Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

Has that ever worked in fighting games? I guess KoF has done it in their narrative but still kept old protagonists throughout. Gameplay-wise I'm not aware of any.
Jin was close to this in Tekken 3 until Kazuya returned. SamSho sort of tried to swap Haohmaru with Shizumaru with Zankuro, but it didn't work out.

The most obnoxious DLC whoring I can recall was Street Fighter X Tekken. IIRC is was something like several dozen things behind a fucking paywall for that POS. SFV was pretty sickening too.
Duty Fighter V has nothing on Tekken 8. Tekken 8's second season actually made people drop the game.

I think the artwork in KoF peaked with 13 honestly. The hand drawn art looks really nice in that one and the animations are really smooth. It reminds me a bit of SF3.
KoF 13 was some great spritework, but as far as I'm aware it was very expensive to do. Believe they 3D modeled then drew the sprites over top, but I'm not 100%.

Pretty funny that a bunch of fighters looked pretty poor for a generation. Comparing SF4->SF5, TK6->TK7, KoF13->KoF14, UMVC3->MVCI, and probably more, the genre was in a recession there.

Yea, that game did replace most of the former cast. I guess Hwoarang and Julia were successful replacements for Baek and Michelle.
For the second part, while T8 is abysmal atm, S2 wasn't DLC. Admittedly its still pretty bad with plenty modern DLC practices (like battlepass garbage). On a surface level I think they look pretty comparable, but I have only played SFV post SF6. Will be interesting at least to see how they try and climb out of the S2 pit, successful or not.

For those playing CotW, how's the balance? The one tournament I saw had a bunch of Kains, but that was one early tournament. I imagine it's pretty good like most modern fighting games.

I'd argue that season 2 of SF V drove people away although maybe not as much. Everyone thought that season 2 was going to fix a lot of issues but the devs doubled down on the things people hated and nerfed good characters for no reason other than pettiness.

It's another reason why I think learning a modern fighting game is a waste of time when you can spend dozens if not hundreds of hours figuring out combos, resets, oki, frametraps, matchups, whiff punishes and all of that. Learn all of that with every new character that drops. And then all that can get flushed right down the toilet with a balance patch.

The balance is very solid, as is the case with most modern fighting games. From what I've seen most people agree that Ronaldo, Hotaru, Hokutomaru, Kain, and Billy are the top tiers. Anybody with a shoto moveset like Terry, Rock, or Marco are also very good. Tizoc is mostly agreed to be bottom 1, but he can still get work done by spamming his forward advancing headbutt move and using usual grappler shenanigans. I've been maining Gato and he tends to struggle hard against fireball characters but absolutely rapes anyone who doesn't have a meterless DP.

I'm really enjoying this game. My mini wishlist for the time being is that they make Geese playable sooner rather than later (I don't really care about Fallen Rock, but I imagine they'd be a twofer) and that they convert more backgrounds for "dual plane" play.

Kinda funny how the most iconic characters in fighting games were expected at launch, now they're the second wind dlc 14 months in.

I guess SNK felt that they "needed" to bring back most of the cast from MoTW, since that's what everyone expects these days. That's the only reason I was expecting Geese to return at all considering he wasn't in MoTW. I really don't have much issue with the games' starting lineup, beyond Ronaldo and the DJ. We'll get most of the series' heavy hitters back at some point. Not sure how they'll fit into the story, though. I'd much prefer getting back to the days of getting a complete game from the jump, but that's never coming back, lol.

What didn't help 13 was the learning curve being really high. Combos on top of mechanics weren't easy for a lot of people. I couldn't get into 13 either.
I also think the sprites were waaaay too stylized. Nice looking yes, but there was something very alien about them. Amazing the mileage they got out of those Neogeo sprites for like 15 years reusing them over and over and it was acceptable.

MOTW sprites > 13
