhood, despite wanting to purify the water, still wanted to profit from the experience and use it as a bolstering point of control over the citizenry. Not only that, they were willing to exile mostly innocent people purely because the Elder felt it was appropriate.

Everything the Brotherhood does in 3 is subtlety hidden with more meaning. This is especially apparent in the DLC that takes place after you purify the water.

I definitely agree that that moral ambiguity makes better story telling and the Enclave wasn't very well written to be interesting enough to care about and they serve as just targets. You could say that the BOS in 3 are ones that learned from the BOS in west like mutants being a huge threat and need to be stopped (I don't know about you guys but every ending I get involves Hub being destroyed by them) and that picking fights with the locals who vastly out number you and are desperate isn't tactically sound. So I mean making them more grey could involve them cracking down on security but they didn't have enough man power. The thing is the BOS is written as a smarter less world ignorant faction in FO 3 in a way that is good because it shows the BOS is capable of learning from the past but unfortunately that leaves little room for hating. I mean they are still Soldiery if that counts that supposedly murder Ghouls because they are different and will gun down innocents outside Megaton over water or say Fuck those guys in Bigtown they don't need the water if you reason with them. There are little things rather than the straight up stupidity of the West Coast BOS.
PS. My Brotherhood Knowledge is really only based on Fallout 1,3, and NV so if there is any good Brotherhood antics in two let me know

I read somewhere that Bethesda made the developers make the brotherhood into the "good guys" because you HAVE to have good guys. (Fucking faggots)
Might be gibberish but it rings true.

Love me some Fallout. Particularly 1,2,and New Vegas.

I've started with 3, but it was New Vegas that really got me into the series. 1 and 2 took a bit of getting used to, but they were awesome nontheless.

Surprisingly, the Brotherhood doesn't make much of an appearance in 2. They spend most of their time shitting their metal :briefs:over the Enclave.

I've always found it funny how amazingly inept the Brotherhood chapter in the west are. They seem to genuinely have no clue about survival; The NCR, stretched thin as it may be, is still the strongest thing the west coast has and everyone should have known it after they completely raped the Enclave at the Poseidon Oil rig. The Brotherhood, however, apparently didn't get the memo that the NCR doesn't fuck around and made a futile attempt at holding a power station the NCR clearly wanted for Vegas. I know the Brotherhood thinks they're awesome because of their power suits but news flash, the NCR has even more power armor including what they jacked from the Enclave (who actually had better power armor because the Enclave was still developing new technology while the Brotherhood are simply scavengers)
