I really enjoyed The Island of Doctor Moreau by HG Wells when I read it a few years ago.

Nineteen Eighty Four. Despite what pretentious book snobs will tell you, this is a science fiction novel.
Indeed. As such I also wholeheartedly recommend Aldous Huxley's Brave New World as a companion piece. Though they were written by different authors, both books complement each other excellently.
I'd also like to suggest Peter Watts' Behemoth trilogy. It's a great read but it's also pretty fucked up.

"Kallocain" is another good but less known dystopian novel of the same era, written by an author that had just visited both nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. More about self-reinforced shame-based social control than the technological kin. Not sure if the translations are any good though.
+1 on Rifters. Love me some Watts. One of few sci-fi authors with a decent grasp of both science and basic human interaction.

The Moon is A Harsh Mistress
Dune
Starship Troopers
Rant
The Night Land

I'm about 75% through Hyperion and as long as it doesn't shit the bed it will easily be among my favorites.
