Fallout series

The only thing I'm really worried about, like many others here, is that Bethesda are going to dumb down the gameplay like they did with Skyrim and make it more action-based. Either way, I will probably still end up playing it.
I bitched for months when they dumbed down Skyrim from Oblivion. Eventually I just accepted it because I had played Oblivion 534543 times by then and needed my ES fix, but still. Right there with you. I hope they implement Hardcore mode, at least. I know it's Bethesda and not Obsidian, but Hardcore was a very nice touch and the gameplay overall was more of a challenge than 3.

While the visuals and use of Gamebryo engine disappointed me, the voiced acted PC was a little more disappointing.
I don't know how I feel about this, honestly. I never imaged the Lone Wanderer speaking. I guess it's not the worst thing in the world, but I can't help but wonder if they borrowed this idea from Bioware games, and are trying to win over players from that fandom.

What I really think happened is that they tried to be more true to the original Fallouts. 1+2 both had a male PC as you probably know. I guess they figured voice acting would add on to the experience when in reality it just detracts.
A lot about the trailer seemed to scream "Hey guise we played the originals!"
From the art style to the design of the city we saw. I don't really care for it honestly, but it does have some charm. That tacky Vault Armor was nice.

I guess they're pandering to players old and new. It's a good marketing strategy, for sure, not to mention not everyone has a next gen console/PC so they've got to reach as many people as possible.
Slightly OT but I've only played about an hour of each of the originals. Kicking myself for not backing those guys up on my last laptop, now that they're not free. God damn it, me.

You could play a woman in the originals. It's only in the canon they're male. Lone Wanderer and Courier are male in the canon too.
I know the Vault Dweller and Chosen One were males (considering New Vegas mentioning a Mr. Bishop and the statue of the Vault Dweller in NCR) but were does it mention Courier and Lone Wanderer being males?

You're right, holy shit. I honestly never even noticed there was an option while doing my two playthroughs of Fallout 1 and single playthrough for Fallout 2.
I guess they were trying to make some sort of throwback to the canon Vault Dweller and Chosen One in that case.
On the topic of the protag of Fallout 4 (the leaked info from Reddit called him "The Officer"), I honestly wonder how having a defined character will affect moral choices in the game. Because if the leaked info and speculation turns out to be true, the main character in Fallout 4 may be a not only an already defined character, but also a character that was alive before the war. Interesting to see how character building will play out if it's true. I doubt it is true, but we'll see.

If you guys want a good laugh, keep an eye on the "No Mutants Allowed" forum. They're known to to have an irrational spergy hatred towards the new Fallout games and chimped out over Fallout 3 (for a time mods banned people that expressed that they liked Fallout 3) and to a lesser extent Fallout: New Vegas. Bethesda is their Blue Arms.

To be fair, FO3 is barely anything like the older games. New Vegas was a step in the right direction in a lot of ways but was crippled by a shit engine.

While Valve uses the the Source Engine, Bethesda uses Gamebyro - simply because they know the program inside and out because they built it themselves. Fallout within Bethesda's hand will never change because their entire branch is solely dedicated to the Gamebyro engine. They've used it since Oblivion and they're pretty good with using it.

Bethesda.
Bethesda never changes.

It's a shame, because New Vegas could've easily been tons better if they had a bit more time to flesh out the Legion and worked on an engine that doesn't completely shit on itself when too many NPC's are in the area.

The idea of a voiced protagonist doesn't really worry me so much as Bethesda's voice direction. People often say Bethesda's open world games have crap voice acting, but to me it's more the voice direction that's lacking. It's always seemed more like their voice actors are just rattling off line after line without any guidance or idea as to the context of the situation the line will appear in.
The Witcher 3 has really brought this into focus because the amount of spoken text in that game is staggering, yet almost every single line from the npc's is fantastically delivered and incredibly natural sounding.
If anything, it's the main characters in that game that have the less than stellar voice work. Geralt and Yennefer could definitely be better.

Bethesda should stop hiring the likes of Sean bean and Liam Neeson and instead invest that money into a more diverse and better directed cast.

I always felt that Bethesda was pushing Obsidian with New Vegas a bit too much. So in the end a lot of stuff was cut, some of it finished (like the post game dialog) and a lot of it not such as the planned town under Legion control that was supposed to have shown how their society was like away from the war-zone. It might also be why the Mohave wastes don't have as many landmarks and ruins to explore as the Capital Wasteland did. It still turned out s a pretty good game though.

As for Fallout 3, I liked the game and kind of give Bethesda a pass because it was their first entry into the Fallout series. I'm just hoping they learned some things and listened to the criticism. The biggest peeve I have is I wish they would at least explain why there aren't any thriving plant-life on the East Coast, "nuclear war" isn't going to cut it since the games are now 210+ years after the nuclear war. At least in the trailer they depicted some decently constructed post-nuke buildings this time rather than the cobbled messes people lived in seen in Fallout 3.

As for guessing on the Fallout 3 lore. I think the Institute will be the big-bads this time. Considering how douchey the Institute guy Dr. Zimmer in FO3 was (referring to Rivet City residents as barbarians playing with chemistry sets) it seems like they have a "Enclave superior race thing" going for them as well. I also wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed that they colluded with the Enclave at some point. The impression from the dialog I got in FO3 was that the Institute was a cross between the BoS and Enclave in that they horded pre-war technology while at the same time tinkered and improved it. My uneducated guess is the game will revolve around freeing the people under the Institute's authoritarian thumb while getting on the inside of the Institute and getting some of that sweet technology.

I disagree a bit here. Even when Obsidian isn't being rushed their games are a wealth of cut content. (IE: KotOR 2, Pillars of Eternity, etc.)

KotOR 2 actually was really rushed. LucasArts gave them like a year to do the whole thing, which is not enough time for a long RPG.

Honestly, I didn't think New Vegas felt all that rushed. I don't know, I was pretty satisfied with the game as a whole.

So people were watching the trailer and spotted this Vault Dweller character, he appears out of the scene and apparently pops out of the scene after a few shots. There's some speculations:

  • It's the Player Character's Model, when Bethesda did the scene they tfc'd with the character nearby and forgot to hide him.
  • Its the Mysterious Stranger, same dude with the robot hand in the Trenchcoat (look at the hands)
  • It's just a vault dweller welcoming the people in.
Now the first situation is interesting because that means that the PC character, second means the Mysterious Stranger is involved in the story some how and third is shit being analyzed too much.

I tried to come up with a response but all I heard was Mysterious Stranger guitar riff and lost my train of thought.
